Leslie Dawn Mashburn walked away from her home in December of 1997. She has not been seen since. She had been battling depression for a long time. She told her mother that she felt like jumping off the bridge. She lived less than half a mile from the bridge at what used to be the Carbonton Dam Bridge on Hwy 42. A search was conducted using search teams in and out of the water surrounding the Dam, river and the roads in that area. Helicopters, Planes, and canines were used as well.

Leslie lived less than half a mile from the bridge at what used to be the Carbonton Dam Bridge on Hwy 42. It was a man made dam which was built in 1921 to provide power to the communities in the North Carolina Sandhills. However, the Carbonton dam was removed from the Deep river in 2005 to restore the river to its original flow and improve water quality. At the time, the Carbonton dam was removed it was the largest dam removal in North Carolina and the second largest in the United States.

There used to be a hanging bridge went across the river through to the power house and people could walk across.
