Troy Dean Carney was a 44 year old truck stop laborer looking for work assisting truckers at the Pilot Truck Stop on Biddle Road near Central Point in the Rogue Valley of Southern Oregon. Troy was last seen leaving the truck stop around 6:00 pm on Labor Day 9/1/2008. When he was discovered in his sleeping bag near the Bear Creek Greenway, he was still wearing the same clothing he had last been seen wearing. Troy's mom tried calling him and did not get any response from the early morning of 9/2/2008 until he was discovered on 9/4/2008.
Troy's camp on the greenway was set fire in the very early morning of 9/14/2008.
Good point about what did he do from 6pm onwards. I had always thought that video was from later. What time does it get dark at that time of year @Kimster ? That night it was a dark moon, Troy's mum says. I would assume he went to his sleeping bag once it was dark and got up when it was dark.
Troy's mum names the person with the kids who left the Wolverine mask too. I will have to find that quote as well.

Trade mark was the Wolverine mask. The mask was found at his campsite, not Troy's.
That's how Troy met him, camping not far from Troy, had two kids, last name Shultz or Schultz.
I talked to Troy about everyday. On Aug. 31st, that evening he called me, would have been about 6m OR. time.
He called to tell me he was going back to the east coast. One trucker friend told him if he ever decided he wanted to go back to the east coast, call him and he will swing by and pick him up. Troy said he called him. I don't know what kind of phone he had but he said he could only leave a message and the guy would call him back. Troy said he left about 4 messages on his phone. The guy didn't call him back so I said What are you going to do, just go to the truck stop and wait for him? He said no, he will know right where to find me. That following night he was dead. Actually very early morning Sept. 2nd.
I told the Detectives that story a few times and each time they blew it off. They would never give me an answer about tracing that phone number. I have always wondered about that."

So the two Shultz brothers - one was murdered by John du Pont in 1996 - will find the info. This brother that camped nearby had to therefore be the surviving brother. A film was made about this called Foxcatcher.
If I'm looking at this right, the day he was found was like 90 and at 6 was just starting to come down from sucha temp. When I did this search I forgot the date on the case isn' when he was killedI wasnt' the day he was killed. I'd need to go back and look for the Pilot day video date and it's a work day for me and I got no sleep.
Even though this wasn't that day, I am going to link it as histsorical weather can be obtained through varoius sites and if someone is interested, they can look for the correct date.
Wouldn't doubt weather was similar and it would be light at 6 without doubt. It wouldn't be bed time for most people and it would still be prettty hot as well.
Seeing this kind of heat brings another thought of if each day reached such temps, after not being found for some days, I imagine the body would be emitting odor and would perhaps not be in the beset ot shape.
How was he found, I can't recall if we know? Meaning did someone stumble on him and call cops or mom get cops to go look for him or how was it he was found on the 4th?
The Pilot video was 6pm on the 1st Sep. He was shot at approx 4 am. He did not answer his phone when his mother rang from 6am onwards on the 2nd. I think they know the TOD because people heard the shot but did not report it. He was discovered on the 4th - possibly as a result of his mum contacting LE IMO.

Talking to people in the campground or in the area? I am getting a mixed picture here. On one hand mom says he would never share where his spot was he was sleepign and so on and yet it sounds like he knew who was around him or who some were he encountered or met and told mom. Or did this all come out after and he didn't? A bit confused on all that.
And this also is IF he even went to bed at 8, who knows? And as sorry as I feel for mom he probably tried to reassure her about his life and that he always took all safety precautions, etc. Maybe USUALLY he never shared his plans or sleeping location but does it mean he always didn't or never sat with others, met others at a camping area, at the Pilot, etc.? He shared things with some, not sure what all things but the "trucker" would know where to find him when apparently mom worried about what was he going to do hang out at the Pilot waiting for him and so on...

They'd know to reassure me as I'd be worried and they'd NOT tell me if they were not doing all the things I said they needed to for safety's sake. IMO this guy just has to be a strong suspect. He was actually there that night at Troy's camp. Did LE interview him even? He only got 10 years so is already out of prison when I checked his offender status. WTF !!!

(SALEM, Ore.) - Salem Police detectives made an arrest in the death of a man that was found in Mill Creek in southeast Salem Thursday night. Earlier today, officers arrested 47-year old Ben Stephens for the crime of Murder.
Joseph W. Hollander, Marion County Deputy District Attorney, says Salem Police responded to a report of a body Thursday, August 6, 2009 at approximately 10:09 p.m.
The location was in Mill Creek close to Airport Road between Mission Street SE and State Street. When officers arrived they located an male adult deceased in the creek.
"Salem Police Detectives responded, but due to the darkness and the inherent dangers of working around moving water in the dark, the scene was secured for the night," Hollander said.
Salem Police continued their investigation today. Hollander says the location appears to be a transient camp on Mill Creek. Salem Police Patrol Officers, Detectives and Criminalists processed the scene until the early afternoon.
Hollander says the deceased male has been tentatively identified as a 40-year old transient. His identity is being withheld in order to notify relatives. Stephens is also believed to be a transient.
The Marion County Medical Examiner has scheduled an autopsy that will be conducted by the Oregon State Medical Examiner. That will take place Saturday, August 8, 2009.
The defendant was arraigned on a District Attorney's Information at the Marion County Circuit Court Annex 4000 Aumsville Highway today at 3:00 p.m. Hollander says the next step is for the case to be presented to a Grand Jury.
Murder is an unclassified felony with a sentence of life in prison with a 25 year minimum.
Hollander says further information will be provided by the District Attorney's Office following the autopsy and the Grand Jury Proceeding.

Here I can't help but think of how it is and if a place was left to do its own thing like a forest or woods or property, there'd be plenty of places to hide and bed down in as for instance deer do. Long grasses, raspberry bushes, blackberry (wild with both), new trees started from droppings of other trees, just little things ranging to "adolescent" trees if you don't clear and just let nature do its thing.
I take it they used them for cover and to hide right?

Around here, there’s all kinds of shrubbery you can hide around. I would assume they were around the blackberry bushes because they had grown high around there. You can’t get too close to them though. They do like to hold onto you. Ouch.

yeah I thought of that too lol. Plus the bug or animal activity the fruit brings... Bears, ants, I could go on. Would you have had fruit on them at that time of year? Here blackberries are August (maybe a few in late July) and can go into early September. And yes THORNS.

Yeah. This was an urban campsite I believe in between two roads or in between a road and a railway, from what I remembet unmaintained probably and an article I posted upthread discussed the out of control blackberry bushes IIRC.
