Manassas Park mom disappears under 'involuntary circumstance' police say

Manassas Park Police say a mother is considered to be missing under "involuntary circumstance" after not being seen since July 31.

Investigators released information about the missing person's case on Aug. 8.

Friends tell us Mamta Kafle Bhatt, 28, never showed up to her Aug. 1 shift at Inova Fairfax Hospital where she worked as a pediatric nurse. Bhatt's former roommate Nadia Navarro says she does not understand why it took so long for police to notify the community that her close friend was missing.

"I last heard from her personally on July 28th. She called me a couple times, but I was asleep. And I got a call from someone I met at Mamta's baby shower and she asked me if I knew where Mamta was," Navarro told WUSA9 in a Manassas parking lot as she organized a search party for her friend.

Over the weekend Navarro launched a Facebook group dedicated to sharing information about Bhatt's case. The group went from social media to actually conducting searches in Prince William County.

Navarro says she met Bhatt when she first came to the United States and they both bonded over their experience being immigrants. She says Bhatt is originally from Nepal and the two grew so close they considered each other family.

"Mamta is not an impulsive person, she's a very responsible person, she's a very calm person. So to hear, that she might be missing, I really doubt she would run away," Navarro added.

Navarro says she has a very difficult time believing that the first-time mother would leave her 10-month-old daughter.

After being at the Manassas Park Police Department for hours, we found Bhatt's husband, Naresh Bhatt.

"I am suffering through a lot," Bhatt told WUSA9.

Bhatt did not want to go into detail about the case but told WUSA9 that he was calling on the community to help him bring his wife home.

In a statement, Manassas Park Police wrote:

"This case is active and ongoing. What we can share at this time is the following: the investigators have conducted several follow-ups with neighbors, friends, co-workers and the husband. The investigators are also utilizing several investigative tools to help in an attempt to locate Mamta Kafle."

So the husband did not report her missing? Do they live together? Where's the baby? If the baby is with him and has been the entire time, .... Well, we know how that usually goes.
Unclear, but according to posts on the Facebook group (RUMOR), Mamta had been posting in a Mom group on Facebook asking about separation from her husband. Another red flag.

With the friend stating she would never leave her baby, I'm assuming the baby lives with her. If she hadn't shown up to work for over a week I think if anybody wise was babysitting, they would have contacted "somebody"... Her job would have contacted "somebody"...

Update says he waited 5 days instead of 8. Not any better. And yes, the husband has the baby.

Search continues for 28-year-old Manassas mother missing for nearly two weeks

A desperate search is underway for a missing mother in Manassas.

Investigators say Mamta Kafle was last seen July 31 in Manassas Park and is missing under involuntary circumstances.

She was reported missing by her husband on Aug. 5, police told DC News Now.

Alongside friends and current and former coworkers, members of the Nepali community in Prince William County spoke at a Monday night gathering about Kafle. They called for answers and pleaded for her safe return home.

Kafle is the mother to a baby less than a year old. Her husband, who did not attend the Monday night gathering, spoke to the people there on the phone. He said he was home taking care of the baby.

“I’m very worried about her,” he said. “She’s my baby’s mom. She’s my wife.”

Kafle is a nurse who has worked at INOVA hospitals as well as the UVA Health Prince William Medical Center.

“She was pregnant and I have never, ever seen anybody lighter,” said friend Sunita Basnt Thapa. “You know, she was very energetic and very eager to help people – [she is] kind of person. And she is there to help everybody out.”

Husband gave an interview to Nepalese news. Translated. Any language quirks are likely the result of the translation.

Missing Mamta Kafle Bhatt's husband Bhatt said: Finding Mamta at any cost is my first and only priority.

Mamata Kafle Bhatt, a nurse of Nepali origin who has been missing for the past 11 days from Manassas, Virginia, has not been found yet. Naresh Bhatt, the husband of the missing Mamta Kafle Bhatt, in a conversation with InePlease said that finding Mamta at any cost is my first and only priority.

In other words, he said that his main goal is to search for affection. Even though the police, relatives, friends and the community were all looking for her, but no one was able to get any information about her, in coordination with social activist Adrian Pokharel of Virginia, a representative of Mamata Kafle Bhatt (Naresh Bhatt) reached the Manassas residence.

Mamta's husband, Naresh Bhatt, in the presence of Adrian Pokharel, discussed his relationship with him and many things in detail. And, he told the community about the events since Mamata's disappearance, through e-please.

He said seriously that I am ready to bear everything but my focus is love. During the conversation, he said that he is ready to help the Manassas Park Police and the Nepalese community.

He called on all the community to remain calm and engage in a positive search operation so that the search operation is not hindered. He said that in this strange situation, he would not be able to respond to everyone mainly through social media, so those who want to be updated about Mamta can get information through Adrian Pokharel, Ashish Sangraula and Sandeep Vastola. He suggested that from now on through these 3 people, things can be understood and things can be said about Mamta.

He said that since he already uses less social media and is not active in it, he is not updated on any activity on social media.

Out of curiosity, he gave detailed information to eneplease that it was you, but after 5 days, your relative, a nurse from New York, had informed him about his disappearance through social media. In addition, he showed the information shared with police and relatives after Mamta's disappearance to Eenplease in the presence of Adrian Pokharel.

When the news came after 5 days of Mamata's disappearance, there were countless questions and concerns about Mr. Naresh Bhatt and the communities were concerned and there were many negative comments on social media.

He admitted that there are sometimes disagreements between his wife and husband and he admitted that the relationship between the two of us was strained. Husband Naresh informed that his wife Mamta sometimes does not come home and leaves home and stays with friends for 2-3 weeks. However, relatives and well-wishers persuaded Mamta to bring her home again, Adrian Pokharel and Ineplease told the representative.

He said that in the past when Naresh Bhatt's daughter was born, even when his parents were called to America, the relationship was strained and they were separated for some time even in 2024. Mamta herself called her mother-in-law, but later the relationship became strained, he said. It was also agreed between both of us to improve the strained relationship between us after my parents flew to Nepal.

While talking to Ineplease, he said that the relationship between us has been good since last May 2024. Since we had to see our daughter, we also made a schedule for both of us to work for 3 days each, and this is how our daily life was going. He continued to go on duty from Monday to Wednesday and Mamta from Thursday to Saturday. Mamta also told her relatives and friends that the relationship was improving, he said.

What happened on the night of July 31st: What happened on the day of August 1st:

Mamta's husband Naresh Bhatt went upstairs with his daughter after having dinner on the night of July 31 as usual. He said that on the day they both go to work, they go without making any noise, saying that their daughter will be disturbed. He said that this is how he goes.

But on August 1, the employers (employers) where Mamata worked, i.e. the hospital, informed the police after she did not arrive at work, he said. But he said that he did not know what time he informed the police and after Mamta did not come until late at night, Naresh came to see her outside her friend's house near Manasas. After that, when he asked 1-2 people about Mamta and did not get any answer, he said that in the past, Mamta did not come home sometimes, so he took it for granted.

But what happened on August 2: Why did the police come to the house?

After August 1, i.e. on August 2, the police came to his house. Naresh had told the police all the history of Mamta leaving the house 2 times in the past. According to the suggestion and advice of the police, they asked to search all sides for 1-2 days. Naresh also said that he spoke with the police of the Manassas Park Police Department.

After that, the police should now file an FIR, i.e. inform the police about Mamta's disappearance, according to which the police came to the house on August 4 and registered a missing report. The police came to the house because the King had to see his daughter.

On August 5th, why did the New York health nurse (nurse) with Sunita Bhandari disappear from another institution 5 days later? Why didn't the king remove himself?

According to Naresh, after registering with the police, he himself sent the photos in coordination with Sunita Bhandari and Sunita Bhandari published them with her consent. Inquiring as to why he did not publish even when his wife disappeared, he also told him that he did not publish because he was an employee in a sensitive department of the US Army and was not active in social networks from the beginning and that he had to focus on taking care of his daughter since she disappeared. In return, Sunita Bhandari took the initiative and said that the first news went through Eenplease.

He said that he did not know about Mamata's disappearance in the days after her disappearance on the social network as to why she did not keep it private or public. When Adrian Pokhrel, the representative of Enplease, checked his social network (Facebook) at the same time, it was found that he did not adjust the ignorance (settings), so Adrian immediately made his social network visible from now on (public).

Also, since he is working in the army, he also showed a message (text) to Adrian Pokharel and Ineplease from the higher authorities of the army, drawing his attention to it.

During the interview, it was said that she spent the whole day taking care of her daughter and after she was gone, it was seen that the daughter did not look for her mother. Since birth, Naresh and Mamta used to take care of each other while going to work. Naresh was seen playing the role of a mother. Along with him, Adrian Pokharel and the representative of Enplease (Vijay Thapa) were witnesses who were happy after putting on a program that children like on television (Doordarshan). He is constantly doing the work of feeding, sleeping and changing diapers.

What are the Manassas Park police doing? How many people are in contact with them?

According to Naresh, the police continue to come to his house twice every day. He said that the police did not come on Saturday and Sunday, but that he would go to the Manassas Park police station on Monday, August 12. He said that the police are continuing their work and that they are fully cooperating.

Who is Naresh Bhatt :

Naresh Bhatt is currently serving in the American Reserve Army. He joined the US Army in 2017 and has been to Afghanistan twice. In Nepal, he worked as a Medical Sales Representative (MR).

But when she does stay away, does she also stay away from her baby that long? If so, and she has started looking into how to separate, "maybe" she thought the baby would be fine with him and took off. I definitely do not think that is what happened though.

‘This is unlike her’: Fears Mount as Mom, Pediatric Nurse Vanishes Under ‘Involuntary Circumstances’

Worry is mounting for a Virginia nurse who has been missing since last month, in what police are calling “involuntary circumstances.”

On Monday night, members of Prince William County’s Nepalese community joined nurses who work with Mamta Kafle Bhatt, 28, in a show of solidarity to find the missing mother.

As CrimeOnline previously reported, Bhaytt, a pediatric nurse at UVA Health Prince William Medical Center, was last seen in Manassas Park on July 31. Police issued a missing person alert over the weekend.

Manassas Park Police Chief Mario Lugo said Bhatt’s husband reported her missing on August 5 after she didn’t check in for work on August 1. When asked about the delay in reporting her missing, the husband told WUSA 9 that that was a question for police.

“This is unlike her,” her friend Sunita Basnet Thapa said, according to NBC Washington. “So, you know, I’m so much worried and it’s been many days.”

Friends, co-workers rally as search continues for missing Manassas Park mom

Friends and co-workers of Mamta Kafle Bhatt gathered at the Manassas Park police station Tuesday to rally support for finding the young mother and nurse who disappeared two weeks ago under "involuntary circumstances," according to police.

Bhatt was last seen July 31, and her husband reported her missing Aug. 5, Manassas Park Police Chief Mario Lugo said. Friends and co-workers said she didn't show up for her Aug. 1 shift as a nurse at UVA Prince William Medical Center in Manassas.

Police have been tight-lipped about their investigation, but Lugo told InsideNoVa that searches for the 28-year-old mother of a 10-month-old girl have been conducted with negative results.

Lugo did not say why Bhatt's husband waited five days to report her missing. Friends said the couple's daughter remains in her husband's care.

"We are investigating all possible circumstances," Lugo said Tuesday afternoon.

He said police don't have a clothing description from when she was last seen, and she does not own a car.

Bhatt's husband and brother have not returned requests for comment.

Bhatt came to the United States from Nepal in 2021 and lived with a roommate in Fairfax County's Mosaic District before marrying. Except for her husband, all of her family still lives in Nepal.

When friends and co-workers realized Bhatt was missing, they created and distributed flyers around Manassas and Manassas Park and began a Facebook page "Find Mamta Kahle Bhatt" to bring awareness to her disappearance. They also held a vigil Monday night at the Nepalese American Community Center in Manassas.

Sunit Basnet Thapa, Bhatt's mentor when she worked at Inova Fairfax Hospital, was one of about 35 people gathered outside the police station Tuesday, hoping for information about her friend.

Her work requested a welfare check on 8/2, just two days after she was last seen. She didn't show up to work on 8/1.
Apparently the husband did the whole "she does this sometimes" (per article above) and they took no further action.

Oh, dude! You better be lining up an attorney right now! I hope you don't, but it looks like you should!

Hopefully he thinks he's smart enough to not need one.

Family questions timeline of Manassas mother's disappearance

The search for a Manassas woman is still underway and as the investigation into her disappearance continues, family members and friends have questions about the timeline that has been provided so far.

Mamta Kafle was last seen almost two weeks ago in Manassas Park. Kaful was last seen at her house on Wednesday, July 31.

Manassas Park Police Chief Mario Lugo did tell FOX 5 that his officers actually went to the home on Friday, Aug. 2 for a welfare check.

Now, a number of Kafle’s friends are questioning the timeline and how long it took for police to confirm she was missing.

"The timelines are not aligning," friend Nadia Navarro said.

The last time Navarro heard from her friend was just days before she went missing.

"July 28 probably is the last time she tried to contact me," Navarro told FOX 5. "It was a missed call."

She didn’t think anything of it until she saw a poster online saying that her 28-year-old friend was missing.

"I was like, ‘that’s strange.’ We had just planned a sleepover to see each other," said Navarro.

According to Manassas Park Police, Kafle was last seen at her home on Wednesday, July 31. Then, on Friday, August 2, one of her co-workers called police worried, asking for a welfare check.

When officers arrived at the house, they spoke with her husband, who didn’t say anything about her being missing. Police left and days later on Monday, August 5, her husband called police to report her missing.

Police pushed out the missing flyer on social media on Thursday, August 8.

When FOX 5 went to Kafle’s home on Monday, her husband said he’d called the police on Friday, Aug. 2 and they came to the house. But according to police, her employer at the hospital called in.

Kafle is a pediatric nurse and since her disapperance, her co-workers and friends have come together. Navarro created a donation campaign.

"The money has gone into flyers, that’s what it was for originally," Navarro said.

But now, since Manassas Park Police tell FOX 5 they’ve"conducted searches with negative results," they’re planning their own search for the woman who is a friend, mother, daughter and wife.

"We’ve purchased and vests. We are going to buy flashlights so we can start conducting our own searches," said Navarro.

In addition to supplies for the search, Kafle’s friend says some of the money raised through the GoFundMe account will go towards purchasing a large billboard and yard sides. The group is planning the search for this mother on Thursday.

Police say even though their searches came up negative, they are still investigating all possible circumstances.

Ummmm....

'I'm the one who's suffering'| Husband of missing woman tells WUSA9 she has gone 'missing' before

As searches continue for a missing mother from Manassas Park, her husband is breaking his silence on her disappearance.

Police say Mamta Kafle Bhatt, 28, was last seen on July 31. Her husband reported her missing on Aug. 5.

"It's like very tough," Naresh Bhatt, her husband, told WUSA9 in an interview Wednesday afternoon. WUSA9 asked him when he last saw or spoke to her. He said they ate dinner together on the night she was last seen.

"We ate on the evening of Wednesday. She was the one who cooked and do the kitchen stuff. We do not have any specific conversation. We do not have any argument or something like that," Naresh Bhatt.

He told WUSA9 they've been married for three years. "She's a special person for me because she's caring and loving," he said "I'm very sad".

WUSA9 asked her husband what happened in between the days he last saw her, and the day he reported her missing.

"On the day she did not come back. Usually once she left, she came back. She did not come back and I just searched around. The next day, police came and police told me she was not at work and I was very serious because she's the one who would never leave her work," he said.

He told WUSA9 he started talking to the officers about how it is not the first time she has gone missing.

"I started talking to police and they say you've got to search around because it is not the first time, it happens before, maybe she's hanging with someone, a close friend or family. That's what I did, but I could not find her and then I say that to the police officer and he say I can file a complaint and I filed a complaint according to that," said Bhatt.

He said she has gone missing three times prior to this. WUSA9 asked him what the circumstances around her disappearance those times was.

"At that time, she has some demands so that's why she just step out and stay with a couple times with her friends and one time she moved to Falls Church, to someone, I don't know the name but she has an apartment," said Naresh Bhatt.

He said she's never been gone this long before.

WUSA9 asked him what his message is to those who've expressed frustrations with the way he has handled her disappearance.

"I'm the one who is suffering. She is my baby's Mom. She is my wife. I'm the one suffering, so I don't what I'm supposed to say," said Naresh Bhatt. He told WUSA9 that he's very worried about where she is.

His message for her, if she sees this: "Hey just come back. I'm myself and my baby, we are waiting like every second, every minute we are waiting. If you are listening, just we are waiting here for you. We need you," he said.

"Mamta is missing and I have only one concern. Mamta is my wife and my baby's Mom. Altogether we need her back," said Naresh Bhatt.

TIMELINE: Police release more details about critical missing Virginia mother and nurse
Police in Manassas Park, Virginia released a timeline Thursday into the disappearance of Mamta Kafle Bhatt, a 28-year-old mother and pediatric nurse who has been missing for more than two weeks. She was last seen on July 31 but wasn't officially reported missing to police until Aug. 5.

The missing person case has now been elevated to critical, according tothe Manassas Park Police Department.

After an investigation, police learned Mamta had a "significant lack of recent contact" with her friends, family, employer, and social media accounts.

The case has garnered attention, including from the Embassy of Nepal -- since Mamta is of Nepalese ethnicity.

For days, friends have searched the neighborhood and trails nearby for Mamta. On Thursday, loved ones continued their search for Mamta.

Her husband,Naresh, spoke to the public on Wednesday -- thanking them for their efforts.

"Thank you for what you are doing coming here," he said. "I need your help in a positive way."

Here's the timeline according to police:
  • July 27: Mamta was last see at the UVA Health Prince William Medical Center.
  • July 28: Mamta spoke to a friend.
  • July 31: Naresh last saw Mamta.
  • August 2: Police responded to a welfare check at Mamta's residence and spoke to her husband, who did not want to report her as missing at that time.
  • August 5: Naresh officially reported Mamta as missing to the police.
  • August 5-8: Detectives conducted an "extensive" investigation into the disappearance.
Police initially determined that Kafle did not meet enough of the Virginia State Police's criteria to be considered more than a missing person.

"Even if she was desperate, even if she might have been facing something, she wouldn't have left her daughter," her friend Nadia Navarro told 7News. "She was very self-sacrificial that way, no matter what would have been happening."

After her name was entered as missing by Virginia State Police, detectives continued to look into her disappearance.

Given her lack of contact with people in her life and other circumstances, the detectives were able to elevate her status to involuntary.

Kafle's husband, friends and co-workers have been cooperative during the investigation, according to the Manassas Park Police.

During a gathering outside headquarters, some loved ones took to the podium to say Mamta had left home twice before earlier this year for a few days at a time.

But both times, she let her family know where she was.

'We are her family now' | Community groups search for missing Manassas Park mother

Friends and concerned residents from across the DMV conducted the largest joint search yet in the effort to locate a 28-year-old mother Manassas Park mother who has been missing for more than two weeks.

More than 60 community members gathered at Bloom Park in Manassas Park Thursday. The place was selected because of the close proximity to Mamta's home and because she liked to take walks in the wooded area.

Jennifer Cooper is among the community members who have taken an interest in Mamta's case and on Thursday helped lead the search groups equipped with yellow vests, whistles, and some canines.

"It gives me chill bumps. Most of the people here have no idea who she is. We have people from Dale City, Falls Church, that just felt compelled to come out here and help because we know she doesn't have family here, so we are her family now, so we are going to go out and look for her," Cooper said.

The amateur search effort was started by Mamta's close friend and former roommate Nadia Navarro who created the Facebook group "Find Mamta Kafle Bhatt."

People participating in the search group say they felt compelled by Mamta's story, particularly her 11-month-year-old daughter who has not seen her mother in more than two weeks.

Dahel says the Nepalese community in the DMV is also growing concerned about new details they are finding out about Mamta.

"Looks like she has reached out to various people for help. There are groups where she seeks certain information. You know, her coworkers and her friends might know more about the case. But all we know is that she is missing," she added.

The Consul General of Nepal in Washington, D.C. Uttam Ghimire told reporters that he is in close contact with Mamta's brother.

"We reached out to the Department of State and the Manassas Park Police requesting an investigation into this case," Ghimire said. He also added that because Manassas Park is not their jurisdiction, they have to rely on the law enforcement authorities of the United States, but they have requested that they expedite the investigation.

While I am not in any way moving on from the husband, I will say that some of the "odd" things it is being said that he said might be due to him speaking broken English and/or a bad interpretation. I do have to give him that, but I'm still pretty convinced he knows far more than he's saying at the very least. While I know he's not Vietnamese, his speech patterns remind me a lot when speaking with my Vietnamese neighbors with their broken English.

Manassas Park mayor calls for patience with police as search for missing mother continues

The desperate search for a missing Manassas Park mother continues to expand into more community searches and social media outreach.

The incident has sparked searches from community members, including in Blooms Park, which friends say Bhatt frequented. The community is conducting another search at the same park on Saturday at 9 a.m. with the help of a former marine.

Manassas Park Councilman Michael Carrera, who also works in law enforcement, strongly supports any community searches even if they’re not officially by police.

“Any immediate attention to solve any of that is always a benefit for the community and families waiting for loved ones to come home,” Carrera told WUSA9. “We do have resources and mutual agreement with a lot of agencies so if that's a necessity, it will be looked at.”

Manassas Park Police didn’t respond to questions from WUSA9 regarding what specific agencies were assisting in the case.

The organizer of the Facebook group asked people not to spread anything that hasn’t been verified by investigators.

“Just because the police are not able to tell us what is happening does not mean they are not doing their job,” the Facebook post read. “I believe as soon as it is safe for them to tell us something, they will.”

Manassas Park Mayor Jeanette Rishell echoed those sentiments in a statement she prepared to be read at a vigil for Bhatt.

"The entire city stands with Mamta and her family, and the entire city prays for her safe return," Rishell said. "Please know that our police department has been working very hard on this disappearance and they are doing everything possible. Not everything can be shared, because in any investigation, that might compromise the investigation itself. I ask everyone to please allow the police investigation to continue to its conclusion. The process honors Mamta just as we all honor her and pray for her safe return."
