Circumstances of Discovery

On February 9, 1974, police recovered the skeletal remains of the decedent, clad in badly rotted clothing, from the Skippack Creek bed near Old Baptist Road and Fern Avenue near Collegeville.

According to the original report from a forensic anthropologist, the decedent had arthritis so advanced she had to be in a humpback position when attempting to walk upright. She would have been unable to raise her arms above the level of her face without extreme pain. Her right arm was broken in two or three places as the result of a blow from a heavy object, and several neck bones were broken, indicating strangulation. Her left foot had been skillfully cut off and found inside a plastic bag labeled "Marvel Enriched Bread"; the right foot was not found.

The decedent was originally believed to have been the victim of a hit and run. This was based on her broken arm and location discovered in relation to Old Baptist Road, but that theory was abandoned when investigators received the forensic anthropologist's report.

I remembered this case, It's been awhile. With the sketch, But I never saw the bust. And I remember the really strange fact of her foot in a bread bag. Deceased for almost 50 yrs and no one was apparently looking for her. IMO this was perpetuated by someone close to her that was a caregiver. I think it's reasonable to assume she was a shut in for the most part due to her pain and health issues. If she can be identified, I believe they can identify her killer. If she lived her full life, Say she was 60 at the time. It was 48 years ago. 108 yrs old. So the perpetrator may not he alive. But at least LE could identify the killer to close the case and give her back her name.

If she was skeletal, How did they determine she was obese?. Her clothing?.

If she was skeletal, How did they determine she was obese?. Her clothing?.
Very likely the clothing. But there are some skeletal changes that can occur when you are overweight/obese. Particularly in the femur / thigh bone. Bone density and certain minerals can also be different.

Her reconstruction drawings do not seem (to me) to depict an obese person.
NamUs and Doe Network says she is 5'2" and 170 which would technically put her in the obese category based on BMI. But not really what most of us picture when using the term "obese".

Police eventually found the body of an elderly white female whose foot was detached.

More than 30 years later, police are still investigating who that skull belonged to and how the woman died.

When police investigated the scene in 1974, they found the skeletal remains of a white woman who was between 65 and 75 years old.

Since the discovery, Pennsylvania State Police and Lower Providence Police have had multiple experts examine the remains to give them further clues about the skeletal remains.

Investigators placed "Jane Doe's" time of death in mid-December 1973.

This is very confusing.

This is very confusing.
It’s possible that they made some assumptions early on and DNA testing later revealed she was not white. It wouldn’t be the first time.
Either that or there is an error along the way somewhere.

I found this which might give a bit more about how she died but it still does not give you any idea on who she may be.

EDITORS NOTE: The Cold Case series was conceived by Matt Coughlin former police reporter at The Reporter who wrote this story before he left.

Two brothers and a sister were sledding near Old Baptist Road in Lower Providence on Feb. 9 1974 when they came upon a gruesome discovery.

William Wood then 11 climbed down an embankment by the Skippack Creek at about 1 p.m. and there under a fallen tree he saw a human skull.

Williams brother Joe 12 and sister Joanne 14 climbed down and helped William retrieve the skull and the three then ran home and showed their father who called police.

I saw the skull under the log William later told police. My brother and sister helped me get it out and we carried it home.

Police eventually found the body of an elderly white female whose foot was detached.

More than 30 years later police are still investigating who that skull belonged to and how the woman died.

Since the discovery Pennsylvania State Police and Lower Providence Police have had multiple experts examine the remains to give them further clues about the skeletal remains.

Investigators placed Jane Does time of death in mid-December 1973.

Forensic anthropologists and the coroner have estimated she was between 5 feet 5 inches and 5 feet 10 inches tall. Examiners also told police the woman was overweight and had severe arthritis in her back and knees.

Jane Does left foot was found in a Marvel Bread plastic bag detached from the leg still wearing a purple slipper that appeared to have been handmade.

The victim was wearing a light-colored knit dress and an orange smock or housecoat with small light-colored floral designs on it.

The remains of at least 11 still unidentified bodies have been found in Bucks and Montgomery counties over the last 48 years, according to the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System (NamUs). Here is a look at those open cases.

Woman found along road in Lower Providence

Feb. 9, 1974: The body of a white female approximately 60 to75-years old was found along an unidentified road. Authorities estimated she had been dead for three months. She was 5-feet-2-inches tall and weighed about 170 pounds. She had evidence of arthritis in her back and knees and new fractures to her left forearm. Her death was listed as a murder in newspaper stories. She was found wearing a corset, bra, girdle, a housecoat with orange and light flower designs, she had safety pins in her right side pocket, stockings, a light-colored knit dress, purple hand-crocheted slippers inside plastic bags labeled "Marvel Enriched Bread"

Revisiting this. Another source says between 5'5-5-10. Alot of given information that is all over the place. IMO. If they didn't get a hit on the DNA. They never will. This is so sad. I stay with what I stated before. Thst it was someone they knew. Strangulation, Extreme anger. Cutting off a foot, then placing it in a bread bag. IDK WTH That is. But it seems that means something. But, No one remembers her?. The person around her?. Then all of a sudden neither, Or one not seen?. I'll never understand that. Yes, It looks like a very isolated area. But, In that case, They know who lives where. I am really baffled by this.
