Man's body identified 38 years after being found in western North Dakota
WILLISTON, N.D. — A man whose body was found floating down the Missouri River 38 years ago and was buried without anyone knowing who he was has been identified.

The Williams County Sheriff's Department, who disinterred the young man's body from Riverview Cemetery on Monday, Aug. 10, said the body is that of Phillip Peterson.
The department didn't give any other information about Peterson.
Media coverage of the removal of his body from an unmarked grave led to a family member recognizing tattoos after seeing them on a news program.
The family member then contacted the sheriff's office, which said Thursday, Aug. 13, that the name and new technologies in digital forensics led to the positive identification.

The search for answers began in 1994 when a fisherman discovered a body in the lake. The Snohomish County Medical Examiner's office determined the deceased to be between 25 and 35 years old and the victim of a violent homicide. There were multiple facial reconstructions for the victim, in part because ethnicity assessment was inconclusive. Rodney Johnson, who was reported missing in 1996, had last been seen in 1987, when he was only 25 years old. It’s likely that the Lake Stickney John Doe had been in the lake for as many as seven years before being discovered.

Thanks to the combined efforts of the Snohomish County Sheriff's Office, Snohomish County Medical Examiner's Office, and Othram, a homicide victim found in Lake Stickney over 25 years ago has been finally identified as Rodney Peter Johnson.

On December 23, 2004 juveniles found a decomposed human skeleton in a barn in a wooded area near the intersection of Hwy 69S and FM 2813 in South Tyler, Smith County, Texas. A blue jacket, blue jeans, a black baseball cap, and brown Rockport shoes were found on the skeleton. The Tyler Forensic Medical Examiner determined the remains were that of a White / Caucasian male between 27 and 42 years old, approximately 5′ 8″ to 6’ 2” in height, with a medium to large frame and average muscle development. It was estimated the man died months earlier that same year.

The Sheriff's Office announced they identified William Thompson, 85, whose body was found in the area of west Klondike Rd. and Wild Lake Blvd. on January 23, 1985. They say he was murdered.
"The Escambia County Sheriff’s Office released details about the victim’s location and other identifying factors to the public. Years passed, but no tips on the case," a release states.
Deputies say that in 2018, a person who was searching for their missing family member read the story on the Sheriff's Office website and contacted investigators.
"The thing that stuck out to the person the most was the victims belt buckle with the hand-engraved initials 'W.T.'" the release states. "The person felt this could have been their missing uncle, whose last known location was in Escambia County near the same time John Doe’s body was discovered."
Investigators contacted the Medical Examiner’s office and used a sample of the tipster’s DNA with DNA from John Doe. Samples were sent to the University of North Texas to be analyzed. The results of the test revealed the body as Thompson.
Deputies say the last time Thompson made contact with his family was on September 23, 1983, when he called his mother from an unknown location on Pensacola Beach.
"A missing person’s report was never filed with the ECSO," the release states. "His case is being actively worked as a homicide."

The Benicia Police Department said Thursday it reopened the case in July and was able to connect the remains to Dolores Wulff through DNA obtained from one of her children.
Wulff was a 45-year-old secretary and living in Woodland when she vanished in the middle of the night in July 1979. The torso turned up that September but was never identified.
Yolo County Sheriff Tom Lopez said.the case has haunted his office for decades.
Days after the disappearance Wulff’s husband, Carl Wulff Sr., a prominent insurance executive and board member of the Woodland Chamber of Commerce, became the prime suspect. Eventually he was indicted for murder in 1985. Charges were dismissed after his prominent San Francisco defense attorney produced two witnesses who said they had seen Dolores Wulff after her disappearance, claims that could not be verified, according to the paper.
Carl Wulff died in 2005.

The young woman, known until recently as Pecos Jane Doe, checked into the Ropers Motel with an unknown male companion, using the names, Mr. and Mrs. Russell Battoun. Hours later, a hotel employee found the woman’s body in the hotel pool. As the woman was being taken away in an ambulance, her companion checked out of the hotel and was never seen again.
More than 50 years later, Pecos Police Department Chief Lisa Tarango, continued the search for Pecos Jane Doe’s true identity. The victim is buried with a gravestone marked, "Unknown Girl Drowned July 5, 1966" and agency officials have continued to visit her grave and bring flowers.
Othram reached out to the Pecos Police Department in early 2020 to help identify the woman using advanced DNA testing. I did not catch the other day that she and her family were from Kansas and she disappeared from there and this happened in Texas. Considering the year and that it was different states, probably why the two were never put together...?

It was an old case, and most likely never uploaded to a database in present time. I can't even imagine all the cases on file collecting dust in old, physical archives across the US, or all the files gone forever due to purging.
