ONGOING CRIME BREAKING NEWS!

Starting in January 2020, this thread is about the news as it breaks!

Bernard Madoff says he is dying and is asking a judge for compassionate release from prison, where he is serving 150 years for orchestrating the largest Ponzi scheme in history, according to a Wednesday federal court filing.

Madoff, 81, has terminal kidney failure and a life expectancy of less than 18 months. When the court sentenced him, “it was clear that Madoff’s 150-year prison sentence was symbolic for three reasons: retribution, deterrence, and for the victims,” the court filing states. “This Court must now consider whether keeping Madoff incarcerated … is truly in furtherance of statutory sentencing goals and our society’s value and understanding of compassion.”

Madoff said in the request for compassionate release that he “does not dispute the severity of his crimes.”

IMO- stay in jail

Maybe this magistrate/judge was bound by the way the law is written but logically, I don't think anyone who does not want contact with someone should not be able to prevent that contact by the other with an order. Barring, of course, that the one wanting it is not making contact with the person.

Sad, beautiful young lady.

The denial probably emboldened him.

Great point. Coincidentally, HLN just was covering how the murderer of Drew Carey's ex-gf (forget her name, sorry) by another ex. I guess he got out on bond and they were talking about restraining orders and how they need to be changed. One thing was they should not expire, another was how they are reactive and not proactive, and the proof needed, etc., a pattern and so forth.

Great point. I bet it did embolden him. I can see such a type even saying to her what are you going to do about me being here, etc., they did not believe you in court, etc.

Former Australian Prime Minister Claims 'Top Levels' of Malaysian Government Suspected Pilot of Missing Plane MH370

(PERTH, Australia) — Former Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott has said the “top levels” of the Malaysian government long suspected that the disappearance of a plane almost six years ago was a mass murder-suicide by the pilot. Abbott was prime minister when Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 carrying 239 people vanished on March 8, 2014, while flying from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing.

Australia, working on Malaysia’s behalf, coordinated what became the largest search in aviation history, but it failed to find the plane before being ended in 2017.

Speaking in a Sky News documentary to air on Wednesday and Thursday, Abbott said high-ranking Malaysian officials believed veteran pilot Zaharie Ahmad Shah deliberately downed the jet. “My very clear understanding, from the very top levels of the Malaysian government is that from very, very early on, they thought it was murder-suicide by the pilot,” said Abbott, who was Australia’s prime minster from 2013-15.

“I’m not going to say who said what to whom, but let me reiterate, I want to be absolutely crystal clear, it was understood at the highest levels that this was almost certainly murder-suicide by the pilot.”

A Malaysian-led independent investigation report released in 2018 said the plane’s course was changed manually but did not name a suspect and raised the possibility of “intervention by a third party.” Investigators, however, said the cause of the disappearance couldn’t be determined until the wreckage and the plane’s black boxes are found.

The Malaysian Ministry of Transport did not immediately respond to questions from The Associated Press about the remarks from the former Australian leader.

Malaysia has had a change of government since the plane’s disappearance, after Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad ousted the government led by Najib Razak, whose party had ruled Malaysia since its independence in 1957.

The pilot’s family has long denied he was suicidal. The 2018 investigative report said there was no evidence of abnormal behavior or stress in the two pilots and none of the passengers had pilot training.

Abbott said he did not believe conspiracy theories centered on the Malaysian government, which owns Malaysia Airlines. “I’ve read all these stories that the Malaysians allegedly didn’t want the murder-suicide theory pursued because they were embarrassed about one of their pilots doing this. I have no reason to accept that,” he said.

The Australian-led search scoured 120,000 square kilometers (46,000 square miles) of the southern Indian Ocean and cost 200 million Australian dollars ($150 million). A private hunt by Texas-based company Ocean Infinity later searched more than 96,000 square kilometers (37,000 square miles) of sea.

According to the criminal complaint, police spoke by phone with Ivery on Feb. 7. He indicated "there was a funeral for his son that he had with Ms. Banks." He indicated the two got into an argument "because Ms. banks blamed the defendant for the death of their son." Ivery told police "Banks was upset and making a scene" and that he "stayed for a little bit and then left to go sleep in his truck." The complaint says Ivery "did not know where Ms. Banks or the children were." Ivery indicated he was out of state and that he "would come back next Friday," Feb. 21 to be interviewed by police.

Memphis police received a call from Ivery's father on Feb. 15. He stated that Ivery "has confessed to (Ivery's father) that the Defendant had killed the mother of his children and his children in Milwaukee. Later, (Ivery's father) also told Memphis detectives that the Defendant had stated that he had burned the bodies."

Arzel Ivery is expected to be extradited back to Milwaukee. If convicted, he faces up to life in prison.

Heartbreaking. It had to be hard for the perp's father but he did the right thing reporting it, not everyone would do that. I see the son was 21 months old and died of asthma complications. Sad all of the way around.

one firefighter dead and one missing. due to all of the books in the old library, it was an intense fire. two 13 year olds just changed their lives and that of others.

They have found he other firefighter, looks like a young man. :( So two deaths.

A very adult criminal act ~ the two little brats better not get off because of their youth!

Very serious act. I would hope they had no idea or did not think of how damaging it could be but they definitely changed their lives and those of others and are old enough they should have known. It sounds like all patrons, etc. got out. These two are lucky they are alive when two poor firefighters lost their lives. I have been thinking about just how fast an old book could go up, all it would take is one light to a page probably and then all of the other books nearby, scary. I don't know if this was an old Carnegie library, I hate it when towns tear them down, however, they are old buildings with no sprinkler systems, etc.

A little more on the above case. It sounds like a neighbor saw some things and heard some things and called 911 the night before that are being looked at. I wonder if he had been arrested that night if they would be alive. I think this is a different article than any posted. I at least do not remember this part but may have missed it.

I just saw on HLN, I sure seem to quote them a lot lol, that the 13 year old boys in the library fire above are in custody and have been charged with arson, manslaughter and conspiracy. They also had more on the firefighters and someone from the fire department

HLN also does an hour every morning from 11 to 12 (here at least) on current cases. They had the Vallow case on and some others and they always seem to have just a little bit new. Called True Crime, it is on now. I find them the best even with their regular news for anything on TV with crime updates. Only in the mornings though then it is no longer news.

Okay, here's a stupid woman. She goes through drive throughs of two Sonics in Texas and robbed them both I gather. She had two kids in car, one an 8 months old I believe they said. Well duh, she and car were on video. WHO is this clueless?? She confessed when told that.

ETA: Per HLN again
