Coronavirus: Missing Owen Harding 'on 280-mile trek to girlfriend'

A teenager missing for six days may have tried to walk 280 miles to see his girlfriend, his mother has said.

Owen Harding, 16, was last seen leaving his home in Saltdean, Sussex, last Thursday.

His mum Stella said he had been upset at being unable to get a train to visit girlfriend Meg in Pocklington, near York, amid the coronavirus lockdown.

She said relatives were desperately worried and urged the public to be on the lookout for Owen.

In an earlier appeal over her son's disappearance - shared by family friend Nadia Sawalha - Ms Harding said he had left home to watch the sunset.

Some of Owen's friends have since said they believe he has attempted to walk from Saltdean to the North, Ms Harding said.

"While it is extremely out of character for Owen to leave and not be in contact, Covid-19 has put everyone under lots of strain and we don't want to rule anything out," she said.

"Because search activity and resources are limited right now, I'm begging the UK public to look out for him whilst out on their daily walks.

Missing Brighton teenager may have tried to walk to Yorkshire to see girlfriend

Owen Harding disappeared from his home in Saltdean, near Brighton, last week as a nationwide appeal is launched to find him.

The teenager was reportedly upset he couldn’t visit his girlfriend in Pocklington due to the lockdown and there are fears he may have attempted to walk 280 miles north.

He is particularly vulnerable given the current Government guidance on the need for social distancing during the coronavirus outbreak.

In a heartfelt plea, his mother Stella Harding said yesterday: “We’re all desperately worried about him and the situation is an emergency as it is now six days since he went missing.

“When Owen left, he was upset that he wasn’t going to be able to get a train to visit his girlfriend, Meg, in East Yorkshire due to the lockdown.”

“Because search activity and resources are limited right now, I’m begging the UK public to look out for him whilst out on their daily walks. But please make sure that, in doing so, you adhere to social distancing and government guidance and do not put yourself or anyone else at risk.”

He appears to have not taken much with him. Where is he staying? Sleeping outside? It’d be extremely difficult to have someone take you in for the night right now.

Yes it doesn't sound promising. One can only hope he is upset and hiding with friends over upset with his parents or the gf and him are together. Unlikely but hope so. At 16 when you get yourself in a really big mess, you often think there is no getting out of it and make it worse and dig the hole bigger. But again, unlikely.

Owen Harding: Two men may have seen missing teen in Saltdean

POLICE are hoping to trace the identities of two people who may have seen a missing boy.

The appeal comes after fresh CCTV emerged in the search for Owen Harding, 16, who left his home in Saltdean on the evening of March 26.

He told his mother he was going to look at the sunset. But friends believe he may be trying to walk to visit his girlfriend, Meg Rhodes, who lives near York, after he was unable to travel by train because of Covid-19 lockdown restrictions.

Footage shows a person – believed to be Owen ¬– walking along Hamsey Road in Saltdean at 6.15pm on the day he went missing.

It is believed he was heading south in the direction of the A259.

Now, fresh video has come to light which shows two people police believe may have seen Owen as he walked along the road.

Detective Inspector Mark Rosser said: “We have viewed this CCTV footage supplied to us by a member of the public and we believe this could be Owen.

“Within the footage there are two people who may have seen who we think is Owen walking along this road. Do you recognise yourself in the pictures? If this is you, we would really appreciate it if you could make contact with us as you may hold vital information to our investigation.

“It’s been over a week since Owen was last seen or heard from and we are continuing to extensively investigate the circumstances around his disappearance.

Owen Harding missing: search continues for missing teenager

A 16-YEAR-OLD boy has been missing for almost a month.

Owen Harding has not been seen by his mother since he left his Saltdean home on March 26.

He disappeared after telling his mum he was going to watch the sunset shortly after 6pm.

Police forces have carried out extensive searches of the surrounding area and a campaign aiming to find him has been shared thousands of times on social media.

But Owen’s whereabouts remains unknown.

His girlfriend Meg Rose believes the 16-year-old may have attempted to walk 280 miles to see her at her home in York.

But his mother, Stella Harding, said friends and family’s “emotional state has deteriorated over the last few weeks”.

She said: “It is very unlike Owen to go missing and to not be in contact with friends, family or his girlfriend.

“Clearly, it is a really difficult time at the moment and we’re all desperately worried, especially since this is so out of character.

“We need to be open to investigating all avenues at this critical time, when the clock is ticking and Owen still hasn’t been found.”

Owen Harding missing from Saltdean: No new lines of enquiry

A DETECTIVE investigating the disappearance of a 16-year-old boy says no further lines of enquiry have been made after the most recent appeals.

It is believed he may have tried to walk 280 miles to see his 16-year-old girlfriend Meg in Yorkshire, as the two had spoken to each other and calmed each other down. But there are also fears that Owen may have been involved in a tragedy at the cliffs.

Detective Inspector Mark Rosser said the investigation remains open. But recent appeals to track down people in Saltdean who may have been the last to see Owen have not produced any further information, the detective said.

“The investigation remains open and we would welcome any further information that might lead us to Owen.”

Owen was last seen on CCTV heading towards the cliffs at 6.13pm. His phone disconnected from the mast at 6.23pm.

So he was headed toward the cliffs in 10 minutes later his phone stopped working? Would he have made it to the cliffs in 10 minutes I wonder?
