Danny Masterson Charged with Three Counts of Rape "By Force or Fear"

Actor Danny Masterson has long been accused of acts of sexual violence, and on Wednesday the That ’70s Show actor was finally arrested after being charged with the rapes of three women in separate incidents dating back to 2001 and 2003.

Los Angeles County District Attorney Jackie Lacey's office charged the 44-year-old with three counts of "rape by force or fear." "If convicted as charged, the defendant faces a possible maximum sentence of 45 years to life in state prison," the district attorney's office said in a statement.

The complaint accuses him of raping a 23-year-old woman in 2001. He is also charged with committing two other assaults in 2003, one against a 28-year-old woman in April, and another against a 23-year-old woman between October and December of that year.

The case will be prosecuted by Deputy District Attorney Reinhold Mueller of the Sex Crimes Division, who stated that all of the alleged rapes occurred at the actor's Hollywood Hills home.

Prosecutors noted that they declined to file sexual assault charges against Masterson in two other cases, "one for insufficient evidence and the other based upon the statute of limitations for the crime alleged."

Masterson has been held on $3.3 million bail. He is represented by defense attorney Thomas Mesereau, who previously represented Bill Cosby, Michael Jackson and Mike Tyson against sex crime charges. In a statement to the Associated Press, Mesereau insisted that Masterson is innocent.

“We’re confident that he will be exonerated when all the evidence finally comes to light and witnesses have the opportunity to testify," the attorney said. “Obviously, Mr. Masterson and his wife are in complete shock considering that these nearly 20-year old allegations are suddenly resulting in charges being filed, but they and their family are comforted knowing that ultimately the truth will come out,” Mesereau said. “The people who know Mr. Masterson know his character and know the allegations to be false.”

The criminal complaint doesn't name the victims, but the timeline of the accusations matches those of four women who accused Masterson of sexual assault in 2016 and 2017 as part of the #MeToo movement. Last year, they sued Masterson, along with the Church of Scientology, to which he belongs, alleging that the powerful and secretive organization stalked and intimidated them for coming forward with their police reports. Masterson and Scientology officials all denied wrongdoing.

Masterson responded to the suit with a statement: “This is beyond ridiculous. I’m not going to fight my ex-girlfriend in the media like she’s been baiting me to do for more than two years. I will beat her in court—and look forward to it because the public will finally be able [to] learn the truth and see how I’ve been railroaded by this woman. And once her lawsuit is thrown out, I intend to sue her and the others who jumped on the bandwagon for the damage they caused me and my family.”

In the lawsuit, the women each claim Masterson forced himself on them or took advantage of them when they were intoxicated and unable to consent.

Masterson is set to be arraigned on Sept. 18.

I can't load the article but it is probably on my end. Going by the headline only, sounds outrageous. They claim reason for fear of the church and they are being told they have to go through mediation there.

Nothing like authorizing what appears to be a cult to most of us to have power over this. Disturbing.

Again, I could not read the article so I am just going by the headline which I generally don't do.
On Wednesday, Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Steven Kleifield ruled that the harassment complaint from Chrissie Carnell Bixler, her husband, musician Cedric Bixler-Zavala, Marie Bobette Riales and two Jane Does must be settled by the Church in "religious arbitration," since an arbitration agreement already exists among the parties that compels disputes to be handled by the Church of Scientology.

✂️

A decision was not made on the claims by Bobette Riales, who was not a member of the church and thus not subject to the arbitration agreement.

A status conference on the arbitration was set by the court for June 30.

It's also published in this article. See if you can open this one.

I was able to, thank you so much. I should have thought to look up another article but I brought in the New Year, that's my excuse for being fuzzy today...

While I get that I guess they are enforcing a "contract" so to speak, not sure of the law but I assume that is what they are doing, I think when harassed after reporting to authorities that it would negate that? I am thinking in terms of fairness not the "law"... It's like sending an abused victim back to the hands of the abuser and then the harassers... Of course that is if she is victim, I realize nothing is concluded.

It makes me think of when someone KNOWS the system they are in or of previous people, they are not going to report or do arbitration there... It makes me think of Fort Hood and Vanessa Guillen. You are taught and told this is the process and some say this is what you are to do and can trust it, ha. She knew not to report it to superiors... And yet still, look what happened...

And that's a military base and she worked there. Scientology does not even compare to being the same thing...

I don't know and since it is going to be under the eyes of the public or at least the court most likely, I am sure this arbitration will look all nicey, nicey...

Just to throw this out there, the arbritration is regarding the 'civil' case only which is for the stalking charges. The criminal case regarding the rape charges is still on the docket for arraignment on 2021-01-06.

*(I hope that makes sense.)

I think I caught that or at least part of it now that you mention it. It does make sense because criminal charges should be criminal charges imo and handled by LE, etc.

If I recall, to my knowledge, he has not had to show at a hearing yet, not a motion or status hearing. I would hope and think he would be expected to be at the preliminary, odd to me that would have to be said or pointed out to him or anyone.

At his preliminary hearing scheduled to begin Tuesday morning, prosecutors say they will present evidence that he raped a 23-year-old woman sometime in 2001, a 28-year-old woman in April of 2003, and a 23-year-old woman between October and December of 2003. Prosecutors have said all of the attacks happened in his home.

Jury says it's deadlocked in Danny Masterson rape trial

Jurors at the rape trial of "That '70s Show" star Danny Masterson said Friday that they are deadlocked, but a judge told them they have not deliberated long enough for her to declare a mistrial.

The jury told Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Charlaine Olmedo that after nearly three days of deliberations, they could not reach a unanimous verdict on any of the three rape counts against the actor.

I wonder what Scientology is doing to or for the jurors refusing to convict.
