Indictment: Missing pregnant teen shot to death by uncle
Charges: Uncle accused of raping teen, killing her and unborn child

A missing pregnant Jacksonville teenager was shot to death in December by her uncle, who is believed to be the father of her baby, according to Duval County Court records.

Johnathan Quiles has been in jail since January on a felony sexual battery charge related to a different victim, who is also a relative.

Quiles, 34, was indicted last week on murder charges in the death of Iyana Sawyer and her unborn child. He was also indicted on a sexual battery charge.

Man accused of killing his pregnant niece confessed to his brother, according to police reports

The man accused of killing his missing pregnant niece confessed the crime to his brother, according to a police incident report.

First Coast News obtained thousands of photographs, hours of recordings and dozens of investigative documents just released by prosecutors that may be used as evidence at the trial of Johnathan Quiles.

Quiles is accused of the sexual battery and first-degree murder of his niece, 16-year-old high school sophomore Iyana Sawyer. The teen was last seen leaving Terry Parker High School in December of 2018 and is believed to be dead, though her body was never found.

Quiles, who police suspect fathered of the girl’s unborn baby, faces murder charges in the baby's death as well. He is also charged with the sexual battery of another female relative.

Quiles has pleaded not guilty.

In a series of supplemental police reports released late Friday, police say Quiles' brother called a Jacksonville Sheriff's Office tip line to tell police his brother confessed to killing Sawyer and detailed the events leading up to her death.

Quiles' brother, whose name is redacted, said that Quiles called him on Dec. 19 or Dec. 20 of 2018 and sounded "very frantic." He said he was rambling about how "the girl might be pregnant and he can't lose his family if she has the baby and that he had to get rid of the body." He then told him "I know what to do" and said he would call him back.

The report goes on to say, approximately one hour later, Quiles called again and said: "It's done, I can finally breathe easy."

Police: Uncle held in niece’s murder gave her pills to cause miscarriage

A new batch of documents in the rape and murder case against a Jacksonville man suspected of impregnating and killing his teenage niece released Friday by the State Attorney’s Office indicates that three people claim he admitted killing her.

The latest round of documents, which include affidavits for warrants to search Quiles’ devices and social media accounts, was released as part of the discovery process in the court proceedings against Quiles.

According to the affidavits, Sawyer left school Dec. 19, 2018, and traveled to her uncle’s workplace, a salvage yard on North Main Street. The affidavits stated that Quiles called his brother, who lives in New York, and acknowledged he was hiding his niece at his place of work.

A short time later, police say Quiles called his brother again saying “the problem is handled."

Police suspect Sawyer, who had told relatives that Quiles was the father of her unborn child, was shot and killed and placed in a dumpster that was taken to the Otis Road Landfill. Investigators searched that landfill for weeks in the wake of the 16-year-old’s disappearance, but they never found her body. All they found there was a Terry Parker High library book and underwear that might have been Sawyer’s.

Also included in the latest discovery material was a letter found on Quiles’ computer that investigators believe Sawyer authored. In the letter, she told Quiles she loved him but admitted being jealous about the affection shown to her sister.

“You told me you and your brother would never do that to each other, but you’ll sleep with sisters, though,” the letter states.

In a separate report, police indicated that Sawyer told a family member that she and her sister had lost their virginity to Quiles and the pair had been vying for his attention.

In yet another report, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office learned Sawyer’s sister was pregnant in 2017 and suggested that Quiles gave her pills to cause a miscarriage. In October 2018, Quiles bought herbal drugs online and gave them to Sawyer in hopes she would miscarry, the report stated.

Smh. Sometimes there just aren't words... So sad.

Defense for man accused of killing pregnant teen niece asks for time to review evidence

The man accused of killing his pregnant teenage niece will appear before a Duval County judge again in one month.

Johnathan Quiles' defense team said it needs more time to look at 35 disks of evidence provided by the state in the investigation into Iyana Sawyer's death in December 2018. In February, 911 calls were released reporting 17-year-old Iyana's disappearance, among hundreds of new documents and photos obtained by First Coast News in the case against Quiles.

Quiles has pleaded not guilty. His next pretrial hearing is scheduled for Sept. 30 at 9 a.m.

Man charged in death of pregnant teenage niece fighting death penalty

Back in 2019, Johnathan Quiles was accused and later indicted for sexual battery and the murder of his 16-year-old niece, Iyana Sawyer.

He might accomplish that task, IF he tells LE where to find Iyana!

Family sues Jacksonville man charged in niece’s disappearance

The family of Iyana Sawyer has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against her uncle, who’s charged in her murder and disappearance, News4Jax has learned.

Sawyer’s family’s lawsuit, which was filed in December, claims that Quiles shot the teen and then placed her body in a dumpster at his place of work, a Jacksonville auto salvage lot.

Quiles’ former employer and the salvage lot’s owner were named as co-defendants in the lawsuit, which alleges that they were responsible for spoiled, missing or destroyed evidence.

The lawsuit is seeking more than $30,000.

Prosecutors have informed Quiles that they intend to seek the death penalty if he’s convicted. Lawyers for Quiles, meanwhile, have filed a flurry of motions to block the death penalty.

A hearing on those motions is scheduled for May, though no trial date has been set.

New charges filed in separate case against man accused of killing niece

New charges have been filed against Johnathan Quiles, who’s already charged in the rape and murder of his niece, Iyana Sawyer, who was pregnant.

Quiles, 37, is also charged with sexual battery on another girl, and the state attorney’s office filed three new counts of lewd and lascivious molestation in that case. Quiles pleaded not guilty at his arraignment Wednesday.

The trial in that case is set for June.

Quiles’ trial in Sawyer’s murder is scheduled for December. It’s a death penalty case.

Another new trial date set for man accused of killing pregnant niece

A new trial date on Tuesday was set for Johnathan Quiles, who is charged with the rape and murder of his pregnant niece Iyana Sawyer.

That’s the sixth trial date in the death penalty case.

Jury selection is slated to begin on April 24.

Quiles’ next court hearing is scheduled for Feb. 14, and the final pretrial hearing is planned for April 19.

The case has dragged on for years. The trial had been scheduled for last month but was delayed.

Johnathan Quiles claims he’s being mistreated in jail due to media attention to his case

Johnathan Quiles defense attorney said the 38-year-old claims he is being mistreated in the Duval County Jail, because of the media attention the case has garnered over the past four years. Quiles says people inside the jail are calling him a monster and a predator and he has concerns about how the court will be able to find a jury that’s impartial.

Quiles is charged with the rape and murder of his pregnant niece, Iyana Sawyer, in 2018. In court Tuesday, his attorneys said he’s been asking for the opportunity to speak to the court.

“The main concern has to do with the media attention he’s received and some of the backlash that he’s had to deal with, within the jail, and maltreatment he’s suffered because of that,” Quiles attorney said.

He did not end up speak to the court and lawyers weren’t specific about what kind of mistreatment he alleges he’s been experiencing. Quiles trial date has tentatively been set for September 11.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A judge is set to decide Monday whether a man accused of raping and killing his niece will have his past accusations and crimes referenced during his trial.

Johnathan Quiles is accused of killing his 16-year-old niece Iyana Sawyer and her unborn child in December 2018.

Typically during trials, past crimes and accusations aren’t mentioned, but according to Williams Rule, which is a Florida statute, past crimes can be brought up to show motive in certain situations. The judge preceding the case will ultimately decide if the statute applies at a hearing today.

Quiles’ criminal history began in 2017 when he was accused of sexually assaulting an unknown minor in December of 2017.

The unnamed girl spent the night at Quiles’ house to babysit his then 3-year-old daughter, and she said that is when he assaulted her. The girl told her mom about the incident a year after it occurred, according to Quiles’ arrest report. Police now believe this unidentified girl was Iyana Sawyer.

Around the same time the report was filed, went missing. She was last seen on Dec. 19, 2018, traveling to her uncle’s job at a salvage yard on North Main Street after leaving school. Her body was never found, but police believe she was shot dead and he body dumped at Otis Road Landfill.

Quiles has been in Duval County Jail for the past four years and is facing the death penalty. His hearing today is set for 1:30 p.m.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A Jacksonville man accused of raping his 16-year-old niece and killing her and her unborn child will be back in court Thursday.

A judge is expected to decide at some point if past accusations against Jonathan Quiles and his criminal history can be referenced in his trial for the murder of Iyana Sawyer.

Quiles was in court two weeks ago for the first part of what’s known as a Williams Rule hearing to determine if those previous accusations and crimes should be considered in the upcoming trial on unrelated charges.

Normally during trials, prosecutors aren’t allowed to bring up past crimes or convictions. This evidence can’t be used to argue a “propensity” for a certain crime because the defendant has been accused or convicted of something similar in the past.

Prosecutors are arguing to be allowed to bring up Quiles’ criminal history, because they believe testimony from a potential second minor victim could help in their murder case against him.

According to a 2019 arrest report, a girl, who is not named in the report, was spending the night at Quiles’ home to babysit his 3-year-old daughter in December 2017, and he woke her up in the middle of the night and sexually battered her.

During the hearing two weeks ago, prosecutors argued that testimony from the girl could help in the pursuit of justice for Iyana Sawyer and her unborn child.

That unknown girl told her mother about what happened one year later, according to the report -- around the same time Sawyer, the niece Quiles is accused of killing, disappeared.

The trial of a Florida man accused of raping and murdering his pregnant teenage niece began Thursday, nearly five years after the 16-year-old girl vanished.

A grand jury indicted Johnathan Quiles on charges of first-degree murder and sexual battery in July 2019, 7 months after his niece, 16-year-old Iyana Sawyer, was last seen, according to court records reviewed by PEOPLE. Sawyer’s body has never been found, but prosecutors claim she was killed by her uncle around the time she disappeared.

Sawyer, who was five months pregnant, was last seen on Dec. 19, 2018, according to several court documents. On that day, Sawyer left school around lunchtime, according to the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System. She then traveled to a salvage yard where Quiles worked, News4JAX reported, citing court records. Police believe Sawyer was pregnant with her uncle's child, according to the outlet, and was shot and killed, put in a dumpster and brought to a landfill.

I remember this one and it is just a reminder of the sick and sadistic people in this world. The evil. An UNCLE. WTH is wrong with people who prey, abuse and then dispose of even their own family members! Makes me SICK.

I hope he gets everything that should be coming to him!
