Search on for 2-year-old Oregon boy who disappeared while playing in front yard

Authorities in Oregon are searching for a 2-year-old boy last seen playing in his home's front yard but out of sight of his parents, the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office says.

Dane Paulsen was reported missing around 4:25 p.m. Saturday, the office said in a statement on social media.

Members of the sheriff's office and fire and police agencies searched the property and surrounding areas on foot and with drones with thermal imaging equipment Saturday, the office said.

On Sunday, search and rescue teams were conducting methodical searches of an area north of the small city of Siletz, near the Siletz River, using divers, drones, dogs and watercraft, the sheriff's office said. Volunteers who wanted to help were urged to stay out of the main search area.

Almost 300 people were involved in the search, the sheriff's office said.

As of Sunday evening, 382 acres had been searched and 283 miles covered, the office noted.

A vehicle and male driver Dane's parents didn't know who were spotted near Dane's home around the time he was last seen were found and were "no longer a point of interest," the office said Sunday evening.

The office said an Amber Alert hasn't been issued because Dane's "disappearance does not meet the criteria to use the Amber Alert system," adding that, "There is no evidence at this time to suggest criminal actions are involved in this incident."

"Dane is friendly and fearless, and is comfortable around strangers and water, but cannot swim. Dane is known to love water and vehicles," the sheriff's office pointed out.

Search drags on for missing Oregon toddler Dane Paulsen
Crews are still in search of a missing toddler, Dane Paulsen, 10 days since his disappearance.

A spokesperson with the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office tells KATU, “We are working on another update that will be shared later [Monday] to let the community know the search for Dane is ongoing.”

The Paulsen family hasn’t responded to KATU’s requests for questions, or more pictures to share of the missing 2-year-old. But on Sunday, Dane’s mom, Chamet, posted to her Facebook page asking people to keep an eye out for a “white van” saying, “If anyone has dash cams trail, cams, or security cameras up and down the Siletz River Road there is a white van in question that may be involved.”

KATU reached out to the sheriff’s office about the white van. A spokesperson said, “At this time, we do not have any evidence that suggests a white van reported to be in the area two weeks before Dane’s disappearance is related.”

Search for Dane Paulsen Update - Search Continues (3/10/25 - 4pm Update)

The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office and partnering agencies are continuing search operations for Dane Paulsen.

Ongoing search and investigation activities:

• Investigators continue to follow up on leads they discover in addition to informational tips from the community.

• Daily water searches utilizing watercraft with specialized equipment and trained personnel will continue until further notice.

Answering some common questions:

• We have received information regarding a white van seen in the area two weeks before Dane’s disappearance. At this time, we do not have evidence linking this vehicle to the ongoing search and investigation.

• We will be providing updates as significant information becomes available. This means we will not be providing daily updates. New information or major updates will be shared through the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office FlashAlert (Lincoln Co. Sheriff's Office News via Flashalert.net) and Facebook page.

• Though the land within the search area has been thoroughly combed, we cannot guarantee the areas are clear. Even with specialized equipment and search K9s, it is possible to miss a small child that may be hidden by thick brush or other visual impairments.

• Due to the thorough coverage of the surrounding area and information provided by investigators and evidence from searchers with specialized training and equipment, search efforts are concentrated on the Siletz River.

• Highly trained personal and specialized equipment remain imperative to this search. Read more about some of the specialized personal and equipment cited in our earlier releases: March 5, 2025 Media Release (https://www.co.lincoln.or.us/Admin/...45pm-Investigation-Update-on-Dane-Paulsen-PDF) and March 4, 2025 Talking Points from Community Update (https://www.co.lincoln.or.us/Admin/...-Points-from-Community-and-Media-Briefing-PDF).

• Some community members continue to search on their own. This is in addition to official search efforts. Searchers need permission from property owners before accessing private property. Searchers also need to prioritize safety (see safety suggestions below).

How Community Members Can Help:

• To ensure investigators receive information as quickly as possible, please submit all tips to the tip line, not through Facebook. Currently there is no evidence to suggest criminal activity in Dane’s disappearance. We still ask the public to report relevant information to the tip line: 541-265-0669. When sharing information that may help us bring Dane home, be as specific as possible. Note the time, exact location, and get clear photos or videos when possible.

• Share official updates found on the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office FlashAlert and Facebook page.

• If community members choose to continue their search (in addition to emergency responder searches), keep these things in mind:
o If you are choosing to search the river or riverbanks, wear a life jacket at all times. The Siletz River is cold and fast-moving.
o Please avoid areas with active searching by emergency responders or certified personnel.
o Do not search during the night or dark hours.
o Carry safety equipment such as first aid kit, extra water and food, whistle, flashlight, etc.
o Dress appropriately for the weather and terrain. Wear layers, bring waterproof clothes, and sturdy shoes.
o Before you set out, have a safety plan in place. Let someone know exactly where you are headed and when you will return.
o Remember that private property cannot be searched without updated permission from the owner.

Updates will be shared through FlashAlert and our Facebook page as significant updates become available.

Once again, we express empathy for Dane’s family. We also want to thank our community for their compassion and assistance. Our teams are working to bring Dane home.

What a mad world we live in. When I say mad I don't mean the definition of angry, but mean it the other way.

It's so clear from the above what all time has to be taken for--liability. Making sure no one else gets hurt. Searchers who want to help on their own wear life jackets. That they don't trespass. Etc.

Tips of a white van weeks earlier.

We want them to do their job, do it well and do it fast but (and talking generally to any case) but if big interest they deal with reporters, b.s. false tips or crazies, psychics, have grieving families to deal with, a public wanting to help, some public and tipsters having no clue and just getting in the way, no one else getting in the way of the searches or hurt... I'm sure they probably get calls from every "non profit" search type org or people with dogs...

I haven't hit a theory here yet, not enough info but I don't think it was some random abduction.

The system needs help and needs big change. They don't keep up with the times, and they should be using them and know how to deal with them but things move so slow when there are so many rules, regs, politics and administration involved.

I guess it's my morning subject and where the thoughts are with some cases lately.

They say not to post tips to FB but look to FB for updates.

They had to cover all bases in that release and all liability and they'd probably just like to have people let them do their jobs. At least a good department and bunch would, instead of having to worry about all the other b.s. Not saying all are good at their jobs everywhere, adequately staffed, trained. No idea in this one.

I don't have a leaning in this one yet but so far I don't like the details or lack of them. Not that we need to be told but seriously WHO last saw this child?? Also, I have a slight sense of some things could be red herrings but they could be well meaning, clueless tipsters as well.

Maybe I'd know more if I did things like FB but such just make it worse and one would have rabbit holes and overload.

Awww. Sad, but not unexpected.

Dammit. Just a baby. What rotten news, not that I held out much hope in this one. RIP little one.

Kids and water. We see it far too much.

Still some answers needed here. Cause of death, last time independently seen but it does seem he was not being watched and probably quickly headed for the water...At least for a few moments... So sad, tragic. Kudos to the volunteer diver offering to help.

My heart goes out to the family, what worse loss is there than a child with their life ahead. This is the first thing I saw on waking up today. Awful.

I note the family had FBI victim help, not sure I've heard of that before. Talking recently of what victim families need, what is this? Maybe more LE agencies should make use of such a resource if available?

I've seen no reason here to think this is any more than a child parents didn't have sight of for a minute, maybe more. It doesn't mean though that those answers do not still need to be provided to the public, and determined.

I think most all had little doubt here this wasn't going to have a good outcome, still waking up to the news was awful, it always is.

My heart goes out to his family who if just a moment of not watching will likely beat themselves up enough for the rest of their lives. Little has been shared here though and I still want a few more answers. As should they. That article still had an old part in it about the car seen. I trust that LE cleared that as they've stated. They need to clear anything else as well, and even share perhaps how they did with that so news stops with that. I personally don't think any stranger had a thing to do with this but in this day and age, it needs to be shown this was an accident and nothing else, and answers given.

It does seem to be only that at this point but again, a few more answers need to come.

Anyhow what awful news to wake up to. RIP Dane.

Dane Paulsen, missing 2-year-old Oregon boy, died by drowning, medical examiner says

Two days after a volunteer diver recovered the body of Dane Paulsen from Oregon’s Siletz River, officials confirmed the 2-year-old died by drowning.

On Thursday, the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office confirmed a medical examiner had performed an autopsy on the boy on Wednesday and that he died by drowning. The examiner found no additional trauma to the boy’s body, and no criminal charges have been filed in his death.

I wonder if news can now quit and leave out the guy and car, probably not, it's in every single article. I get and want facts and it of course did come up in the beginning so know why it's in articles still when they have parts that have the original "story".

Drowning doesn't prove no foul play, anyone can throw a small child in water.

However, I think this was just tragic with none of the above. At least I've seen no reason to think so but then I've not looked elsewhere as I often say, maybe if I did, I'd think otherwise. Didn't see any reason though in this one the little I know to think it was anything other than a tragic accident and not being watched closely.

Poor baby, I'm glad he's been found, even though the outcome wasn't a good one.
