ONGOING CRIME BREAKING NEWS!

Starting in January 2020, this thread is about the news as it breaks!

Bernard Madoff says he is dying and is asking a judge for compassionate release from prison, where he is serving 150 years for orchestrating the largest Ponzi scheme in history, according to a Wednesday federal court filing.

Madoff, 81, has terminal kidney failure and a life expectancy of less than 18 months. When the court sentenced him, “it was clear that Madoff’s 150-year prison sentence was symbolic for three reasons: retribution, deterrence, and for the victims,” the court filing states. “This Court must now consider whether keeping Madoff incarcerated … is truly in furtherance of statutory sentencing goals and our society’s value and understanding of compassion.”

Madoff said in the request for compassionate release that he “does not dispute the severity of his crimes.”

Don't do the crime if you're too fragile to do the time. Suck it up, buttercup

He had his years or so he thought of benefiting from what he did, he can now take the time for it regardless of his health, condition or circumstances. I agree, deal with it Buttercup. He considered no effect his actions had on others and he deserves no such consideration. Imo.

Canadian Parole Board Releases Murderer To Meet 'Sexual Needs;' He Kills Again

Montreal, CANADA – Authorities are blaming inexperience for a parole board’s decision to grant early release to a convicted killer who later murdered a 22-year-old prostitute.
Eustachio Gallese, 51, had a history of domestic violence and was sentenced to life in prison for the murder of his wife in 2006, CTV News reported.
Gallese was also convicted of sexual assault against a romantic partner in 1997. Police said he beat his wife, 32-year-old Chantal Deschênes, with a hammer before stabbing her to death with two knives on Oct. 21, 2004. He was convicted of murder and sentenced to life without parole for 15 years, the Daily Mail reported.
In 2007, the parole board determined that Gallese was at “high risk” of violently re-offending violence. However, the board lowered his status to “moderate” chance of re-offending in 2016, and dropped it to “low to moderate” in 2019, the Daily Mail reported.

Then in March of 2019, Gallese was granted supervised release on day parole at a halfway house based on his good behavior.
According to parole board records, Gallese discussed with case workers his concerns about having relationships with women, and the case workers encouraged him to go ahead and satisfy his “sexual needs.”
“Although you are still single and you say you aren’t ready to enter into a serious relationship with a woman, you are able to efficiently evaluate your needs and expectations towards women,” the parole board’s most recent decision said, according to Vice.
“During the hearing, your parole officer underlined a strategy that was developed with the goal that would allow you to meet women in order to meet your sexual needs,” the decision continued. “The hearing allowed us to realize you managed, and this with the approval of your case-management team, relations with women that the board considers inappropriate.”

So, with permission from the parole board, Gallese availed himself of the services of prostitutes at a Montreal erotic massage parlor while he was on parole, the Daily Mail reported.
He got banned from the massage parlor after he was violent with some of the women there, but 22-year-old Marylène Lévesque made arrangements to continue to service Gallese outside the business.
Lévesque met Gallese for sex in a Sainte-Foy district hotel room and he stabbed her to death, the Daily Mail reported.
Gallese turned himself in to authorities on Jan. 22 and has been charged with second-degree murder.
Lévesque’s murder has raised questions about why the Canadian parole board would have granted such a permission to seek sexual satisfaction to a killer, the Montreal Gazette reported.
Former parole board members blamed the inexperience of the current parole board.
“If you don’t have experienced board members and just new people, some mistakes can happen, some issues can happen,” ex-parole board member Dave Blackburn told the Montreal Gazette. “And in this file, with Gallese, I see lack of experience.”

Another former parole board member, Jean-Claude Boyer, said anyone with experience would have revoked Gallese’s parole when they learned a case worker had given him permission to visit sex workers, an act which is criminal in and of itself, the Montreal Gazette reported.
Boyer, who served on the parole board until 2018, noted that records showed that board members had called it “worrying and significant risk factor,” but didn’t stop Gallese from visiting prostitutes.
“The board members were made aware of this at the hearing and they said, ’That’s inappropriate,’ and they wrote, ’Risk is getting important,’ and they did not act,” he told the Montreal Gazette. “What they had to do was immediately revoke his freedom to have a hearing within three months to figure out what happened.”

What an outrageous story and another woman had to die for a parole board encouraging him to meet his sexual needs with prostitutes?? I thought our country was messed up. To be given 15 years to begin with for murdering his wife with a hammer and knives is outrageous!

I thought our laws and sentences were soft at times, boy Canada has its issues too.

I wonder who paid for the prostitutes? Smh.

I agree with you! Why change these kind of laws unless you know why they were made in the first place? This is why history repeats itself, because people make the same mistakes over and over.

It said what the caseworker did by granting permission to visit sex workers (almost sounded like encouraging to me) is a crime in and of itself. I wonder if charges will be brought?? I doubt it somehow.

I agree, which change the laws and murder is one to begin with that deserves a far more serious sentence than 15 years imo.

Man convicted in a Cedar Rapids fatal shooting now is charged in Arkansas slaying
Fights extradition to Little Rock, demands governor's warrant
<snip>
CEDAR RAPIDS — A former Fairfax man, who was convicted of lesser charges in a 2008 fatal shooting in Cedar Rapids, declined Monday to waive extradition to Arkansas, where he faces charges in a 2018 fatal shooting — only a year after being paroled in the Iowa case.

Jacovan D. Bush, 31, charged in Arkansas with capital murder and aggravated robbery, is demanding a governor’s warrant, which means the Arkansas governor will have to ask Gov. Kim Reynolds to extradite Bush to Little Rock. <snip>
Bush was sentenced to prison in 2010 for voluntary manslaughter, intimidation with a dangerous weapon and going armed with intent in the fatal shooting of Thomas Horvath, 19, on April 15, 2008. Horvath was shot in the abdomen and head. He died the next day.

Bush, who pleaded to amended charges after his first-degree murder conviction was overturned on appeal, became eligible for parole after serving four years in prison and was released on parole in February 2017. He completed his parole Aug. 28 of last year. <snip>
Bush was convicted by a jury for first-degree murder in November 2008, but he was granted an appeal in 2012 and was granted a new trial based on inadmissible evidence. The prosecution called three witnesses at trial who identified Bush as the shooter in statements to police after the incident, but they recanted those statements before trial. <snip>

So the man in this story is an illegal immigrant and he has seven felony convictions in other states. This is not a political comment but I will say just why was he here and free to commit murder after all of that criminal behavior in so many different states and with an illegal status?

KINGSTON, Mass. (AP) — More than 30 people were taken to hospitals Friday after a hazardous materials team responded to reports of a odor in a classroom at a Massachusetts high school.
The odor at Silver Lake Regional High School in Kingston was reported at about 10:15 a.m., Kingston public schools Superintendent Jill Proulx said at a news conference outside the school.

The school was evacuated out of “an abundance of caution” and 34 students and staff were taken to area hospitals, she said.
Kingston Fire Chief Mark Douglass said the injuries were mostly dizziness and throat irritation, possibly from some type of chemical release.
The source of the odor remains under investigation.
The hazmat team recommended that the school's HVAC system be shut down.

Four rare mountain gorillas 'die in Uganda lightning strike'

  • 8 February 2020

Four rare mountain gorillas, including a pregnant female, have died in Uganda after being hit by lightning, a conservation group says.

The three adult females and a male infant were found in Uganda's Mgahinga National Park with "gross lesions" on their bodies indicating electrocution.

The Greater Virunga Transboundary Collaboration (GVTC) called this a "big loss for the species".

There are just over 1,000 mountain gorillas in existence.

The species is restricted to protected areas in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda and Uganda.

The four that died were part of a 17-member group, which has been called the Hirwa family by the authorities.

The Hirwa group had crossed the border from Rwanda into Uganda last year and had been living in Uganda's Mgahinga National Park.

Mgahinga is in the Virunga Massif range of mountains which straddle the borders of Uganda, Rwanda and DR Congo.

"This was extremely sad," Andrew Seguya, executive secretary of the GVTC, told the BBC.

"The potential of the three females for their contribution to the population was immense," Dr Seguya said.

He added that the 13 surviving members of the Hirwa family have been found and are feeding wel

'She Would Not Stop Laughing at Me': Utah Man Pleads Guilty to Murdering Wife Aboard Cruise Ship Off Alaskan Coast
By Asher Stockler On 2/8/20 at 1:23 PM EST

A Utah man pleaded guilty on Friday to charges of murder in the second degree for killing his wife in 2017 aboard the Emerald Princess cruise ship in waters outside Southeast Alaska.

Kenneth Ray Manzanares, 42, was arrested in July 2017 after reports of a murder had been phoned in by corporate security to the FBI. He was formally charged the following month with murder in the first degree before being allowed to plead to the lesser charge, which carries with it a potential penalty of life imprisonment.

A lawyer for Manzanares did not return a request for comment. Neither did a representative for Princess Cruises, which charters the Emerald Princess.

Peter Brust, the security director for the corporate owner of the Emerald Princess, told the FBI that on July 25, security personnel were called to respond to an incident in cabin D726, which was registered to Manzanares and his wife Kristy.

Before they arrived, other witnesses reported entering the room and encountering Manzanares, who had blood on his hands and clothing. They also found Kristy lying on the floor in a pool of blood. When asked about what had happened, one of the witnesses said that Manzanares replied: "She would not stop laughing at me."

One of these witnesses said that Manzanares attempted to drag his wife's body towards the balcony of their cabin, turning into a small scuffle when the witness grabbed her ankles and pulled Kristy back into the cabin.

After security arrived, they placed Manzanares into handcuffs and secured him to the adjacent cabin. Kristy was assessed by medical personnel, who discovered a "severe" head wound. Blood was also seen on "multiple surfaces" throughout the room.

During processing for evidence by the FBI, Manzanares is said to have spontaneously uttered: "My life is over."

Manzanares had been traveling on the cruise ship with his wife and two children-- one a 22-year-old daughter and the other a minor. At around 8:50 p.m., the night of her murder, Kristy and her husband had been arguing about his behavior that evening, according to the plea agreement. Kristy told him that she wanted a divorce, ordering him to debark at Juneau, the ship's next port of call.

Manzanares then instructed both children to go into the adjoining room, which was occupied by relatives. "A few minutes later," the plea recounts, both children heard their mother scream from the next cabin. Manzanares told them: "Don't come in here."

Accessing a balcony connecting the two cabins, the children witnessed their father punching their mother, who was lying on the floor, repeatedly.

"The vast majority have a safe experience that provides a lifetime of memories," Bryan Schroder, the U.S. attorney for the District of Alaska, said in a press release. "However, on those rare occasions where a crime is committed on a visitor, especially a brutal crime like the murder of Kristy Manzanares, rest assured the Alaskan law enforcement community will act to bring the perpetrator to justice. Our hearts go out to the family and those close to Kristy Manzanares."
