ONGOING CRIME BREAKING NEWS!

Starting in January 2020, this thread is about the news as it breaks!

Bernard Madoff says he is dying and is asking a judge for compassionate release from prison, where he is serving 150 years for orchestrating the largest Ponzi scheme in history, according to a Wednesday federal court filing.

Madoff, 81, has terminal kidney failure and a life expectancy of less than 18 months. When the court sentenced him, “it was clear that Madoff’s 150-year prison sentence was symbolic for three reasons: retribution, deterrence, and for the victims,” the court filing states. “This Court must now consider whether keeping Madoff incarcerated … is truly in furtherance of statutory sentencing goals and our society’s value and understanding of compassion.”

Madoff said in the request for compassionate release that he “does not dispute the severity of his crimes.”

IMO- stay in jail

This one is a tough call... On the one hand, she is 16 and a minor. On the other hand, she set up this robbery which resulted in murder the way it sounds. If she was trafficked, does that justify a set up robbery and murder? I guess I would want to know more. Many debatable points in this one. Charging as an adult is one... So she is looked at as a minor in one respect but as an adult with this charge... She was offered a deal of ten years and refused it.

Headline makes the husband sound like an after thought... Nurse was beloved, oh, husband died too. Regardless, her son apparently killed them both... There may not be as many serial killers these days but there certainly are a lot of multiple murders...

I don't know if anyone else here followed this case. I did. Barbara Thomas, went missing in the desert and her husband was suspected and failed a polygraph allegedly. Well she has been found. A family member of his is out on the web in many places saying he should have been believed and that see, suspecting him was wrong, and see, it is simply heat stroke and telling people no foul play. Yet every article that is out about it says no such thing and states there is no cause of death yet. Make of it what you will but there is no verification or link to what she is claiming. She went missing more than a year ago so I am going to guess the remains were not in stellar shape. All articles (I read three) says there is no cause of death yet despite what some alleged niece of his is saying.

You should post this in the Floyd thread too.

I agree with this decision. While I get publicity and media bias and inflaming the public intentionally by media can go on (and I disagree with that), I very much agree with open and transparent court proceedings to the public, especially in a widely known and followed case and especially when it involves law enforcement or any official. If it was refused, there would be many saying oh yes, because it is law enforcement, it is more private, no airing it live, what are they hiding, etc...
