Race against time to find missing Emile: Desperate hunt for two-year-old French boy two days after he vanished while on holiday with his grandparents in Alpine village

French police have undertaken an extensive hunt for a two-year-old boy who went missing over the weekend while on holiday with his grandparents.

Émile was playing in the garden of his grandparents' home in the hamlet of Le Vernet in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence on Saturday afternoon when he vanished.

The family was getting ready to leave the house they were staying in when Émile took advantage of the inattention, officials said. His grandparents came to put him in the car and found that he had gone.

The grandparents then alerted the authorities of Émile's disappearance at around 5.15pm [4.15pm BST], at which point family members, police, emergency service workers, and local villagers started the search for the boy.

Still unable to find him, the initial 5km search area for the Émile has today been extended with a helicopter, thermic camera drones, and sniffer dogs all brought in to help.

François Balique, the mayor of Le Vernet, told French television that the boy was a good walker for his age.

'It’s a small village with 20 or so houses … we see everything. He could have gone some distance and perhaps got lost or was hiding,' he said

The area around Le Vernet is surrounded by forest is popular with hikers.

Émile, who is originally from Bouches-du-Rhône near Marseille, was spotted by two people as he left his grandparents' home. However, they then said they 'lost sight of him'.

Police have so far carried out a search of all houses in the village, and have called upon anyone with any information to come forward.

Releasing a photo and description of a child to social media and broadcasters, officials said he had brown eyes, blond hair, and is 90cm (almost 3ft) tall.

They said he was wearing a yellow top, white shorts with a green pattern, and hiking shoes at the time of his disappearance.

Police have so far ruled out any suggestion that he was abducted.

'The grid is quite small given the motor skills of this young boy and the topography', David Corona, a negotiator and profiler, and former Gendarmerie told BFMTV.

Mr Corona said the child's age was 'both an advantage and a disadvantage'.

'He is two and a half years old so he won't be able to go very far on his own. The problem is that he has poor motor skills so if he falls in a place where he has trouble getting out, he is going to have trouble finding his way back.'

Laure Westphal, a psychologist and associate researcher at the Sciences Po university also told BFMTV that it was likely that Émile could have ventured further than initially expected.

'A child of this age is in search of autonomy even if he knows he is dependent on the adult. This is the age when he begins to say no', Ms Westphal said.

There's something in the grandfathers past and there is a priest who killed himself. Read the DM article i posted a link but didn't copy pasta.

The grandparents seem to have a summer and winter home. The winter home is on the south cost and the summer home is in the mountains and it is the summer home he went missing from. The French are very family oriented. Have big family gatherings and sit down dinners outside in the summer. The whole country shuts down for two hours lunch every day. We had a tumbledown house in the Charente Maritime - about half way down the West coast and spent 20 years of holidays visiting every holiday we possibly could from April till September from the mid nineties till early 2000's. If we could we would always plan to be driving down at lunchtime as there was never any traffic then as they were all having big long lunches. We would go on the ferry to St. Malo then around 3 hours drive straight down via Nantes and close to La Roche-sur-Yonne.

Yeah a commune here in Britain is a large living community all in one big house or acreage and tents often where they live off the land, a bit hippy like.
Yeah the minute I heard of commune etc. my mind went to the hippy thing. So again it is good you shared what that means. I admit to being ignorant about France, their laws, and ways, I used to want to go there yrs ago but no longer, I feel the same way about Italy. Any similarities? I met or saw more Italians in MX than one could imagine... Boy could I sidetrack on the things...

I will have to go read the DM article, not been a good day but it is interesting to hear of the two hour thing, travel time, etc. We are probably some of the worst, most of us, about not being up on other countries, yet not all are up on ours either. I've been told Americans are so full of it and know nothing, yet many assume we as well are all like NYC or LA, etc. and that's not even close to true. Plus I am always interested in learning about others. Heck it is true though too but others do it as well, I mean state to state here some of us have no clue of the differences and are always asking.

Sounds like siesta or lunch time in MX lol. Yet things change as the yrs go on, we remember things as they were like wanting to go back but it changes so fast nowadays.

Anyhowwww... yeah I'm not surprised at what is going to be the likely outcome here... I do know the grandfather's thing... Will try to get to the DM article. I feel like my darned back is broken at the moment, just been a very bad week, although I am typing but it is with effort and out of desperation. I've really changed my mind on a lot of things and pain and I will leave it at that.

I know this case sounded at first like 3 people, the grandparents and the child but then started changing and that didn't last long, the initial thought...

And yeah, the mountain and backdrop, etc. so many were thinking if he wandered off in that area... But it just never made sense. News was not great and what did come imo only made it harder to discern fact.

You are so well traveled, I know a fair bit, but still understanding our world and systems we can barely keep up with, at least here. I admit to not knowing a lot about France although some time ago I lost the desire to ever go there even if i was magically young and felt good. And I know as much as you try, you don't get all of things here either, and then they change all of the time.

A bit of a sidetrack but anyhow, yes, this poor little boy. and I very much enjoy talking different countries that some would know more of than we do. i like learning diffferences in other states here in our own country, as i think it is key to a lot of things and people coming together.

This was fishy almost from the start to get back to it. At first it sounded like some idyllic holiday with well endowed grandparents taking their grandson for a holiday... It didn't stay that way, pretty quickly I was wondering about a lot of things, parying, drugs, abuse, etc.... And not such a family but just the opposite...

I hope to go read your DM one, just not doing so great. Not meaing to go on but need to brush hair out before dry when can hardly move, and etc. I am really hoping the chiro can hep tomorrow as I'm never doing PT again, at least not this one. Probably none EVER again the way I think right now. My goal actually right now IS to start a health care thread but probably won't get to that much less be able to share sh*t I'd like to.

My chunky cat keeps rolling onto my keyboard and I can hardly move him.

Sorry.

Anyhow this poor little boy. I know I wandered. Sorry. I am tracking somewhat though and it helps to know about France which you do and you've been able to read the aritcles, etc. you found. I think you are about the best at that. I miss the days I could deep dive and follow a ton.

So up to you but can you refresh me on the priest thing as I'm not likely to get to it right now. i recall a lot, knew grandfather's sh*t, etc. Is he a step by the way?

Man I think my back is broke or the way it feels right now anyhow.

Last thing I was watching was Nate with some new more unkown case and I wasTh going to link it in current news or whatever it fit. And yada, yada, but just not managing today. I am tempted to quit the pred as it is either that or the pain.

I haven't heard back from Mel to those that care.

I know you nor no one asked me to go on like this. Just not been a good time.

This little boy is dead, we know that, and his own loved ones or those who should have been his protectors and safety net seem to likely have done it.

I'm sorry all, for going on.

The priest killed himself. The grandfather sexually abused children at his school. Emile was found up the track past the church at a location that had previously been searched. I will copy pasta the map from thr DM article.

Gosh Dammit. I recalled the gfather, did not know the location but knew he was found near when they had looked farther back when.
Not been a great few weeks and now you have me wanting pasta even if I have to copy it. lol trying for lightness.
The priest I'm struggling with unless they only let that out more recently...?

I'm not sure if i have forgotten or wasn't part of the reports, could be either. I haven't been perfect about reading links lately but have been doing most when I can.

You are very good about bringing news that isn't always forefront here. And depending on the case. if haven't said that before i want to now. World news too.

Not sure when will get to but was grandfather a bio granddad, I keep thinking he was a step but could be wrong definitely.

Whatever it was pretty clear from early on the boy didn't run away and something was off in the family and the stories.

Man there is more Daybell stuff out too. Kohberger. West. LISK. Read. So many. Telling self to just leave it and catch up or link later but that never happens. I feel bad like when West fell kind of by the wayside and they are little boys and then later it just never happens as other crimes occur.

Think due for a break. Have been trying to do some fictional but then also care so much about a lot of these cases on or coming on all at the same time and so on.

I have 3 pred left i think. I tell ya when for the first time in my life I thought about trying to fight for the cake... LOL.

I have not heard back from Mel and I don't like that. And I don't know what it will turn into but I do want to start a health care thread here before I go down for the count and another nap or eating frenzy.
