ONGOING CRIME BREAKING NEWS!

Starting in January 2020, this thread is about the news as it breaks!

Bernard Madoff says he is dying and is asking a judge for compassionate release from prison, where he is serving 150 years for orchestrating the largest Ponzi scheme in history, according to a Wednesday federal court filing.

Madoff, 81, has terminal kidney failure and a life expectancy of less than 18 months. When the court sentenced him, “it was clear that Madoff’s 150-year prison sentence was symbolic for three reasons: retribution, deterrence, and for the victims,” the court filing states. “This Court must now consider whether keeping Madoff incarcerated … is truly in furtherance of statutory sentencing goals and our society’s value and understanding of compassion.”

Madoff said in the request for compassionate release that he “does not dispute the severity of his crimes.”

IMO- stay in jail

Smdh. It is pretty sad when I even had the thought well this one took himself and the dog and maybe believes they are all together, the entire family, and somewhere better than this crazy world...

I'll never understand the rationalization behind these family killings... They seem to think that the rest of the family can't live without them, but of course they can. Maybe it's more that they SHOULDN'T live without them. Bloody narcissists.

Why would they do this or why the charges?

This reminds me of one years ago in Madison, Wisconsin. She let them worry, we all worried that heard of it, and turn the area upside down looking for her and spend a small fortune. What is it, attention seeking? A way of getting back at a parent? Maybe they were told "no" so well, let's just worry ma and pa for saying no to me...?

No idea but there seems to be a small rash of such things lately... Sounds like even her own family or some say it was for attention... In a day and age that negative publicity gets your name known who knows... This girl though was not 18, she is 23 AND the FBI got involved in her disappearance... No small joke. Here is one recap... She did get her name known but not, I would say, in any positive light...

She also said a black man abducted her (nice huh?) and contacted her parents and worried them to no end...

The jury ruled Washington state was negligent when it was supposed to protect the two young boys during a supervised visit with their father, Josh Powell. The state will have to pay Chuck and Judy Cox, the grandparents of the boys, $98 million.

Wow. While nothing can fix what happened, and never can, that is one VERY significant judgment which speaks for itself I guess...

Tragic and all sorts of crazy. Gated community. Perp seemed not to know family. Crashed through gates. Did all of this. Two deaths, grandma critical, more... Perp drinks bleach... Sometimes I think of going somewhere warm and then I think I will just stay put where we have our not fancy residences and where all of these crazy news headlines seem like they come from another planet...

Gee is it next door the Church of Scientology... Sounds like they could give them a run for their money in being not a church I would want any part of... How do these places get this big? It is beyond disturbring... I am surprised I never heard of this one before... Sounds like it is hardly new...

Oh boy... Wrong type of plate, wrong state and it wasn't a motorcycle... Had it been the correct one, and the correct stop, I still would think this was bad but maybe a bit more understandable but still bad. How can they screw up a motorcycle plate from another state on an SUV in their own state? I wonder though if there is more to this story. Why did they do a read on the plate to begin with?? Unless it was one of those automatic readers installed in some towns and that somehow matched it up, which again would be a huge mistake in the system (but I have heard of that happening) with that type of system, the software and more.

In most states the plates are clearly labeled as motorcycle, truck, trailer, passenger car, so this should have been obvious. I'm just not sure it if was a lazy dispatcher or lazy officer.

True. That's my point too. Someone was not looking at details. I do know of someone though who got an "automatic" ticket in the mail from a system... In another state. And the people who ran the system, not LE, apparently did not know the other state and how their plates work. The person owned a car but the picture providing the traffic violation showed a commercial truck with the same numbered plate. Now these two vehicles would have been from the same state and the company or automatic system was apparently unaware in that state you can have duplicate numbers but on different types of plates. It was a mess to get straightened out and the person had never even been in that state to get the ticket. What I mean is say Joe Schmoe has a car in say your state but your state also gives that same license plate number to someone with a say Speedee delivery truck on their plate which this state did do only on different classes of vehicles. They are though clearly different classes (as in this case with a motorcycle and SUV), but THEY are clearly different classes of vehicles and Luna Una owns the Speedee truckand and Joe Schmoe owns the car and they have no connection at all.

It kind of makes me wonder if a "reader" an automated one did not read the plate and sent some type of alert because of theft. But there is no indication or reason to think that. I guess I am just saying that does happen with the automated tickets so it crossed my mind.

Regardless, in this case the vehicles were not even of the same state, nor type, and more, so no matter how it occurred, LE should have picked up on at least one of those factors.
