WHO WAS THIS MYSTERY MAN WHO DIED ON A LOCAL MOUNTAIN?

Newly found remains may have been there a very long time
June 27, 2015

(NORTH BEND, WA.) -- Who was this man? Where did he come from? Did he have a family?

Was he ever reported missing? Why were his remains not found many years ago on as busy a hiking mountain as Mt. Si is?

How did he die? An accident? Was he murdered? A victim of an animal attack perhaps? Did he died alone?

Those are questions the King County Sheriff's Office is hoping someone out there may be able to help them answer.

All that's left of the mystery man now are a few bones, a weathered hiker's watch that stopped running just before 9:30, a pair of glasses and a shovel.

Silent testimony to a man who appeared to love the outdoors.

Detectives at the sheriff's office Major Crimes Unit would like the public's help in identifying skeletal remains found on Mt. Si near North Bend Washington.

"Evidence suggests the remains may be from the mid 90’s," said a sheriff's office statement.

On Tuesday June 16th two off-trail hikers came across what they believed to be human, skeletal remains near the “haystack” on Mt Si.

After they called 911, deputies came to the scene, collected the remains and took them to the King County Medical Examiners office which was able to determine these things:

The remains are in fact human

They are believed to be from a Caucasian male, roughly 30-60 years old and who was likely 5’7-6’0 tall.

No cause of death has yet been established

Please view the pictures at upper right to see some items found with the remains: a pair of tortoise shell glasses, a Swiss Army watch and an Ortovox brad shovel.

In addition to those items, they found a green, Jansport backpack and a pair of white, Nike, high top tennis shoes, size 12. A black, leather wallet was also found with the remains but contained no identification.

If anyone has information on the identity of the mystery man they are urged to call the King County Sheriff’s Office 24/7 at (206) 296-3311, or send tips to mcutips@kingcounty.gov

Human bones found on Mount Si; detectives seek help to identify deceased

Jul 7, 2015 at 4:21PM
Few clues can be found to identify the human remains that two hikers recently discovered on Mount Si, just some bones, a pair of glasses, a watch, shovel and some clothing. Missing persons reports from the past few decades don’t help, either.

“There are no (reports)… nothing corresponds to any of this,” said Stan Seo, King County Sheriff’s office spokesperson.

Detectives with the KCSO Major Crimes Unit are asking for the public’s help in identifying the person.

According to the Sheriff’s department, two off-trail hikers discovered some human remains on June 16, near the Haystack rock on Mount Si. The hikers called 911 and Sheriff’s personnel collected the remains and brought them to the County Medical Examiner.

The medical examiner’s office reported that the remains were human, likely from a white man between ages 30 and 60, and about five feet, seven inches tall.

Detectives said the remains could be from the mid 90s. Seo could not say how the remains were dated, but said it was likely that forensic science could determine how long the remains had been affected by exposure.

No cause of death has been determined, mainly because only skeletal pieces were found.

“We have no idea,” said Seo. “It could have been natural causes… You have people who, unfortunately go beyond what their bodies can do.”

The remains were “a bit scattered” along the rock, Seo said, along with the person’s effects.

Items found with the remains included a pair of tortoise shell glasses, a Swiss Army watch, an Ortovox shovel and a black leather wallet that contained no identification. A green, Jansport backpack and a pair of white, Nike, high top tennis shoes, size 12, were also located in the area.

Anyone with information on the identity of these remains is asked to call the King County Sheriff’s Office, any time, at (206) 296-3311, or send tips to mcutips@kingcounty.gov.

Remains Discovered on Mount Si Identified as Human, Medical Examiner Working on Identification
June 23, 2015

Numerous Snoqualmie Valley residents noticed the helicopter hovering and circling over Mount Si Wednesday, June 17, 2015

Numerous Snoqualmie Valley residents noticed the helicopter hovering and circling over Mount Si Wednesday, June 17, 2015 as nty Sheriff’s Office (KCSO) worked to remove remains discovered by an off-trail hiker on a remote area of Mount Si earlier in the week.

Detective Jason Houck said a Guardian helicopter hoisted KCSO personnel onto the mountain to carefully collect and transport the remains to the King County Medical Examiner’s Office, who would positively determine if the remains were human.

On Tuesday, June 23rd, the Medical Examiner’s (ME) Office identified the remains as human. Detective Houck said KCSO detectives, as well as the ME, “are continuing to work on an identification, as well as the cause of death.”

There was speculation when the remains were discovered that they might be those of missing skydiver, 29-year-old Kurt Ruppert of Florida. Ruppert went missing in early January 2013 after jumping from a plan over Mount Si. A large search and rescue mission ensued before it was called off after four days.

Detective Houck said the Medical Examiner and KCSO are certain the remains are NOT those of Ruppert, that they had been on Mount Si “way longer” than the two and half years since the skydiver disappeared.

The Medical Examiner’s Office hopes to have more information about the remains, including a possible identification and how long they had been on the mountain, by early next week.

Remains Located on Remote Area of Mount Si
June 19, 2015

Numerous Snoqualmie Valley residents noticed the helicopter hovering and circling over Mount Si Wednesday, June 17, 2015 and today, June 19th, King County Sheriff’s Office (KCSO) Detective Jason Houck said the helicopter was responding to a mission for remains discovered on a remote area of the mountain this week.

According to Det. Houch, an off-trail hiker discovered what he thought might be human remains and notified police.

A KCSO Guardian helicopter was used to hoist KCSO personnel down into the remote area to collect/recover the remains and transport them to the King County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Houch did said they “definitely” know the remains are not those of 29-year-old Kurt Ruppert of Florida who went missing while skydiving above Mount Si in early January 2013. Houch said the remains located this week have been there “way longer” than when Ruppert went missing two and a half years ago.

Houch stated the medical examiner’s office is expected to examine the remains on Monday and determine for sure that they are human. The results should be released on Tuesday, June 23, 2015.
