FBI: Woman escapes makeshift cinder block cell in Klamath Falls, man arrested

A Klamath Falls man is in custody after a woman escaped from a makeshift cinder block cell in his garage, the FBI of Portland says.

According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation 29-year-old, Negasi Zuberi (aka Sakima, Justin Hyche and Justin Kouassi), traveled from his home to Seattle on July 15. Once in Seattle, Zuberi posed as an undercover police officer, picking up a prostitute.

The victim told police Zuberi pointed a taser at her, placed her in handcuffs and leg irons before putting her in the back of his car.

During the 450-mile trip back to Klamath Falls, the victim reported Zuberi sexually assaulted her multiple times during the trip. Once at his home, Zuberi moved her into the self-built cinder block cell at his home at 1336 N Eldorado Avenue in Klamath Falls.

“According to the complaint, this woman was kidnapped, chained, sexually assaulted, and locked in a cinderblock cell. Police say, she beat the door with her hands until they were bloody in order to break free. Her quick thinking and will to survive may have saved other women from a similar nightmare,” says Assistant Special Agent in Charge, Stephanie Shark with the FBI Portland Field Office.

The victim was eventually able to break down the door to the cell when Zuberi was away and escaped the home. She then was able to flag down a passing driver who called 911.

Zuberi fled after the woman’s escape but was found in Reno where he was taken into custody after a 45-minute standoff at a Reno shopping center

FBI officials said during a Wednesday press conference they believe there may be more victims.

The FBI also noted that the suspect has four separate sexual assaults in other states including drugging drinks and posing as an officer.

The FBI says because Zuberi has lived in over 10 states since 2016, (California, Washington, Oregon, Colorado, Utah, Florida, New York, New Jersey, Alabama, and Nevada) the investigation is widening to search for additional victims.

I’m glad he tried to get out and got caught. Now he has more charges and we can make sure that they don’t let him out quickly, as they often do in this state.

I agree with that thought but this guy sounds like he has done so many things he shouldn't even have been out and it shouldn't be a problem keeping him inside. And his escape attempt concerns me. This is one evil nasty POS what he did to JUST this woman, much less the other things he has done. He does not need to escape.

Man accused of locking a woman in a cell in Oregon faces rape, kidnapping charges in separate case

A man accused of abducting a woman in Seattle, driving her hundreds of miles to his home in Oregon and locking her in a makeshift cinder block cell is facing fresh charges of kidnapping and rape in a separate case involving alleged crimes two months earlier, court documents show.

An indictment returned by a grand jury in southern Oregon’s Klamath County says that on or around May 6, Negasi Zuberi kidnapped a victim referred to as an unidentified Jane Doe in the county in order to rape her. The indictment also alleges that he knowingly injured the victim by using or threatening to use weapons including a handgun and a stun gun.

Zuberi was indicted on 11 counts, including first-degree rape, sexual abuse and kidnapping. The indictment was filed with the Klamath County Circuit Court last week.

Online court records didn’t appear to list a defense attorney for Zuberi for the case, which is in the state court system. There was no immediate response Saturday afternoon to an email and voicemail left with the defense attorney assigned to the other case, which is in federal court, asking whether he was also representing Zuberi in the new case.

Zuberi already faces charges of interstate kidnapping and transporting an individual across state lines with intent to engage in criminal sexual activity, related to the incident that led to his arrest in July. Zuberi has pleaded not guilty to those charges.

The FBI said it was looking for additional victims after linking him to violent sexual assaults in other states.

The federal case is set to go to trial later this year.

Good. I'm glad he is an idiot, And went across state lines making it federal. While I hope there are no more victims. If there are. I hope they can connect him to them.

It sounds as if they suspect there may be many more.

Well it isn't too much of a delay and this one isn't an old case if I recall so not going to say much about it but am just doing my usual of pointing out another case with a delay.

:thud:

They should learn to report more like "is supposed to start next spring".

That he should go to trial in March but probably won't. That almost no cases go that way and it is entirely unlikely.

The new date is set for such and such March of 2024 but should caution that generally is never the case and will likely change.

Especially as his atty is asking for dismissal and claiming the main evidence was destroyed quickly.

I fully expect I will be griping about a delay again in just a few months. This one is just getting started but from all they said and have done I expect it to be per the norm. Delay after delay.

Wasn’t it already delayed? I thought the trial was supposed to start this month.

Wasn’t it already delayed? I thought the trial was supposed to start this month.
yeah and I think I remarked at that point well it wasn't one that had been delayed time after time yet (of course it hadn't as it was new) and so didn't make a huge deal of it but pointed it out as all know i do always, that here we go with more to come i'm sure. it is so expected, gets so old and is such a game and the norm. And real lives are affected. i have little respect for what our system has become. I do have respect for some in it and the vestiges of what was good and did work on occasion.

why do they even set unrealistic dates with the b.s. they know is going to go on these days. it ties up the court calendar and then no other case can efficiently be moved into its place because it is booked already. it is all so stupid, ineffective and slow. Then of course it is a clusterfuc* of three way scheduling and maybe four way or more if you need experts on that date. It's ridiculous and that is WITHOUT the games and delays by all of those when needed. Or lies as to availability.

Any BUSINESS or even family run this way would be defunct long ago and imo it pretty much is. People are dead before justice comes and not because a killer hasn't been caught but because even when they have been, it take a lifetime before the process concludes.

I don't know how anyone in the public can think this is okay and support it.

maybe it has always been bad but delays and appeals and so forth never used to be this had or this way years ago.

and i don't know what the answer is BUT one answer would be expecting it to run efficiently or even HALFWAY so as any business, etc. would.

Any lawyer or judge can just pretty much say they are booked or unavailable with no proof to create a delay or they had something come up. That's just for starters. That's without defense b.s. And more.

I could go into a general diatribe but i will stifle.

Why don't they just set trial from the start five years out and if they can't meet then whatever side can't is fired and case won by the other side. If judge can't and may not even be same judge (probably hoped for in some cases), also fired. Lol but not. I look back on how most of us older ones were raised to think we had this great system and I don't see it at all any more. I'm not saying we stone people or anything but it is a joke or at least it sure has turned into one OTHER than the jury of peers, average people like any of us which ALSO has and does get messed with it's a bureaucratic mess to justify govt. jobs, need for attorneys and more.

And GAMES. When real people, victims and justice is involved. It's quite sick.

And speedy trial? That's ANOTHER subject altogether. YES there should be a right to one. WITH SOME RULES.

My diatribe appears to be starting so I will stop cold.

Yeah. It's always an excuse to delay
Usually on the part of the defense. I am soooo tired of it!!!!

Klamath Falls man accused of kidnapping woman from Seattle faces new federal indictment

A new federal indictment accuses Negasi Zuberi of Klamath Falls of an attempted escape from the Jackson County Jail and a second kidnapping in addition to the alleged abduction of a woman from Washington to Oregon last summer.

A three-week trial is now set to start in federal court in Medford on Oct. 7. Prosecutor Jeffrey S. Sweet estimated at least 50 witnesses will be called at trial, with roughly half based in Klamath Falls or Medford.

The superseding indictment now accuses Zuberi, 30, of also kidnapping a second woman in Klamath County on May 6, of an attempted escape from his cell in the Jackson County Jail in August and of unlawfully possessing a handgun, a shotgun, two rifles and numerous rounds of ammunition as a convicted felon.

He initially faced a two-count indictment charging him with kidnapping and transportation with intent to engage in sexual activity.

The new eight-count indictment charges him with two counts of kidnapping, two counts of being a felon in possession of firearms and ammunition, two counts of being a felon with ammunition, and one count each of transportation for criminal sexual activity and attempted escape.

The new indictment doesn’t give any details on the second kidnapping charge.

Zuberi was transferred back to the Jackson County Jail last week from the federal prison at Sheridan.

Zuberi requested the transfer in a hearing before U.S. District Judge Michael J. McShane last week.

“I would like to just be in a safe environment. I don’t feel safe at Sheridan. There’s violent people there,” he said in court.

McShane said that would be up to the U.S. Marshals Service. “Jackson County may not want you back there,” McShane told Zuberi, considering his attempted escape charge. But jail records show he was returned to Jackson County last Thursday.

Klamath Falls man requests to represent himself against federal criminal charges

Today, a Klamath Falls man facing federal kidnapping charges said he wants to represent himself in his criminal trial. He also requested to be referred to as "Sukima Zuberi" in court.

30-year-old Negasi Zuberi had a late afternoon arraignment when federal prosecutors requested maximum sentences on all eight criminal counts against Zuberi. He has another hearing April 1, 2024, before Zuberi decides to represent himself in court fully.

Zuberi has two counts of kidnapping, one count of transportation for criminal sexual activity, two counts of felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition, two counts of a felon in possession of ammunition and one count of attempted escape from custody.

Zuberi received a new federal court indictment last month, charging him with kidnapping a second victim and with weapons charges from a prior conviction of assault with a deadly weapon.

:thud:well I hope Sukima Negasi Zuberi or whoever he is represents self well and is subject to all the rules lawyers are. So it is with FEDERAL charges he wants to do so. Unsure if I've ever seen that in a federal court. Of course we haven't "seen" it as they air or televise and record nothing but just saying. Which by the way I disagree with in this day and age.

I guess the 30 year old sexual kidnapping assaulting creep now also fancies himself a lawyer. Maybe once behind bars, he can do the courses and complete law school when he fails at representing himself.

It's too bad we won't get to see how ridiculous he is and intends to make this.

With what he is charged with, if guilty, they'd better have him shackled as he dances around the courtroom with his antics. I'd say the judge better be behind shatter proof glass and any female in the room would be wise to not be present and leave before he tackles and assaults her.

The guy sounds like a total evil freak.

Oh, that should work!

I love it when they went to represent themselves.
