Police are trying to locate Sebastian Rios, 2, and his mother, Yasemin Uyaf, 24. Both were last seen in Rahway on Friday around 9 a.m.

Police are looking for the boy's father, 27-year-old Tyler Rios of Highland Park, who is driving a silver four-door Ford Fiesta with the license plate S34NVH. He is approximately 5'9" and weighs around 220 pounds.

On Wednesday, the 24-year-old mother was packing up her apartment in Rahway and making arrangements to move later in the week, for what may have been the sixth time, said her mother Karen Uyar. The restraining order Yasemin Uyar had gotten more than a year ago against her son’s father, Tyler Rios, did not keep him from staying away, Karen Uyar said.

Rios’ erratic and violent behavior was escalating, said Karen Uyar, who said he had been previously arrested for violating the order.

Tyler Rios Charged With Murder After Missing Rahway Mother Yasemin Uyar Found Dead In Tennessee

A New Jersey man charged with kidnapping his son has now been charged with murder in the death of the boy’s mother.

He was initially charged with first-degree kidnapping, but is now charged with first-degree murder in her death. He remains in custody in Tennessee pending extradition to New Jersey.

After daughter's slaying, NJ mom is on a mission to help domestic violence victims

Karen Uyar is not quite ready to go through the belongings of her daughter Yasemin, two months after she was killed allegedly by an ex-boyfriend.

While her strength is focused on caring for Yazzi's 3-year-old son Sebastian, she is ready to mount a crusade to strengthen domestic violence laws.

Uyar has reached out to Assemblyman Sterley Stanley, D-Middlesex, to draft a Yasemin's Law to reform New Jersey's domestic violence laws.

"There has to be tougher laws for someone who commits domestic violence in front of a child. There has to be a stiffer penalty for that," she said.

N.J. man indicted in killing of ex-girlfriend, kidnapping of their child

A Union County grand jury has indicted a Highland Park man on charges that he murdered his ex-girlfriend and kidnapped their child in July.

The grand jury indicted Rios on first-degree charges of murder and kidnapping, along with counts of desecrating human remains, endangering the welfare of a child, contempt by violating a domestic violence restraining order and theft.

He was extradited to New Jersey on July 16 and remains in Essex County Jail pending an Oct. 12 post-indictment arraignment hearing.

Highland Park man may be nearing plea deal in ex-girlfriend's slaying, son's kidnapping

While a plea agreement is negotiated for a Highland Park man accused of killing his ex-girlfriend and kidnapping their toddler son last summer, an online petition with almost 17,000 signatures calls for the suspect to spend the rest of his life behind bars.

During a court appearance Monday, Nicholas Korman, attorney for Rios, told Union County Superior Court Judge John M. Deitch that he has made a plea offer to the Union County Prosecutor's Office.

"The front office of the prosecutor's office is reviewing a potential offer that I have discussed with Mr. Rios as a possibility that we don't know if it's actually going to be approved,” Korman said.

Korman said he understands the prosecutor's office is expected to respond to the offer by mid-February and then, if accepted, he would need a few weeks to discuss the offer with his client.

Union County Assistant Prosecutor Robert Grady said his office has asked for two weeks to complete the review.

Although the details of the offer were not disclosed during the court hearing, an update on the Change.org petition called "Justice for Yasemin Uyar" says Rios is looking at a 30-year prison term.

"Tyler Rios is currently facing the potential for a 30 year plea-bargain that is far too short for the lives destroyed and crimes committed in July of 2021. We would like for Tyler to spend the rest of his life behind bars so the opportunity to do more damage to Sebastian or his loved ones is never possible again," the petition says.

Highland Park man charged in ex-girlfriend's slaying expected to take plea deal

A Highland Park man charged with killing his ex-girlfriend and kidnapping their toddler last summer has begun serving a prison term for choking the boy’s mother in 2017.

Tyler Rios, 27, is serving the five-year sentence at Northern State Prison in Newark after being sentenced in January on aggravated assault and resisting arrest charges in the Nov. 30, 2017 incident.

Rios was not present for a Superior Court hearing here on Monday where his attorney, Nicholas Korman, told Judge John Deitch he received a plea offer from the Union County Prosecutor’s Office on Friday in the July killing of 24-year-old Rahway resident Yasemin Uyar and kidnapping of their then 2-year-old son Sebastian.

"I think it's likely that will resolve this case by way of a plea," Korman said.

The details of the plea offer were not disclosed, but a Change.org petition, which calls for Rios to spend the rest of his life behind bars, indicates he could be offered 30 years in prison.

Highland Park man admits killing ex-girlfriend with wrestling move

A Highland Park man admitted Monday to losing control of his emotions and killing his ex-girlfriend with a wrestling move by putting his forearm across her throat until she stopped breathing.

Tyler Rios pleaded guilty before Superior Court Judge John M. Deitch in Union County to aggravated manslaughter, a first-degree crime, in the killing of his former girlfriend Yasemin Uyar in 2021. He also pleaded guilty to desecration of human remains, a second-degree crime.

Rios faces 25 years in prison on the aggravated manslaughter charge and five more years on the desecration of human remains charge when he is sentenced in June, Union County Assistant Prosecutor Robert Grady said about the plea agreement.

The sentence will run concurrent to the five-year sentence he is serving at Northern State Prison for choking Uyar in 2017.

“It was really hard, you know what it was in your mind but to hear him say it and so matter of factly, there was no emotion to it, that’s hard, it’s really hard to hear,” she said.

While Karen Uyar believes Rios should spend the rest of his life in prison, she is satisfied that he will serve 30 years behind bars because that means her grandson, Sebastian, will be 33 years old when his father is released.

'Daddy choke Mommy': Highland Park man gets 30 years in ex-girlfriend’s killing

Tyler Rios was silent Friday as he was sentenced by Superior Court Judge John M. Deitch to 25 years in state prison for killing his ex-girlfriend, Yasemin Uyar, and five more years for the desecration of her remains.

And the Highland Park resident showed no expression when he heard about the struggles his young son faces after seeing his mother killed at his father’s hands.

Karen Uyar, Yasemin’s mother, told the judge that while her daughter gave her son, Sebastian, unconditional love and support, his father has given him “a lifetime of traumatic memories.”

She said the boy, now 3, saw "Daddy choke Mommy."

She said he remembers what happened and talks about it nearly every day.
