The boy was last seen around 8:35 a.m. in the area of Churchville Elementary School in the 2900 block of Level Road, being put into a gray 2022 Nissan Altima with Ohio license plates JFK3146.

WBAL-TV 11 News has learned that a parent witnessed the abduction, followed the vehicle and frantically called police with the make, model, tag and location.

The Harford County Sheriff's Office first posted on X about an abduction around 10:10 a.m. before providing an update shortly before 3 p.m. that the boy was found safe. In another update around 5:10 p.m., the sheriff said the boy was found with a family member.

Maryland State Police did not initially issue an Amber Alert, saying it didn’t meet the criteria, 11 News has learned.

"It was apparent that there was a problem and the sheriff's office was contacted," a sheriff's office official said at a Monday afternoon news conference.

Authorities said Monday afternoon that it was school personnel who observed the abduction and that investigators were working to determine whether it was a relative who took the boy. Investigators said they have interacted with members of the boy's family.
