Mother seeks justice after son shot while jogging in Brunswick, pair involved in killing not arrested

It’s been over two months since a young black man jogging in Brunswick, Ga., was gunned down by two white men who said they thought he was a possible burglar.

Ahmaud Arbery’s mother wants to know where is the justice.

“I just think about how they could allow these two men to kill my son and not be arrested, that’s what I can’t understand,” Wanda Cooper told news partner First Coast News.

A police report states about 1 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 23, Glynn County officers responded to Satilla and Holmes drives where shots were fired. They found Arbery, 25, dead on the scene.

Gregory McMichael, who worked several years for the Brunswick Police Department before serving as an investigator in the Brunswick District Attorney’s Office, told police there were several break-ins in the neighborhood. He said he saw Arbery running down Satilla Drive and asked his son Travis McMichael to help him confront him.

McMichael and his son got a shotgun and handgun because they “didn’t know if Arbery was armed or not.”

The father and son got into their truck and drove down Satilla toward Burford Drive. Gregory McMichael stated when they arrived at Holmes Drive, they saw Arbery running down Burford, according to the report.

Gregory McMichael told police they attempted to cut off Arbery and shouted “stop, stop, we want to talk to you.”

McMichael pulled up next to Arbery, and Travis McMichael got out of the truck with the shotgun. According to statements, that’s when the father said Arbery attacked his son and the two men started fighting over the shotgun. Travis McMichael fired a shot and then a second shot.

After video appears to show black jogger gunned down by 2 white men in coastal Georgia, family demands arrests

The fatal shooting of a black man — apparently recorded on video in February and posted online Tuesday by a local radio station host — will go to a grand jury in coastal Georgia, according to a district attorney.

Elements of the disturbing video are consistent with a description of the shooting given to police by one of those involved in the incident.

Ahmaud Arbery, 25, was jogging in a neighborhood outside Brunswick on February 23 when a former police officer and his son chased him down, authorities said. According to a Glynn County Police report, Gregory McMichael later told officers that he thought Arbery looked like a person suspected in a series of recent break-ins in the area.

After they chased down Arbery, McMichael told police, Arbery and McMichael’s son Travis struggled over his son’s shotgun. McMichael said two shots were fired before Arbery fell to the street, the report said.

S. Lee Merritt, an attorney for the Arbery family, said in a statement that the two men involved in the chase “must be taken into custody pending their indictment.”

Gov. Brian Kemp said the Georgia Bureau of Investigation has offered resources to Durden for his investigation. “Georgians deserve answers,” Kemp tweeted.

Kemp also retweeted the GBI’s post that Durden “formally requested the GBI to investigate the death of Ahmaud Arbery.”

That was a stupid thing to say. They could have phrased it differently.

After watching & listening to Brook Perez, who lived 90-95 feet away from Larry English's property, reasonable doubt about the crime in the neighborhood is surfacing. She is a credible defense witness, imo.

And another neighborhood resident, Annabelle Beasley, testifying about their feelings regarding crime in the neighborhood.

Crime occurs in a lot of neighborhoods, so I'm wondering how the jury will relate this gossip or rumors to the murder of Ahmaud Arbery.

Hopefully, the jury will realize these are not violent crimes and that it was a HUGE over reaction by TM. Also, I don't believe that TM was "asking" AA to stop. Since Bryan isn't going to testify the Nword comment can't come in. The Court TV analysts thought that if it had come in that would be the nail in TM's coffin.

it seems that most of the "crime" was also caused by the residents themselves by leaving stuff in their unlocked cars.

All 3 defendants have rested & the Judge has instructed the jury to report back on Monday morning @ 9am for closing arguments.

I don't like this at all. Closing arguments should take all day Monday. They'll probably start deliberations on Tuesday. Then Wednesday they may feel rushed to come in with a verdict. Will they want to possibly come back to court on Black Friday? Maybe the judge will give them that day off, but they'll be spending all day Thursday with a lot of family members who'll be asking about the case, I'd bet. I'd assume that it's a headache they don't want. They also may not want to come back after a long weekend to pick up where they left off four days ago.

Like guns. McMichael said he heavily suspected who took his gun. It wasn't Aubery. I don't lock my car doors either. After having a window smashed and my radio taken about 30 years ago a friend told me I shouldn't lock my doors. I had a smashed window in addition to my stereo being stolen and had I left it unlocked, I'd just be missing my stereo. Having said that. I don't leave anything that is monetarily valuable or valuable to me for other reasons in my car.

Yeah. Why aren't closing arguments tomorrow?

I'm wondering about this now. Were Greg and Roddie considering to testify also, but after seeing how the prosecutor eviscerated Travis decided not to?
In a way maybe they figure one testifying tells the story for all and the other two then don't have to testify. He at least gives the info of what they thought, why, etc. Not saying it is true just that the "version" of their story for the most part.

Also, he is the actual shooter... I don't think it will hold much weight but the other two may well argue they didn't kill anyone, etc. Travis maybe felt he had to get up there or his attorney did...?

So the state couldn't ask if Travis called Mr. Arbery a F****** N***** after shooting him on that day. However, could the state have asked him if he's ever used the N word before? That might have ignited some fury in McMichael. If he said "Sometimes" She could have asked how often? If he said "No" then it would come to his believability.

That statement would have been admissible if Bryan testified. Now, thinking as a juror, if Bryan had taken the stand would it have helped himself. If he had gotten up on the stand and said "I joined in because, from what I saw, Mr. Arbery must have done something very wrong.

When I heard Mr. McMichael say F****** N***** I realized I may have just made a big mistake."

Would that have swayed me? Doubtful, but I think it would have been his best chance at getting one juror to find reasonable doubt. However, Bryan would have to know that he was nailing McMichael's coffin shut.

It's pretty much what Greg would have said, but Bryan joined in for an unknown reason to the jury at this point, IIRC.

Yeah, I don't know, I haven't been able to watch it. Big risk to testify and risk cross examination as we know. Maybe they tried to get their stories out through other witnesses, etc. and of course they have opening and closing statements, even though they are not "testimony".

I wonder how much or if at all the three men and/or their attorneys collaborated on some if not all things for defenses? I mean I know they each have their own counsel and right to separate and confidential representation but wonder if they could? Like deciding just one of them needed to testify... Did the other defense counsel question Travis at all?

The McMichaels attorneys did work together on their 2 clients defense. IMO there wasn't any reason for Greg McMichael to testify since Travis testified.

Thanks. That makes sense that they would work somewhat together, at least for sure on accounts of what they claim happened that day, what they were "thinking" (they weren't) and more. I too think one testifying covered most things and putting both up is far riskier than just the one.

Today, counsel is reviewing the jury charging instructions as it relates to the case. Nothing significant or noteworthy as of yet, imo. Currently, the Judge has provided a 15 minute recess.
