Missing SC mother called 911, screamed, then vanished, deputies say

South Carolina deputies are searching for a missing mother of two who vanished after her ex-boyfriend showed up at her house, according to the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office.

Jamilla Smith, 30, has not been heard from since Dec. 2. Aiken County deputies said Smith called 911 saying that her ex-boyfriend, Daniel Harmon, had come to her house. Dispatch heard a scream and a man’s voice demanding she get into a vehicle before the call went silent.

When deputies arrived at the scene, they found a window screen that had been damaged, Smith’s keys on the ground and a shoeprint on the front door.

Harmon was arrested on Tuesday after a SWAT standoff at his home in North Augusta. He’s been charged with kidnapping Smith.

Harmon is the mother of Smith’s youngest child and had prior arrests for domestic violence.

I think they mean Harmon is the father of Smith's youngest child unless I am confused.

This does not sound promising and he's already been charged.

Well if this is true SC, this county and SLED have more black eyes for the State of SC. I guess she wasn't a Murdaugh but more like a Stephen Smith or a housekeeper. Not so important. AFter all when you run with this kind as they say...

Sorry but kind of hard to not react considering the b.s. in that state going on to this day.

Family of missing woman Jamilla Smith wants SLED, FBI to take over case

The family of a missing Aiken County mother is calling on a higher law enforcement agency to help in the search. 30-year-old Jamilla Smith called 911 when her ex-boyfriend showed up to her home December 2nd and has not been seen or heard from since that day.

“We’re offering a $10,000 reward for anybody who knows any type of information to call in and let somebody know something,” said Jame Smith, Jamilla Smith’s father.

It’s been more than two weeks and now an increase in reward money for the location of Jamilla Smith, known as Millie to loved ones. Monday, her family and missing persons organization Broken Link Foundation sent a message to Aiken County Sheriff’s Office.

“The family is requesting that SLED take over Jamilla’s investigation, removing Aiken County Sheriff’s Office entirely from the investigation. We are also asking that the FBI step in and assist,” said Kimberly Kite, Founder and Investigative Researcher with Broken Link Foundation.

Smith, who has two young children, last spoke to her mother around 7 o’clock Saturday, December 2nd. That same night, she called 911 to report her ex-boyfriend, 34-year-old Daniel Harmon showed up at her home. She ran down the street to get away from him. While police arrested and charged Harmon a few days later in North Augusta with kidnapping and domestic violence, there have been no signs of Smith. He’s also not talking to law enforcement. And loved ones say they can’t get any answers from investigators.

“Nothing has been said. Nothing has been done. We’ve been left to do our own thing,” said family friend Vanessa Williams.

Aiken County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Captain Eric Abdullah said, “The investigators are communicating with key individuals of the family, Ms. Smith’s mother, the family, a couple of relatives. Specifics I don’t know.”

Smith’s family said the abuse can be dated back to August with email exchanges between investigators and Jamilla. NewsChannel 6 obtained a total of 100 pages of incident reports all showing Harmon’s early trouble with the law and the couple’s violent relationship, including the incident in August. We also have other more recent reports. The last deputy called in response to the couple’s domestic dispute in November revealed that deputy believed Harmon choked and scratched Smith, noting dried blood on his nails.

Kite added, “Daniel Harmon is an abuser. He has a wrap sheet more than a mile long, but always seems to weasel his way back into population. We do know beyond a shadow of doubt that Jamilla was screaming for help. The ones that she was supposed to be able to trust to help her and save her failed her.”

Loved ones want to search the areas between where Smith lived and where Harmon was arrested, along with properties they believe he owned in the CSRA.

While Smith’s children are with their grandmother, family members say she and Jamilla’s father are distraught. And they aren’t sure they will make it without their daughter as the holidays approach.

“Her mom told me, she said I don’t know if I’m going to survive this,” Kite said adding that she’s sought out counseling and received an invitation to talk from Gabby Petito’s mother.

JACKSON, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) - The Aiken County Sheriff’s Office’s investigation into Jamilla Smith has turned from a missing-persons case to a homicide case.

On Saturday, Capt. Eric Abdullah with the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office says 34-year-old Daniel Harmon, who was previously charged and arrested in this case, is now being charged with murder.

This comes almost a week after Smith’s family increased their reward for information on Jamilla’s whereabouts from $5,000 to $10,000.

Smith’s last known location was her house at 425 Old Jackson Highway on the night of Dec. 2. She called 911 and said she was running from a man she described as her ex. The phone went dead but not before a male voice is heard yelling at her to get in the car, followed by a horn blaring.

Harmon was arrested and charged on Dec. 5 with domestic violence in the second degree, and a kidnapping charge was later added to the case.

Abdullah says the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division are working on the case.

If anyone has any information on this investigation, the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office encourages people to reach out to their office at 803-648-6811.

<snip>

A newly released warrant affidavit accuses Harmon of killing Smith of killing Smith in the 400 block of Old Jackson Highway around the time they both went missing. The affidavit said that, in a 911 call placed by Smith on Dec. 2, she alleged her ex-boyfriend had broken into her home and was chasing her.

The affidavit states that Smith sounded out of breath and, when the dispatcher asked where she could meet a deputy, a car engine revved, and Smith screamed. The affidavit said a male voice could be heard telling Smith to get into the car so he could take her to the emergency room.

The male voice alleges Smith jumped in front of the car as she denies the claim and demands the man leave her alone.
The affidavit continues that her mother reported her missing on Dec. 3, and a search for a black Dodge Charger Harmon was renting began the next day. On Dec. 5, the vehicle was located in front of a home on Carpentersville Road with a cover over it. They found Harmon inside the home. A warranted search of the car the next day uncovered suspected blood in the trunk. Results of a DNA test completed by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division were sent to Aiken County investigators on Sunday. The results of the tests were redacted in the warrant affidavit.

Authorities said there has been no activity on Smith's phone since Dec. 2, and her family, including her mother, who spoke with her regularly, has not heard from her since that day. She has also not contacted her children, father or siblings.

The affidavit states that investigators believe Harmon hit her with the vehicle and didn't take her to the hospital.

I assume they mean Harmon is the father not the mother of the youngest kid. Just on this thread for first time.

And I meant this as a down on the county and state way as to LE telling the family "well when you run with these kind of people".

Right there someone/s should be out of a job, taken off the case and/or reprimanded and sanctioned.

A wrap sheet a mile long. Gets out of trouble every time.

I will say it sounds like her mom and dad need to get on the same page. IF LE is telling the truth they are in touch with the mother and I take that to mean not her father. IF TRUE. And they are likely sharing little with he either.

This department better shape up. She CRIED to them for help and did report it sounds like frequently asking for help! And the remark of who you run with to her family if true is UNACCEPTABLE.

This entire states LE at every level and cronies and Murdaugh b.s. and corruption and now more saga on that already look like the most corrupt system and state that ever was. And now this? Dumb enough to ignore a woman begging for help and to make such a remark to loved ones? SLED isn't without its black eyes either but I'd trust them before a county like this with apparently power gone to head, a give a **** about some people and a serious failure to protect its own or incarcerate the bad or do a thing about it.

JACKSON, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) - Jamilla’s family and friends say it’s hard to put into words how they are feeling right now and how they have been feeling for the last month.

“When Millie walked into the room, it was more so like, her beauty one. You know, like, she’s beautiful. Millie has always just been the little pretty beautiful little thing. But it was like her spirit. She never let anybody feel like they were less than anything,” said Ytia Echandia, Jamilla’s close friend.

Jamilla was always there for everyone she loved. Her closest friends say she was the ‘glue’ that held them together.

“I don’t have that anymore. Like, you know, like, it’s not there anymore. I have no one to call, you know, talk to. So you know, it’s hard. It really is hard,” said Echandia.

Losing so much while having so little information about what happened and why.

“Since the day I met Jamilla, we had an unbreakable bond. I truly loved Jamilla. I can’t remember a day I haven’t since I met her,” said Lee Manley, Jamilla’s close friend.

Her friends say her smile lit up a room, and there wasn’t anything she wouldn’t do for the people she loved.

“I don’t know if this is a hard situation to deal with, because it’s like, you know, used to have someone there. Pretty much as long as I can remember as far as friendship, and love and genuine connection,” said Manley.

Her love for her friends was strong, but it was even stronger for her kids. Now they are just looking for answers and for peace.

“Trying to find out, like, where she is like, like, where’s melee? Like, we that’s just something we need, we need to know where she is, like, bring her home so we can have closure, you know, in our hearts,” said Echandia.

If anyone has any information on this investigation, the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office encourages them to call 803-648-6811.

JACKSON, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) - An Aiken man charged with the kidnapping and murder of 30-year-old Jamilla Shanae’ “Millie” Smith is now facing new charges.

According to the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office, 34-year-old Daniel Harmon is now charged with one count of trafficking cocaine of 10 grams or more and one count of trafficking of fentanyl of 14 grams or more.

The charges were added on Friday, according to jail records.

The new drug charges come weeks after Harmon was arrested in the disappearance and murder of his ex-girlfriend Smith.

This is great news BUT there is an LE agency she was apparently CRYING out to for help. That needs to not be forgotten, ignored nor should serious sanctions not come if that is all true. Been in trouble many a time and he gets out, weasels out. Oh really? There are judges and more responsible for that and someone responsible for ignoring her cries for help. That all needs to NOT be ignored. Consequences should come. Is this the same agency or county that now charged him that ignored her and the same judge or judges that didn't sentence him harshly enough before or let him out?

If it is, I have trouble saying kudos to them as she might still be here if he was not free AND if they had listened to her.

Family of mother of two presumed dead, to plead for closure in press conference
Jamilla Smith is presumed dead, but her family still need closure.

The 30-year-old mother of two was last heard on a 9-1-1 calling yelling at her estranged boyfriend Daniel Harmon, after dispatchers believe he ran her over with a car.

Harmon, 34, was charged with murder in her disappearance.

Smith's family along with The Broken Link Foundation will be hold another press conference on Monday, January 29 at 11 a.m. at the Aiken County Sheriff's Office.

The family is still offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to her location or recovery.

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) – This week marks two months since Jamilla Smith went missing after a troubling 911 phone call with her abusive ex-boyfriend present. He has been arrested and charged with kidnapping, murder and drugs. And now the family wants a local attorney to take on their case for free, getting Smith back and a conviction.

“If you call 911 and you hear a distress call, you don’t do nothing about it? You just let it ride until you get a murder case?” said James Smith, Jamilla Smith’s dad about his daughter’s call for help.

Smith’s family and missing persons organization The Broken Link Foundation called into question several Aiken County Sheriff’s Office policies. They said it’s been one month since her father has heard from authorities and they say law enforcement still won’t answer critical questions about the case.

A family member, Vanessa Williams, shared, “Why is it taking so long for them to provide information such as GPS coordinates, cell phone information, forensics on a burner phone that we just received knowledge of. What we don’t know is why is it taking so long for them to find Millie.”

The family said what they do know is police have charged Daniel Harmon with Smith’s kidnapping and murder. Police said Harmon was Smith’s ex-boyfriend and that he abused her. Now, the family is moving in a new direction; getting their loved one’s body and a conviction. But they need Aiken County’s help and generosity.

“We are reaching out to the legal community and beyond, seeking a pro-bono attorney who can champion our case and our cause to help us find answers and justice,” said Jamilla Smith’s aunt, Gina Herron.

Family's plea for justice continues for missing Aiken mother feared dead
The family of a missing 30-year-old Aiken County woman, who authorities believe is dead, will hold another press conference next week.

Jamilla Smith's family along with The Broken Link Foundation will hold a press conference in front of the Aiken County Courthouse on February 23 at 11:30 a.m.

In January, Jamilla's father Jame Smith asked for the help of a pro-bono attorney to help in the case. They are offering a $10,000 reward for information in the case.
