Classification: Endangered Missing
Date Of Birth: May 9, 1962
Age: 34 years old
Height and Weight: 5'5, 115 pounds
Distinguishing Characteristics: Blonde hair, blue eyes. Holland has a scar on her left arm. Her ears are pierced. Holland had cosmetic facial surgery in 1995. Some agencies may refer to her as Vanessa Sherri Holland.

Details of Disappearance

Holland resided on Peachtree Battle Avenue in Atlanta, Georgia in 1996. She also owned a vacation home in Flager Beach, Florida at the time. Holland was planning to return to Atlanta from her Florida residence on August 16, 1996. She was last seen between 11:30 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. as she departed from her Flager Beach home. Holland never arrived in Georgia as scheduled and has not been heard from again.
Holland's gold 1987 BMW 325I with Georgia license plates numbered BKT664 was found abandoned on August 25, 1996, eight days after she was last seen. The car was located on the northbound side of Interstate 75 in Morrow, Georgia, just south of Highway 54. The vehicle had a flat tire and was parked near Exit 76 between Macon, Georgia and Atlanta.

Holland's sisters filed a missing person's report in Georgia shortly after she failed to return home. Authorities checked her residence and noted that there were few personal belongings inside the house. Holland's sisters and her boyfriend had keys to her Georgia home in 1996; all of them stated that they did not enter the residence after Holland's disappearance.

Holland's dog, Gracie, was seen walking near the Stratford Arms apartment complex in Riverdale, Georgia between August 18 and August 26, 1996. Several witnesses told authorities that Gracie had periodically walked along Valley Hill Road and Upper Riverdale Road during that time. One of the complex's residents said that Gracie attempted to lead him towards a wooded area across the street from the apartments. Investigators searched the location, but no evidence pertaining to Holland's case was discovered.

Authorities received an anonymous tip that Holland was seen near her BMW on Interstate 75 on the day she disappeared. The informant claimed that Holland was loading luggage into a white pickup truck at the time. Investigators searched the area where her car was abandoned, but no evidence was located. The sighting has never been confirmed.

Holland operated an escort service in 1996. Authorities interviewed her business partner after Holland vanished. Her associate stated that the service had been in existence since 1992. The individual told investigators that he believed Holland had been murdered as the result of her business ventures. Authorities noted that her partner spoke of her in the past tense during their interview. The individual said that Holland had made several enemies in the past. Holland allegedly placed hidden video cameras around the escort service's property. She reportedly recorded her employees and clients in compromising situations, then used the materials to blackmail the individuals. Holland's partner said that he heard several people discuss murdering Holland prior to her disappearance.

Holland had been involved with her married boyfriend since 1989. He told authorities that he separated from his wife briefly in 1990, but they had since reconciled. Holland and her boyfriend had apparently planned to marry by December 1996, but he was having second thoughts at the time of her disappearance and remained married to his wife. Holland's boyfriend told investigators that he and Holland argued about the state of their relationship before she left for her Flager Beach home in August 1996. She left her residence in Georgia while the matter was still unresolved. Her boyfriend stated that Holland paged him at approximately 11:30 a.m. on the day she disappeared. He called her back and she said she would phone him after she arrived in Atlanta. Holland's boyfriend said that he never heard from her again. He also said that he did not believe his wife was aware of their affair in 1996.

Several of Holland's friends told authorities that she was depressed over her relationship and was tiring of the escort business in August 1996. Holland reportedly mentioned traveling to Europe to escape the situation. A source came forward with a recorded phone converation between one of Holland's sisters and an unidentified person in September 1996. Her sister said that it was possible that Holland went abroad and essentially staged her own disappearance during the conversation.

Authorities do not know if Holland left of her own accord or if other circumstances were involved in her case. Holland's disappearance remains unsolved.

I remember Sherri very well. She was beautiful, sweet and had a very sophisticated aire. I love this picture of her and Gracie (when she was a puppy). I worked for her for four years, but mostly knew her through her "business partner." The whole time I worked there, she had very little to do with the business and was out of town a lot of the time.

I told the GBI everything that I knew about her and her disappearance, including the fact that Jim had acted extremely nervous and sketchy during the days following her disappearance. I don't believe for one second that she was using video to blackmail her employees or their clients. If anyone did that, it was Jim. He had a whole suspicious backstory of who he was and where he came from. I'm fairly sure his name wasn't Jim, either.

When he told me about her disappearance, he said she probably just wanted to leave town to get away from her life, and also, to make her boyfriend worry about her. It was well known that she was devasted about their relationship problems.

I never trusted anything about Jim. He would say terrible things about her, but at the same time, pretty much lived on her dime and the business she had started. It wouldn't surprise me at all if he finally decided to "take" the business all for himself. It was very profitable, and being that it was all under the table, he probably figured no one would take much notice.

I look online year after year to see if anything has come of the case. She was (hopefully IS) such a vibrant person. She positively radiated with life. I hope she IS living in Europe and is finally happy. God bless you Sherri

There were unconfirmed reports that Sherri had been blackmailing a few suburban Atlanta policemen in connection to her escort business. Her disappearance may have been a type of punishment. Sherri had a dangerous lifestyle.

Circumstances of Disappearance
Holland was last seen at 11:30 a.m. in Flagler Beach, Florida on August 16, 1996, when she and her two dogs left her vacation home in Flagler Beach, Florida, preparing to return to her house on Peachtree Battle Avenue in northwest Atlanta.

Her car, a Champagne Gold, 1987 BMW 325i, GA Tag - BKT664, was found August 24, 1996 abandoned on the northbound side of I-75 just south of Highway 54 in Morrow, Georgia just South of highway 54 near exit 76 between Macon, Georgia and Atlanta, Georgia. The car had nail in the right front tire, that was flat. Her dogs were found at a Riverdale apartment complex two miles away. The mixed breed had been killed in traffic, and the other pet was returned to Holland’s sister. Holland’s twin sister called Flagler Beach police a few days later because her sister never made contact with her.

Investigators say Holland, who owned a vacation home in Flagler Beach, may have been abducted anywhere between Flagler Beach and Atlanta. They described her as an adult entertainer who may have been involved in prostitution. Her photo was in a provocative advertisement in a magazine sold in Atlanta strip clubs and adult stores. Neighbors described Holland as very private and very pretty. She rarely had visitors and kept to herself.

Sherri briefly attended Southern Polytechnic University after high school before joining the Army where she was a sharpshooter on an elite rifle team at Fort Benning before receiving an honorable discharge. After that she worked with ReMax as a real estate agent before venturing into the adult entertainment business.

Sherri's BMW appeared on a video the night she disappeared as a state trooper stopped another driver for a DUI.

There were sightings of Sherri after her disappearance, Sherri's sister is convinced of a report of a woman fitting her description was seen with a man entering a 1980's Oldsmobile the night of her disappearance. The two were seen leaving the Quik Trip on Upper Riverdale road the woman tried to make eye contact with the man and he told police it didn't look right.

Police say they have new lead in woman's 1996 disappearance

By Mark Winne, Local | WSBTV

CLAYTON COUNTY, GA. —
In August 1996, Sherri Vanessa Holland disappeared on her way back home to Atlanta from her Florida vacation home.

Her BMW was found abandoned by authorities eight days later.

Channel 2 Investigative Reporter Mark Winne has been covering this story since the disappearance and, on Tuesday, he spoke with authorities about a major break in the case.

Chief James Callaway of the Morrow Police Department, said a tipster has provided the hottest lead in the case in 20 years.

"It’s our hope and it’s my personal prayer that we do find Sherri Holland out there in the woods tomorrow to bring some closure to this family," Callaway said.

Callaway said the anonymous tip leads him to believe Holland's remains were found abandoned beside I-75 in August of 1996, along with a flat tire.

In an interview with Winne, Callaway showed him the nail in the tire.

Holland's remains may repose be in a patch of woods that Morrow police plan to search on Wednesday with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Clayton County Sheriff's Office deputies and four cadaver dogs from South Carolina.

"The tipster has said that there were some items found that were purported to be Sherri Vanessa Holland's personal effects," Callaway said.

Callaway said Holland's dogs turned up miles from her car and he's personally corroborated the new tip. He said the car contained a loaded gun, more than $2,400 in cash, a purse but no wallet, and no suitcases.

Although she had just departed from Flagler Beach, Florida, where she had a second home, she was headed north toward Atlanta, where she had a house in Buckhead.

Callaway said Holland ran an escort business and her underground lifestyle made it difficult to ferret out
information.

"It's like this person just vanished off the face of the planet. Whatever her profession was, it's incumbent upon us as a law enforcement agency to seek justice," he said.

GBI Director of Internal Affairs Fred Mays said the case took him from Atlanta to Flagler Beach to Tennessee and involved dozens of interviews and several searches when he was a case agent in 1996.

"Foul play is most certainly suspected in this case," Callaway said.

New tip could lead to remains of woman missing more than 20 years

By Raisa Habersham, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

It’s been 22 years since Sherri Vanessa Holland was last seen hopping into her 1985 BMW at her Flagler Beach, Fla., vacation home with her two dogs, Gracie and Bear.

At the time, she was headed to Atlanta after getting the call she’d been “waiting for,” authorities said. But she never made it.

An anonymous tip has reinvigorated the search for Holland, prompting the Morrow Police Department to search an undisclosed wooded area for the woman’s remains Wednesday, police Chief James Callaway said in an exclusive interview with Channel 2 Action News.

The GBI, Clayton County Sheriff’s Office and four cadaver dogs from South Carolina will also join the search.

Holland, 34, disappeared Aug. 16, 1996. Her car, which had a flat tire, was found a week later on I-75 North just south of the Morrow exit. A week after that, her dogs were found at a Clayton County apartment complex.

“It’s our hope and it’s my personal prayer that we do find Sherri Holland out there in the woods (Wednesday) to bring some closure to (her) family,” Callaway said.

At the time, authorities were flooded with at least 100 tips that went nowhere.

But the latest information — an electronic tip Callaway said he personally vetted — indicated Holland’s personal items were found. Callaway confirmed foul play is suspected.

Scant details were offered by authorities during an interview with The Atlanta Journal-Constitution a year after Holland’s disappearance. Her telephone records were collected by the GBI, but details were not released.

Authorities searched her Peachtree Battle Avenue home but never said what they found. And police interviews didn’t reveal a possible motive.

During Tuesday’s interview with Channel 2, Callaway revealed some details about the contents of Holland’s car — a loaded gun, $2,400 and a purse. Oddly, no wallet or suitcase were found in the car.

“It’s like this person just vanished off the face of the planet,” he said.

At the time, Terri Holland thought her twin sister was kidnapped after a possible sighting by a tipster. According to the tip, a woman fitting Sherri Holland’s description was seen with a man entering a mid-1980s dented and faded blue Oldsmobile the night of the disappearance, The AJC previously reported.

A driver saw the two leaving a QuikTrip on Upper Riverdale Road, which is less than three miles from the Morrow exit where Holland’s car was found.

But in the years since, there’s been no concrete leads.

Holland also ran an escort business, but officials have not said if that was connected to her disappearance. Regardless of “her profession, it’s incumbent upon us as a law enforcement agency to seek justice,” Callaway said.

Another woman named Sherri Holland was murdered in Georgia in 2001. Her killer, Steven Spears, was executed in 2016.

— The AJC’s archives were used to report this story.
