What happened to Ashley Elkins? Family's desperate for mom of two search continues

A week after Ashley Elkins disappeared while running errands last week, her family is desperate to find the 30-year-old mom of two.

The hairstylist and mother of two was last seen on Jan. 2 when she left her home to run errands – leaving nothing behind except for one text from her phone, saying she was heading back from a beauty supply store.

On Tuesday, her family hit the streets with police to try to find her.

Elkins' family says her phone last pinged in Roseville near where her ex-boyfriend lives on Pinehurst. On Tuesday, a Michigan State Police Forensic Lab was on site at the ex-boyfriend’s apartment.

Warren Police are taking the lead on the case and say the forensic lab was brought in to provide expertise with analyzing evidence.

Warren Police have canvassed several area businesses for video and utilized digital forensics to help determine where Elkins could be.

Family members said they can't sit around to wait for answers and are asking anyone who possibly knows anything to come forward.

"I will not wait I will keep going until I find her," Monika said. "Just think about those boys, her sons. If you don’t care about me, her sisters, her grandmother, who is 85 years old, at least care about those boys."

Day five of landfill search concludes for missing Warren mom Ashley Elkins

It's been 15 days now since Ashley Elkins of Warren disappeared and five days since investigators started searching Pine Tree Acres landfill in Lenox Township.

Dozens of volunteers have returned day after day determined to make a break in the case.

Roseville Police Chief Mitch Berlin said progress is being made but not to the point of finding any definitive evidence tied to Elkins' disappearance.

"Well, we got some objects we are taking back for processing. We're not sure if they're related to the case or not," he said Wednesday.

7 News Detroit spoke with Macomb County Prosecutor Pete Lucido multiple times this week. He said testing those undisclosed objects found at the landfill takes time. Lucido said there are also items at Elkins' ex-boyfriend's apartment that investigators are testing.

Her ex-boyfriend, De'andre Booker, is in jail for allegedly lying to police and until any evidence surfaces that proves he's behind her disappearance or presumed murder, the prosecutor said all his office can do is wait.

"In regards to what we have, we have nothing at this time until the police finish their investigation, until the police bring us all the evidence in the case and request charges, and those charges could include murder. But the reality is they have not finished their work yet," Lucido said.

It's methodical work as Berlin described. Aerial shots from Chopper 7 show just how vast the search area is. The chief said 6.5 acres are being sifted through, 2 inches at a time.

7 News Detroit spoke to Elkins' uncle, Maurice Morton, on Thursday. He said loved ones remain optimistic that crucial evidence will be found.

"We appreciate everything the police are doing, all the volunteers, all the other agencies that are helping. We're just hoping something comes very, very soon," he said.

Missing Warren woman's family says search at landfill has 'concluded without success'

The family of a missing Warren mother of two said police have concluded their search for her body at a landfill in northern Macomb County "without success."

Elkins' uncle, Maurice Morton, released a statement on behalf of Elkins' family. He said though family members are disappointed in the results, they appreciate the efforts of more than 50 law enforcement officials and volunteers.

"The family has learned from Roseville police that their search for Ashley's remains at the landfill has concluded without success," said the family in a statement. "... We are requesting privacy at this time as we await a charging decision by the Macomb County Prosecutor's office. Thank you everyone for your prayers and support."

Roseville Police Chief Mitch Berlin had said that authorities collected some items found over the course of their search at the landfill and were taking them to a lab for processing.

Elkins' ex-boyfriend, DeAndre Booker, has been charged with lying to police officers from Jan. 4-7 in reference to their investigation into Elkins' disappearance.

The Macomb County Prosecutor's office has not received a warrant request from police to file additional charges against Booker, a spokesperson for the office said Monday.

Ashley Elkin's family hopes for murder charges as landfill search ends

Police are still investigating the disappearance of Ashley Elkins after a days-long search for her body at a landfill came up short.

“To hear that they've concluded the search without success is very disappointing for the family. They were looking for closure,” said Maurice Morton.

But after nearly a week of digging, none was found. Elkins' uncle, Maurice Morton, says that while the search did not end how they wanted, he and his family are still hopeful they'll get justice for Ashley.

“Now we're calling on the prosecutor's office to get the murder charges levied against DeAndre Booker. It's our understanding that there is still plenty of evidence in the case, so we're looking forward to those charges coming hopefully soon. Hopefully, this week,” Morton said.

“I don't know if a single Macomb County circuit court judge would cut somebody loose at this point in time with the evidence that the prosecution has gathered,” said David Griem.

David Griem is a former Macomb County and federal prosecutor turned defense lawyer.

Wimbley: What challenges exist in prosecuting this case if they don't find the missing's remains or her body?

"That makes prosecution, the case, that much more difficult, but again, I think they're going to be able to hold them just as they are holding him right now on the evidence what they have," Griem says.

Roseville Police led the weeklong search at the Pine Tree Acres landfill in Lenox Township after executing a search warrant at Booker's home—he was Elkins’ ex-boyfriend.

Among other items, investigators took a dumpster as evidence.

Right now, Booker is facing a four-year felony for allegedly lying to police about Elkins’ disappearance. He's locked up on a $250,000 cash bond.

“Hopefully, that forensic evidence comes back, and other evidence, and then the prosecutor is convinced to move forward with murder charges,” said Morton.

“I've turned down requests for warrants in similar situations. As long as I could hold the individual on some charge, while we made sure that nothing has been missed and that at whatever more evidence is out there that we'll get our hands on it,” said Griem.

The Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office says it’s awaiting lab test reports for various pieces of evidence in the case and that it has charged and convicted suspects in homicide investigations in which the remains were never found.

As for DeAndre Booker, he is set to be back in court Wednesday morning for a probable cause hearing.

Judge denies bond reduction request for ex-boyfriend in case of missing Warren woman

DeAndre Booker, the ex-boyfriend of missing mother Ashley Elkins, appeared in court on Wednesday for a probable cause conference.

Elkins, 30 of Warren, was last seen leaving her home on Jan. 2 and has not been found.

It was an emotional day for the Elkins family as they saw Booker stand before a judge through Zoom.

"Oh my God, they gonna let him out… I was terrified," said Monika Elkins, Ashley Elkins' mother.

Heartbroken, yet relieved, Monika Elkins is desperate for justice in the disappearance of her daughter.

"I want him to think about what he did to our family and what he did to those boys. I mean, was it worth it," Monika Elkins said.

Booker, 32, is charged with lying to a police officer in the disappearance of Ashley Elkins.

On Wednesday, Booker's defense attorney asked for the probable cause conference to be adjourned after receiving more information surrounding the case from the prosecutor's office. He also requested the suspect's bond be reduced.

"This offense that's charged is not that serious of an offense, and I think that the only reason that there is this kind of bond is based upon what the prosecutors here think they might charge him with in the future," said defense attorney Robbie Lang.

The prosecutor debated otherwise.

"I find it insulting that Mr. Lang would indicate that this is a small charge. I believe the family of Ms. Elkins, the missing woman, would think that someone lying to the police on her whereabouts is more than a serious charge," said Macomb County Assistant Prosecutor Carmen DeFranco.

The judge decided to keep the bond as is, saying the evidence against Booker is compelling.

"At this point, I'm going to deny the request for a bond reduction because I do think he's a flight risk," said Judge Joseph Boedeker.

Booker's probable cause conference is rescheduled for Feb. 5. His preliminary exam is set to take place on Feb. 26.

The family is hoping murder charges will be announced before the next hearing.

'We love you, Ashley': Missing Warren mother honored at candlelight vigil

Family, friends and community members gathered Saturday evening in Roseville to honor Ashley Elkins, a Warren mother of two who has been missing since Jan. 3.

More than a hundred people came bundled in winter coats and carried green and purple balloons. Vigil goers lit candles and wore buttons with Elkins' image as they gathered in the parking lot of the Hampton Court Apartments on Pinehurst, her last known location.

"We love you, Ashley," said her cousin, Taylor Redmond. "All these people turned up for you because we care about you. We love you and we will not stop until we find where you are. Never, never, never, never."

Ashley Elkins case: Officials provide update on DNA search, charging plans

Officials provided some major updates Thursday in the case of Ashley Elkins, including the search for DNA and their charging plans.

Local 4 has learned that DNA tests came back from the dumpster at the apartment, but there’s no update yet from the landfill search.

As a result of this new evidence, Local 4 has also learned that murder charges are expected on Friday.

Ex-boyfriend of missing Warren woman arraigned on murder charges

The ex-boyfriend of a missing Warren mother of two has been charged in connection with her murder.

DeAndre Booker, 32 of Roseville, was arraigned Friday morning on first-degree murder charges in the disappearance of Ashley Elkins, who has been missing for nearly a month. Booker was also charged with tampering with evidence, mutilation of a dead body and concealing the death of an individual.

He pleaded not guilty and was remanded with no bond to the Macomb County Jail.

On Jan. 7, investigators searched Booker's apartment, where an officer testified Friday to finding a large amount of blood in the bathroom. The officer claims DNA testing confirmed the blood was from Elkins.

Macomb County Prosecutor Peter Lucido couldn't reveal whether or not they know how Elkins died, but between the blood evidence they found in the bathroom, the lack of any communication coming from Elkins and the inactivity of her banking history since she disappeared, that was enough to bring a first-degree murder charge against Booker.

Ashley Elkins case: ‘Substantial’ amount of blood found in ex-boyfriend’s bathroom

Ashley Elkins’ ex-boyfriend is now facing murder charges after investigators found a “substantial” amount of blood in his apartment bathroom.

Officials confirmed blood was found in Deandre Booker’s apartment bathroom during a search and later learned it belonged to Elkins.

Police gave very limited details on the investigation during Friday’s press conference as it’s still ongoing and evidence is still being processed.

Booker was arraigned on Jan. 31, 2025, on the following charges relating to Elkins' murder:
  • Premeditated murder
  • Tampering with evidence
  • Disinterment of a body
  • Concealing the death of an individual
During the arraignment on Friday, officials said CCTV footage showed Elkins arriving at Booker’s apartment on Jan. 2, 2025, during the early morning hours. Booker was seen hours later leaving the apartment in Elkins’ car without her.

15 hours later, police said video footage showed Booker going in and out of his apartment, and Elkins was nowhere to be seen.

When police searched Booker’s apartment, they found a “substantial” amount of blood in the bathroom.

Booker was remanded without bond at the Macomb County Jail.

He is scheduled to return to court on Feb. 5, 2025.

Ex-boyfriend of missing Detroit-area woman returns to court on murder charges

DeAndre Booker, the ex-boyfriend of missing mother Ashley Elkins, was back in court on Wednesday on murder charges.

Booker, 32, of Roseville, appeared for a probable cause conference in the 39th District Court on Wednesday. In addition to the murder charge, he is also charged with lying to police, tampering with evidence, mutilation of a dead body and concealing the death of an individual.

However, it was decided to move the hearing to March 7 while the prosecution and defense review the evidence.

"I'm asking for this date, first week of March, I guess more to advise you of where we're at, how much discovery there's been, how much I've gone through. [I'm] just kind of keeping track of things as we go along before we end up having an exam, which could be months from now," defense attorney Robbie Lang.

Booker waived his right to a probable cause conference within 21 days of arraignment, meaning lawyers could thoroughly examine any evidence that could either send this case to trial or dismiss the charges.
