There is the death penalty in KY. Granted it's only been used 3 times since 1976. And the last execution was in 2008. You have the penalty. Use It! These two deserve It!

'I'm not going to stop, I'm going to keep pushing until justice is served': Father of 4-year-old Serenity McKinney speaks out

After an immeasurable loss, 4-year-old Serenity McKinney's father and grandparents say they are in mourning after the young girl was found dead Friday afternoon.

Her father David Roller sat looking through photos and videos of the young girl full of life. "I was actually in Owensboro for this one, this is when she was a newborn," he said.

David replayed his favorite moments with Serenity over and over. He said she had a mean mug that was the cutest thing he'd ever seen, and when he was with her, she'd never let go of his hand.

"You could tell there was a heck of a future ahead of her, just breathtaking,” he said.

The memories are what he and her grandmas are now left with. "There isn’t just one favorite memory, they’re all my favorite memories," said Melody Roller, Serenity's grandma.

"Not only did she get robbed of her life, but I got robbed of my chance to be an actual dad," said David who had been trying to get his life back on track for his daughter. "I wish I could have been there more.”

Aundria said how thankful the family is to the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office and the agencies that found her. "And the community and love and support is overwhelming,” she said

David and the rest of the family are now mourning their insurmountable loss, knowing this is not the end.

"I’m not going to stop, I’m going to keep pushing until justice is served,” he said.

The family said they are grateful for the support they've received from the community and is inviting everyone to a vigil and balloon release for Serenity this Sunday at 2 p.m. at Clear Creek Park in Shelbyville.

Serenity's mother, Catherine McKinney, and McKinney's boyfriend, Dakota Hill, are charged with murder and abuse of a corpse in Serenity's death. A judge has set their bonds at $1 million.

'We know you're home': Dad of Serenity McKinney says he won't feel closure until everyone is held accountable in her death

Dozens packed Clear Creek Park in Shelby County Sunday to honor Serenity McKinney, the 4-year-old girl whose disappearance and death made national headlines.

The words some couldn't find to speak, they wrote on balloons and let go.

DJ wrote, "Baby girl we know you're home, and I can't wait to see you again." He kissed it twice and let it go.

While he said it brought a bit of closure, he said, "I won't have my closure until everybody is fully held accountable that had a part in this."

For him, that includes more than Serenity's mother and her boyfriend who are both charged with murder.

As a father, he's thought through how things could have gone differently, what actions could have kept his 4-year-old alive. He said that CPS could have down more.

"The job description is right there in the damn name, Child Protective Services, he said.

There were two requests for police to lay eyes on Serenity. However, with these recordings, police redacted much of the conversation with white noise.

Officials waiting on DNA results as family plans funeral for 4-year-old Serenity McKinney

A family continues waiting for many answers after first opening a missing persons case earlier this year.

Roller said family members have planned a funeral service for Serenity, but a date won't be set until remains are back from the medical examiner.

Bullitt County Coroner David Billings said the hold up is DNA, making sure to positively identify the remains.

"We have to positively identify the remains that were found here in Bullitt County and we do that by DNA testing that's done by the state crime lab," Billings said.

According to Billings, the first DNA sample did not provide enough viable DNA to complete testing, so another sample was taken about three weeks ago and results are not back yet.

"I'm sure this is a very horrible time for the family and they would like to put some closure to this but they also understand the importance of me making a positive identification," he said.

Finally official.

Bullitt County Coroner identifies Serenity McKinney's body

Bullitt County Coroner officially identified Serenity McKinney’s body Friday.

This has been a nearly 6-month long wait for the little four-year-old’s grandmother, father and other loved ones.

She was found in February near the Jefferson-Bullitt County line.

The Kentucky State Medical Examiner’s Office is in charge of determining the cause of death, which hasn't been released yet.

Serenity’s mother and her mother’s boyfriend have been charged in connection with her death and hiding her body.

Serenity’s family is holding a birthday party for her on Aug. 9.

Serenity’s grandmother, Melody Roller, said they are doing a pinwheel event at Clear Creek Park in Shelbyville, which is the same place they did her balloon release.

People are invited to come and bring a pinwheel and ask people to be there between 5:30 p.m. and 6 p.m.

'I don’t want a plea deal': Family wants suspects in 4-year-old Kentucky girl's death to face trial

The suspects charged in the disappearance and death of a young Shelby County girl were back in front of a judge Monday, with the family watching in the courtroom.

Four-year-old Serenity McKinney’s mother, Catherine “Abby” McKinney and her boyfriend Dakota Hill, have been charged with murder and abuse of a corpse.

During the pre-trial conference, the judge asked both the prosecution and defense if they are both still on track for a trial on Jan. 31, 2023.

Attorneys said while they're still waiting on some DNA evidence from Kentucky State Police lab reports, the answer for now is yes. They say they have the majority of evidence they need to proceed.

McKinney and Hill have been behind bars at the Bullitt County Jail for months and seemed to be cooperative during the conference.

However, the judge reminded defense attorneys and suspects if they intend on negotiating a potential plea agreement, the next couple of months would be that time.

The next hearing is scheduled to take place Jan. 30, a day before the trial.

After Monday’s hearing, Melody Roller who is Serenity’s paternal grandmother, said their family is praying this case goes in front of a jury.

“I’m battling on forgiveness with them both, and I realize that I’m not ready to forgive yet,” she said. “I don’t want a plea deal. I want this to go before 12 people. I want the justice system to work in the proper way. The longer they're in jail, the less likely it is they can hurt another child."

For the murder charges, McKinney and Hill both face anywhere from 20 to 50 years in prison or a life sentence if convicted.

An effort to consolidate their cases was remanded, meaning they will continue to be tried separately.

Missing 4-year-old girl’s remains were found wrapped in plastic inside suitcase

A coroner's report reveals the gruesome findings of a months-long investigation into a 4-year-old's murder.

According to the document WHAS11 obtained through an Open Records Request, Serenity McKinney’s skeletal remains were found wrapped in plastic, inside a green suitcase.

The autopsy also found fractures in both her arms and legs, but no definitive evidence of "lethal trauma."

The Bullitt County Coroner’s Office noted the suitcase was also filled with a sand-like substance and a toxicology report found no evidence of drugs or alcohol in her system.

According to the report, while Serenity's cause of death is undetermined, “the circumstances under which the body was found...indicate a homicidal manner of death.”

Fractures in both her arms and legs is enough for me. Life sentence. Or death sentence.

And then put in a suitcase.

ENOUGH for me. Fry them. Sorry but I am how old and don't have fractures nor have I had to my knowledge in both my arms and legs. Doesn't just "happen". She is FOUR years old. Or was :(

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The case of a four-year-old Kentucky girl killed and whose body was left in the woods has been pushed back.

According to Bullitt Commonwealth’s Attorney Bailey Taylor, he told WHAS11 News his office is still waiting on additional evidence and that the defense counsel is looking to secure experts regarding the case.

Taylor said he believes he will be able to bring justice for McKinney’s family.

This case, is one that I think, based on the evidence we have, I would of course, like to try it and resolve it sooner than later. But I don't think an additional few months is going to affect the ability of us to present a strong case,” he said.

Taylor also revealed he is waiting for evidence from the scene to come back from the lab hoping to find a DNA match.

"David replayed his favorite moments with Serenity over and over. He said she had a mean mug that was the cutest thing he'd ever seen, and when he was with her, she'd never let go of his hand."
I love that.

I haven’t kept up with this case like others. I remember it. It's so sickening. Someone killing a child is horrific enough. But I will never understand a child's own parent killing them. You shouldn't have had them then. You can bet with a parent/parents like that, The child never had happiness their whole life.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A four-year-old girl who was found dead in a forest near southern Jefferson County was remembered on Saturday.

Serenity McKinney was reported missing to the Shelby County Sheriff's Office by her maternal grandfather in February 2022. Family members said they hadn't seen the child in more than a year.

On Saturday, family and friends placed a large cross where her body was found in McKinney's honor. It was the first time many family members had been to the scene.

"Her being memorialized right here by this cross, and like I said, her story has been affecting a lot of people in a good way," said David Roller, Serenity's father.

Serenity's mother, Catherine McKinney, and her mother's boyfriend, Dakota Hill, were both charged with murder and abuse of a corpse. They remain in the Bullitt County Jail. A trial is scheduled to begin in June 2023.
