Details of Disappearance

Martha's twin brother, Lawson Green, picked up from her hostess job at the Holiday Inn on April 15, 1987. They were driving back to their family's residence in White Bluff, Tennessee in a Monte Carlo with tinted windows that Lawson had borrowed, when the vehicle ran out of gas on Highway 46 near Fabric Road in Dickson County, Tennessee at approximately 9:00 p.m. This was about half a mile from the Holiday Inn. A photo of a similar car is posted with this case summary.

A family of four pulled in behind them and offered to help. Martha said she was scared and Lawson said she should come with him and the family so they could get gas, but she said she'd stay behind. Lawson left with the family to purchase fuel, leaving Martha alone in the car. He discovered she had vanished upon his return about ten to fifteen minutes later. Martha's handbag was still inside the vehicle, as were the keys. There was no sign of a struggle at the scene. She has never been seen again.

Authorities had a suspect in Martha's disappearance, Robert McKinley Richards. He was incarcerated in Florida on rape charges after she went missing. He took investigators to several places where he claimed he had buried Martha's body, but searches of those locations turned up no evidence.

Richards was subsequently murdered in prison and was never charged in Martha's case, but he is still considered the primary suspect in her disappearance. Martha's case remains unsolved.

Martha Leanne Green’s disappearance still haunts Dickson County

Posted: Apr 15, 2022

The 35th anniversary of Martha Leanne Green’s disappearance is today, April 15. Green, 17, was one day away from prom night.

She and her brother were driving down Highway 46 near I-40 when their car ran out of gas. Her brother went to get gas and she decided to stay with the car.

When her brother got back to the car nine minutes later, she was gone. Green was never seen again.

Cheatham County Sheriff Mike Breedlove was part of the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation during the investigation. He led a team of investigators, who spent countless hours searching and looking into her disappearance.

The team ended up naming Rob Richards as the main suspect in the case.

According to Breedlove, he told them that he raped and killed her, then buried her body. Richards led investigators on a wild burial chase and in the end they couldn’t find her remains. A cellmate ended up killing Richards in prison.

“The lack of DNA technology and other methods during the 1970 and 80s made abduction cases more frequent and harder to solve,” Sheriff Breedlove admitted.

36 years after Dickson Co. teen disappeared, investigators keep digging for answers

It's a mystery that has haunted Dickson County for 36 years, but investigators are still working to find out what happened to a teenager who mysteriously disappeared.

"I think about it a lot," said Lt. Sarah Humphreys with the Dickson County Sheriff's Office. "Another year has gone by and we still don’t know anything 36 years later. We don’t know what happened to Leanne."

Martha Leanne Green, who went by Leanne, was last seen on Highway 46 near Fabric Road on April 15, 1987. According to the Dickson County Sheriff's Office, Leanne was picked up from her job at the Holiday Inn by her twin brother. While on their way home, they ran out of gas.

A family coming home from church stopped to help them and took her brother to a nearby gas station. Leanne decided to stay in the car, but after about ten minutes they came back and she was gone. Her purse and wallet were still in the car, as well as the car keys, and there was no sign of a struggle.

Leanne was a junior at Dickson County High School and was planning to go to prom the following night. Her pink prom dress and shoes were on the bed at her home the night she disappeared.

The search was launched by the Dickson County Sheriff's Office. It grew into a large investigation involving multiple agencies including the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and the FBI. Hundreds of searches have been conducted, and investigators have followed up on thousands of tips through the years.

A Florida inmate, Robert Richards, confessed to murdering Leanne, but no evidence connected him to the scene. He was never charged, and was later stabbed to death in his prison cell.

Investigators said they still review the case on a regular basis in hopes they find a piece to the puzzle they missed. They also continue to follow up on any new leads that come in. They also say tips from the public can help heat up the investigation.

"I just think it's possible that there is still somebody out there who knows something that they never came forward with," said Lt. Humphreys. "Even if it's something small, please tell us."
