Florida mother still missing after suspected abductor found dead, 9-year-old girl found alive: Police

A 9-year-old Tampa girl has been safely located, but her mother is still missing after their suspected abductor was found dead early Monday morning.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement issued an AMBER Alert for 9-year-old Briana Pagan around 1 a.m. on Monday and canceled it about an hour later when the child was safely located.

The alert was issued after the pair vanished from the 10400 block of Altman Street in Tampa around 10 a.m. on Sunday.

At that time, officials believed the child was with 34-year-old Sylvia Pagan and person-of-interest Jovanni Caceres Steffani.

Police say Steffani was found with a self-inflicted gunshot wound in Suwannee County shortly before 2 a.m. on Monday.

Briana was also found in Suwannee County, but Sylvia Pagan has not been located.

Police say they are "deeply concerned" about her well-being.

Tampa police ‘deeply concerned’ for missing woman after Amber Alert canceled

A missing girl last seen in Tampa who was the subject of an Amber Alert early Monday morning was found safe in north Florida less than two hours after her disappearance.

Law enforcement officials were still searching on Monday afternoon for a woman who was included in the alert and they are “deeply concerned for her overall well-being,” according to a news release from Tampa police.

At about 1 a.m., the Florida Department of Law Enforcement issued an Amber Alert for 9-year-old Briana Pagan and Sylvia Pagan, 34.

Authorities identified Jovanni Caceres Steffani, 38, as a person of interest — he is listed as Briana’s abductor in a missing persons poster circulated by the state law enforcement agency.

Steffani was found dead in Suwannee County just before 2 a.m. with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

In collaboration with other agencies, Suwannee County deputies found Briana unharmed and canceled the Amber alert about 2:30 a.m.

Tampa police did not immediately answer questions about how the two adults and young girl were related, citing an open investigation.

“As detectives diligently work to locate Sylvia Pagan, we are deeply concerned for her overall well-being,” according to the updated news release from Tampa police, which was sent out just before noon.

Sylvia Pagan was last seen about 10 a.m. Sunday in the 10400 block of Altman Street near Busch Gardens.

Statewide search for missing Tampa mother, Sylvia Pagan, enters third day

Tampa police officers said they are very concerned about the well-being of Sylvia Pagan. They are entering the third day of trying to find her.

“We’re working closely with the FBI and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement to use any sort of investigative means that we can to locate Sylvia with our ultimate goal to bring Sylvia home safely,” said Major Patrick Messmer, Commander of Tampa Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division.

Police believe Pagan was with her partner Jovanni Caceres Steffani before she vanished on Mother’s Day.

“So we’re asking anybody who might have seen Sylvia or Jovanni Saturday night into Sunday morning to please call the Tampa Police Department,” Messmer said.

Police believe the couple likely left Pagan’s home on Altman Street, near the University of South Florida in Tampa, in a white Ford F-150 on Sunday around 10 a.m.

Eight hours later, police got the call that Pagan and her 9-year-old daughter Briana were missing.

The search was on, and police quickly started to pinpoint Caceres as an abductor.

“That investigation also led us to believe that both individuals were in danger.”

FDLE issued an Amber Alert for Briana Pagan around 1 a.m. Monday morning.

About an hour later, the Suwannee County Sheriff’s Office rescued Pagan’s daughter from a hotel in the county.

“Briana was recovered unharmed and at that point, the Suwannee County Sheriff’s deputies began negotiations with Jovanni in order to try and take him into custody,” said the TPD investigator.

Caceres reportedly took his own life at the hotel after releasing Briana Pagan to deputies.

Police said the daughter didn’t know what happened to her 34-year-old mother.

Missing Florida mother’s body believed to be found in Wimauma after suspected abductor found dead: TPD

Authorities believe they've found the body of a Tampa mother who was still missing after her suspected abductor was found dead earlier this week.

The Tampa Police Department said they found a body in Wimauma on Wednesday believed to be Sylvia Pagan's with the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office's assistance. The Medical Examiner's Office is now working to confirm that it is Pagan as well as the official cause of death, officers said.

"This is not the outcome anyone wanted," said Tampa Police Chief Lee Bercaw. "We send our condolences to Sylvia's loved ones, but most importantly her daughter Briana during this unimaginable loss."

The body of a missing mother was located in Wimauma on Wednesday, according to her family.

Pagan’s family confirmed her death in a GoFundMe post. They’re looking to raise funds to help her family “plan a funeral [they] never thought [they] would have to plan.”

“My Nieces and Nephews have experienced a trauma that no child should have to experience, the loss of their mother. My Sister was the SOLE provider for her household and with her loss it left us to pick up the pieces. She left behind 4 children and now not only do we have to plan a funeral we never thought we would have to plan but we have to take care of my nieces and nephews,” the GoFundMe description read.

Investigators said 38-year-old Jovanni Caceres Steffani was the only person of interest in the case, but he took his own life. No one else is believed to be involved.
