Thornton police seek family who disappeared, leaving 5-year-old home alone

Police in Thornton are asking for the public's help in locating a family who disappeared, leaving their 5-year-old daughter home alone.

The missing family — 40-year-old Liu Nei Li, 48-year-old Zaiqiao Feng, and 2-and-a-half-year-old Anny Li — were last seen leaving their home Monday.

The three were in a 2008 gray Toyota Highlander with Colorado plates 231-REZ.

Police said the family's relatives found the 5-year-old girl in the home's front yard by herself Monday evening. The girl told police that her family were going to the grocery store that morning, but they never returned.

Those relatives called police soon after the girl was found and told authorities they're not sure why the couple would take off with their 2-year-old daughter but leave the 5-year-old home alone. The family's disappearance is a mystery to them, the relatives said to police.

The 5-year-old remains with the family's relatives.

On Wednesday evening, Thornton police executed a search warrant at the home and found an illegal marijuana grow, a police spokesperson said.

Missing parents leave 5-year-old at home alone, disappear with toddler. Police are now searching for them. [Reports]

Colorado authorities are searching for a couple accused of leaving their 5-year-old daughter at home alone and never returning.

CBS9 reports that Liu Nei Li, 40, Zaiqiao Feng, 48, of Thornton, have not been seen since Monday. The pair took their 2-year-old child, Anny Li, with them but left their older child behind. Family members found the little girl at around 9:30 p.m. on March 30, outside on the front yard of the family’s home, off of 4050 block of 130th Way.

The 5-year-old, who was home alone by herself for most of Monday, told family members that her parents said they had to go to the grocery store and left without her. She’s now in the care of relatives.

According to the Thornton Police Department, the couple may be in a grey 2008 Toyota Highlander with Colorado license plate, 231-REZ. Police spokesperson Matt Barnes told The Denver Post that there is no indication of any foul play.

Thornton Police continue to search for missing family; discover illegal marijuana grow inside home

Police continue to search for a missing Colorado family. Detectives are searching for a toddler and her parents, who were last seen on Monday.

The circumstances surrounding the family’s disappearance remain a mystery. The parents have two daughters. Police say they took the youngest daughter with them and left the 5-year-old behind.

Police have uncovered an illegal marijuana grow inside the home on 130th Way in Thornton.

“That’s why it’s so perplexing. We don’t know, are they still local? Are they injured? Are they hurt? Did something bad happen to them - or did they just leave the state? We don’t know,” Thornton Police Officer Matt Barnes said.

We do know they left on their own. It was Monday morning when police say 48-year-old Zaiqiao Feng and 40-year-old Liu Nei Li and 2-year-old daughter, Anny Li, were last seen. They left in a gray 2008 Toyota Highlander with Colorado plates 231-REZ. Neighbors said the family left in a “hurry” and tossed a duffel bag into the car. Police say the parents left their 5-year-old daughter at the house and told her they were going to the grocery store. Luckily, a relative who lives across the street found her wandering in the yard around 9 p.m. Monday night.

“We were just lucky a relative lived in the area and saw the girl in the yard and took her in to safety. If she would have remained in the home overnight or for days without anyone finding her – its concerning,” Officer Barnes said.

I'm afraid someone took them and the 5-year-old didn't know. Maybe the 5-year-old was in another room and they told the 5-year-old that they would be back, but actually they were being escorted out of the house.

Someone apparently saw them leave “in a hurry”. They “tossed duffle bags into the car”. If someone came in, they probably wouldn’t have let them pack bags.

I wonder if any of the marijuana plants are missing.

I didn't realize someone saw them outside. I missed that part. I haven't been following this case closely, obviously.

Zaiqiao Feng, Liu Nei Li & Daughter Missing: 5 Fast Facts You Need to Know

1. They Were Last Seen Leaving Their Home on Monday Morning with Their 2-Year-Old

Zaiqiao Feng, 48, Liu Nei Li, 40, and their child were last seen on Monday morning, March 30, KDVR reported. They were seen leaving their home at 4056 E. 130th Way.

2. They Were Driving a Grey Toyota Highlander

They were last seen in a 2008 grey Toyota Highlander with a Colorado license plate 231-REZ, police said.

Colorado is currently under a stay-at-home order.

3. They Left Their 5-Year-Old at Home & Relatives Found Her in the Front Yard

Officials said that the couple had their two-year-old daughter (pictured above) with them but they left their five-year-old at their home. Their five-year-old daughter said that her parents told her they were going to the grocery store.

Family members who live nearby called the police after they found the girl in the front yard on Monday evening, KDVR reported. The girl is now staying with family.

4. An Illegal Marijuana Home Grow Was in Their Home

When police entered their home on a search warrant, they found an illegal marijuana grow inside, Denver Post reported. Police said they are investigating whether the illegal grow played any role in their disappearance.

It’s not clear how the marijuana was illegal or why and police have not elaborated on what they found. In Colorado, marijuana can be purchased at a dispensary or you can have six plants per adult for personal use. You can read more about Colorado’s home grow laws here.

5. Police Have No Reason To Suspect Foul Play at This Time

Police told Denver Post that there was no indication of foul play. Few details are known about what happened to the couple or where they might have gone.

Colorado sure wins this past couple of years at least in some very odd cases. All tragic but wow. Who does leave one child and a child of that age? I hate to say this but nothing surprises me anymore, were both children the bio children of both of them? Were they adopted? Corona going on, could they get out of the country with the one but not the other for some reasons? Adopted probably unlikely but hard to say. It is very in the norm nowadays but wasn't years ago, but our health care has learned so much, these parents were 48 and 40 with a 5 and 2 year old. At the least, they had the children late in life. Finally, any idea what the case above is about?

Just talking out loud, another odd one. The vehicle description and plate should not be too hard to locate if it is out and about or abandoned? Numbers (out of order) but of 1-2-3 and a word that I consider short for a dinner reservation, a REZ.

I was wondering that maybe the child left behind has a medical issue that would require them to reveal themselves / come out of hiding to seek medical help.
But then... this is the child they took with them.

Anny reportedly has medical issues that require her to take frequent medication. It’s unclear if her parents took the child’s medication with them when they left.

The older child would be able to remember details a bit better than the younger one. So, if they went to make a drop then the little one is less likely to recall details of who, where, when, etc.
This explanation is the most plausible to me. I'd like to know what the extent of the illegal grow was about, though? I don't know about in Colorado, but they say marijuana is not profitable in Oregon anymore because the supply outweighs the demand by a lot.

yes, was it just one or two plants or a full fledged operation? It makes a big difference in context.

Well, marijuana is legal in Colorado. They could have had up to 12 plants (up to 3 flowering at one time).
However, because there were children in the home, if they had even one plant that wasn't properly "locked up" it now becomes illegal.
Also, it has to be for personal use. If you are selling it, it's now illegal.

So yeah, you're right. It could have been dozens of plants and they had some sort of operation. OR, it could have been one plant that wasn't locked up properly. Seems like an important distinction to make.
