ONGOING CRIME BREAKING NEWS!

Starting in January 2020, this thread is about the news as it breaks!

Bernard Madoff says he is dying and is asking a judge for compassionate release from prison, where he is serving 150 years for orchestrating the largest Ponzi scheme in history, according to a Wednesday federal court filing.

Madoff, 81, has terminal kidney failure and a life expectancy of less than 18 months. When the court sentenced him, “it was clear that Madoff’s 150-year prison sentence was symbolic for three reasons: retribution, deterrence, and for the victims,” the court filing states. “This Court must now consider whether keeping Madoff incarcerated … is truly in furtherance of statutory sentencing goals and our society’s value and understanding of compassion.”

Madoff said in the request for compassionate release that he “does not dispute the severity of his crimes.”

IMO- stay in jail

I'm glad this lady has been found, but the stories between the rescuers and her daughter are polar opposite. Daughter says she was too weak to self rescue and could only take a couple of steps at a time and she couldn't even open her mouth because of dehydration (she was found next to a stream) and the rescuers saying she needed only minimal assistance to get out. Not sure what to make of this one.

I read a thing or two about this and out of niceness and not knowing have refrained from saying anything anywhere. However, I do have questions. I still have a few over another case or two... And maybe some can guess which ones... On the other hand, I am always glad when someone is found safe, no matter the truth. I hope if any are hyped, made up or false, that the person gets help. I am not saying it is the case here, I don't know, nor with the others--I just know some leave some major unanswered questions after the public was involved, got so concerned and helped, donated and/or searched.

Houston police officer dead, 1 hurt; suspect in custody

A suspect is in custody after one Houston police officer was fatally shot and another wounded at a southwest Houston apartment complex Tuesday

The slain officer was identified as Sgt. Harold Preston, a 41-year veteran of the force.

"We've lost just a wonderful human being," Acevedo said during a news conference at Memorial Hermann Hospital. “He is leading with men and women on streets, instead of choosing to sit in an office drinking coffee and reading the paper. That is the man he was — he is a man who lived with elderly parents to take care of them. As good as he was as a cop, he was a better human being, that is just the guy that he was and we are going to miss him.”

He was supposed to retire next week.

So we apparently have a family of illegals here and the father has been arrested many times prior. One officer dead and another shot and on a domestic call. The teen warned officers though and the teen was sent to the door? I do not quite understand that part.

Tragic. Prayers to the officers' families. It seems to me this could have been avoided in many ways, starting with there were prior arrests and he at least was here illegally. I am not going into politics but for some reason nothing was acted on in those years.

I would not want to be a LE officer, particularly these days.

FedEx driver shot, critically injured in Philadelphia

The driver, who was approximately 30 years old, was shot once in the chest and once in the left leg, investigators said.

He was taken by police to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital where is was listed in critical condition.

Neighbors in the area said they are shocked by the shooting and that many in the area know the FedEx drivers by name.

One person has been arrested in connection with the shooting, police said. No weapon has been recovered.

I wonder what the motive is.

Latest I can find on AG Ravnsborg's fatal crash

new to me info from article:

"After the crash, I asked the manager of the Redfield restaurant if she had seen Ravnsborg drinking. She declined to answer the question."

Why did she decline to answer a simple question - did your restaurant serve the AG alcohol? Seems to me if the answer is no - that would have put an end to speculation..... but she did not.

Of course there are multiple other ways Ravnsborg may have attained alcohol that evening. Just saying.

A New Jersey woman saved herself from a kidnapping attempt by mouthing “help me” to bystanders.

Lt. Robert Bracken claimed an unidentified man approached the couple’s vehicle and told them they were “breaking the law” for being intimate in a public space.

“They were approached by a man unknown to them who identified himself as a police officer,” Bracken told the outlet.

“He said to the victims, ‘Hey, give me a little bit of money and I won’t bring you to jail,'” Bracken said. “With that, he indicated he was armed.” The couple did what the man said and the woman got in the back seat so he could be in the passenger seat. Another man followed them to the bank in a separate car. Once at the bank, the female victim made eye contact with a stranger in the bank parking lot.

“It was at that time that the female victim was able to mouth the words ‘HELP ME" The witness dialed 911. “Fortunately, officers were available and nearby when the call came in and were able to interrupt the crime in progress,”

Not that I am sticking up for it but if it was the reporter who asked, it could be why she did not respond at all. She was probably advised not to talk to reporters, however, yes, one would think if she could give an absolute "no" then she/they would and put the question to rest or try to. Additionally, if any one person, owner, server, was given him drinks unbeknownst to others, someone giving a flat "no" for anyone at the restaurant giving him alcohol could put them in a bit of a situation of did they know or did they not when they said "no"?

However, it is suspicious. When one couples it with no test until late the following day when he was "clear", it smells because there is no way to know now unless the restaurant or an employee admits to giving him alcohol. They could even find a liquor store purchase by him, just fictional speculation, and no proof he drank it...

Officials are now questioning her story

I didn't like this one from the start, not even when first reported. It just did not add up. I think in a few recent cases the goal is being in the news, "fame", attention, money... They are found but we never hear just how it went all those days away and what they did and how they survived, etc...

Of course there is no way to ever be sure when first hearing it and I am glad she is safe.

I tend to agree with this article though, and I also wonder if only she was part of it... Meaning, did she truly set out to worry her family to death and if it was faked, only she knew and worried them or did others know? Personally on this one, I would look not just at mom but make sure of everyone else as well...

If they can be sure and determine it, the gofundme funds should be ordered returned imo. And that should not be the only consequence. Is it just me or does this seem to be the year of copycats? Don't get me wrong, some are real crimes, like drownings of autistic children, hot car deaths, etc., but even in those, it is an attempt to use a story that they have seen others get away with or think will fly... In addition, it is not many, but we now have two shipping container deaths, and two retention pond deaths, both mothers, both Florida... Two may not be many but timing and more details makes one wonder... I am not saying all apply or are "fishy" but it has been a very noticeable thing...

@GrandmaBear - this is the other TCS member I told you about!!
I thought so when I saw the name. I looked for a thread quickly but did not see one. I thought maybe you did not do one as it is not a whodunit and there has been an arrest so I put it here. Two women that followed crime on TCS. Wow. I mean I can't make that mean anything and it must be a coincidence but still wow. Although I guess I could wonder if the wives shared the interest or their husbands were into following true crime as well. Other than that, just a coincidence.

What a terrible case though--her poor mother.
