Editor’s Note:

This is Part 3 in the Stone County Enterprise series “Miss Wiggins,” which reexamines the history of Stone County’s oldest known cold case. Some details are graphic and disturbing. You can read Part 1 here, and Part 2 here.

There are currently 14,190 unknown remains in the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System database, which are all cases that do not correspond with the other 22,252 additional missing persons cases.

Since established in the 2000s, the database has helped investigators cross-reference cases across the nation and bring closure to families.

ut some cases like Miss Wiggins continue to languish with no answers for years.

Her case is not unique.

Of all unidentified remains cases on NaMus, 2,723 are female.

Eighteen of those cases are located in Mississippi, with Miss Wiggins being the sole NaMus case recorded in Stone County.

She was found on October 5, 1980. At first, believed to be a missing socialite from Biloxi, her case fell into relative obscurity and went cold over the past 42 years.

But that could change as DNA forensics and research methods are advancing faster than ever.

A NEW HOPE FOR JANE and JOHN DOE

While Miss Wiggins waits for a name and family to claim her, Mississippi cold cases like hers are being solved faster than anywhere else in the country thanks to geneticists, investigators, and dedicated researchers pioneering a new field.

Using cutting-edge technology and comprehensive DNA analysis, Othram is solving decades-old cold cases left and right.
