Missing nine-year-old girl was holidaying in the Blue Mountains, search continues​

Police are continuing an extensive search for a missing nine-year-old girl who was holidaying in the NSW Blue Mountains.

Charlise Mutten, 9, was reported missing from a Mt Wilson property at about 8.20am on Friday and has reportedly been missing since Thursday.

Acting Superintendent John Nelson said Charlise is originally from Queensland and has been holidaying with her family in Mt Wilson over the school break.


Superintendent Nelson said Mt Wilson is a large area to search and police will use all resources possible to try and find the girl.

"The Mt Wilson area is a small community surrounded by bushland and some rugged bushland," he said.

The search restarted at first light with police holding grave concerns for the girl's welfare.

Crews looked in tents and bins for any sign of the child yesterday.


Officers are investigating all possibilities in the search for Charlise.

"She's a nine-year-old girl and she's missing we're here to pull out every stop that we can," Superintendent Nelson said.

"We're not discounting any scenario at this stage."


A woman was comforted by ambulance officers at the search centre before being taken to a Katoomba hospital.

Police are appealing for help from the public and have sent out geo-targeting messages.

Her parents' house has also been searched and is under police guard.

Superintendent Nelson said it is a "traumatic" experience for the family.

A car was seized in Penrith by police yesterday.

9News understands the homicide squad has been called in to assist local detectives.

I saw a picture of Charlise in her school getting an award. It led me to believe that she was doing well in school. Pretty amazing for a girl that’s gone through hell because of her irresponsible parents. Sounds like she had a caring grandma.

Police will allege Stein spent up to five hours driving around Sydney with his fiancé's daughter's body in the back of a boat, the Daily Telegraph reports.

The 31-year-old spent hours deciding where to leave her body before dumping it near a river, police will claim.

Detectives believe Charlise's mother had left her daughter in the care of Stein last Tuesday night - the last time she was confirmed to be alive.

Police will allege she was killed within the following 15 hours.

So he is actually in a big city with her in the back of the boat, for FIVE HOURS. I assume he was pulling the boat with the truck and most likely she was in the barrel or covered. Wow. I wonder why he was looking in the city for a spot... I mean he may have went in to buy the sand bags but then why not look for somewhere remote after that... And cities are full of cameras...

So mom left her in his care but didn't report until days later... Where was mom? And why did she leave her with him to begin with? Did she leave the area? Go out to party? Go back to town? Some part of me (no real reason) keeps wondering was this to be her first meeting with him and time to "bond" alone together before mom and he got married and mom loved and naively trusted him...? We have few details on how often Charlise was with mom or him or even if ever or how long mom and him had been together...

Later in the article it says the police can't get near mom yet. Well, I hope there is a real reason for that medically or mentally. It seems unusual to me, it's not like she was in a car accident or something and healing physically.

Mom may be completely innocent and totally over the edge and grief stricken and I don't judge that. I hope she does manage to step up soon for her child if she is innocent and against him and talk to police and asist with information. And if she is not, well then that protection in hospital better not last too long imo.

This again leads to my question of when was mom actually hospitalized? Did she report her missing from the hospital?

How is it that somebody with a property like that does not have access to a working boat? There has to be much more to this story! Every explanation only leads to more questions.

So she is pregnant with his child. One would hope then her "medical" condition isn't due to drugs, hopefully not using while pregnant. Interesting that she collapsed when being questioned lightly but apparently the doctors are buying it and protecting her for the moment. She collapses when they need info about her daughter to find her daughter fast... Difficult to approach LE keeps saying... Who runs the show in this world these days... Maybe she is medicated so they have to wait until clear headed before talking to her but when she is, is combative? Probably the excuse of the safety of the unborn baby is what is working for her...?.

He may have had a tough childhood but his mother gives excuses and even seems to blame the mother for her son being involved with her as if what he did was due to her, etc. Then we have his meds and mental issues and they are not an excuse for murder but are the first things brought up and that which a defense/defendant runs to. And he had a hard childhood. And lives in a shack on their property. Other son runs their business I gather with his partner. Those present had to know he had the boat... WHY was the girl left with him? The way this sounds, perp's mom was no fan of girl's mom but had met mom and girl. I don't think we still know who was present on the property even of his family...

Actually, his mom, the child Charlise's mom and the perp himself seem to have something in common. Excuses and looking for a way out using those excuses. Mom collapses. He needs his meds. While pregnancy and engagement within a year isn't exactly a long many year relationship, a year is still a year, not like it was a month later. A previous article referred to her being a mother of two so is this unborn baby a third...? Where is the other child?

The grandparents had guardianship of Charlise so neither bio parent had guardianship. Grandma does mom's job, raising her daughter and doing a good job it seems. Perp lives in a shack on the property(?) his parents own. His brother and his husband run the venue so parents provide that job and residence for that son in a way. Perp's mom is making excuses for perp. Child's mom has medical episode when questioned. Son needs medication and has mental issues. Perp went to private school. It seems the parents here of the ADULT children involved are the ones providing and taking care of things for those adult children. Just an observation. And all I see is excuses, excuses, excuses for the one/those responsible for the DEATH of a child.

And he wants protective custody too for HIS own safety. Well gee, nice he worries about his own safety while Charlise was anything but safe with HIM. SMH.

Thanks for that info. That short bit answered a couple of things I think we all were wondering.

Most times when a child is with a grandparent or something, or in foster care, I always figure there's a good chance dad is a deadbeat dad, and not only the mother is the problem or grandma would not have the child/ren. Either a deadbeat/not in the child's life, doesn't pay support or been in trouble himself. I think when a child goes missing relatives, friends or media contact the other bio parent, and definitely LE. Then they say something and claim to love their child who they often know nothing about and haven't seen in years, and often say something against the other parent which seemed to be the case here. If this is true, I'm sorry, he didn't do it BUT he could have possibly had custody, been having her for the holiday or stepped up imo. It also doesn't make it easy for a then single mother who has no support or help from the child's father and has to do it alone 24/7.

Met while she was in prison... Maybe visiting someone else in the same visiting room and met her....? Because inmates are never put together male and female or see each other do they?

Yeah both the jumbled contradictory info or lack of it so they guess in this case in reporting is noticeable imo.

My understanding is they responded to the property, on questioning of the mother she collapsed and was taken to the hospital... Or at least that's how it sounds...

Also I think he had the boat too weighted down or something from where he wanted to put in and get it moving? However other reports do make it sound as if the boat just didn't work or something.

The brother and his husband operated the wedding venue so if there was a problem with the boat maybe the perp didn't know and just took off with it? Of course that's just speculation on my part, we have to totally speculate and guess on some of these details.

But I think it was more likely the "operator". Boat was probably fine for proper use but he had no idea what he was doing and it had weight. He apparently tried different locations to put it in didn't he? So to me that makes the most sense. Maybe not enough depth, couldn't shove it off or something...?

Her son is going away for life and that would absolutely devastate any mother BUT YOU GOT IT, she is looking like an overboard mother who seems to think her son is 15, picked the wrong girl and made a youthful mistake or something. He killed a CHILD and he is 31 AND has done prison time lady. If he hasn't learned anything by that age and that prison stint, he isn't going to and that means everyone will always be in danger if he is no behind bars. Mom needs to get a clue. HIs past life doesn't matter, there are no excuses for what he DID which was to murder a child.

In fact, I don't think we have a single parent that was "adulting" ever in Charlise's life, not a single adult among them. Not mom, not bio dad and certainly not future stepdad/the perp. And two of them at least are in their 30s! Mom wasn't taking care of her own child, her mother had to. Dad wasn't involved in her care or even seeing her. And stepdad/perp's mom is making excuses for him as if he's a minor child himself. Finally, two of the three at least have done recent prison time.

Like you said, still some contradictory statements though. Like:

And then she reported her daughter missing from the wedding venue. I guess it's possible Charlise was never there, and that's just his property that he was getting the boat from, etc. But it certainly seems mom left her with him somewhere, not together, for some period of time.

Yeah, the reporting is a mess or maybe it is the fact they didn't tell the truth for one if she was killed earlier in the week and someone stated her last sighting was after she would have been killed. On the veranda sighted. At the wedding venue. Lots of confusion. On top of it in the begging here, reporting was all over the place as to who lived where, with who and more that I didn't even bother to go into it was so contradictory with every article.

I think she was at the wedding venue most likely with him at some point but when... And if she stayed with him, they were likely at this "shack" on the property we are now hearing about.... However, we don't even know who was on the property. Were the brother and his husband home and was the perp's mom there as well or not? I mean if it was a family get together or "getting to know this child", maybe they were welcome in the "big house"... After all, she was allegedly on the veranda...

One other thought I had is his mother makes it pretty clear she did not like Charlise's mother dating her son... Did she maybe refuse to let her stay at the house or something but the child staying was okay...? Total speculation on my part... Again, I don't think we know who was even home if anyone. I am behind here on reading though.

Yeah, "my son would never, or he volunteers here, he was a boy scout", etc., etc. that kind of garbage as if NO ONE who does such things can KILL. Not saying this guy was any of those things, just an example of such mothers, fathers, etc. It SICKENS me too.

This is exactly the kind of perp and family we dealt with in our case. They could be faced with the medical evidence and their son's or brother's lies right in front of them and smile and more or less be like oh no, he could never. No. But he's a GOOD BOY. The man accused of murdering his stepdaughter Charlise Mutten has asked to be kept away from other prisoners while in custody over the alleged killing.

The body of nine-year-old Charlise was found in a barrel on Tuesday night in scrub near the Colo River - an hour from where she disappeared on a private property in Mount Wilson, in NSW's Blue Mountains.

Justin Stein, 31, appeared in Central Local Court on Wednesday morning where he did not apply for bail and it was formally refused.

His barrister told Magistrate Robert Williams his client needed his medication for mental health issues while in custody, adding he had been on 'high dosages' for many years.

He also expressed Stein had concerns for his safety.

'The other matter I'm instructed to raise relates to his concerns for personal safety in custody,' the barrister said.

'He has asked the court to recommend a no association classification.'
