Decomposing bodies found at Indiana funeral home

More mystery ashes. I would bet you they were using those unidentified cremains and just parceling them out willy nilly.

Surely some serious charges are pending.

New lawsuit filed against Jeffersonville funeral home where bodies, cremated remains were found

At least 20 families filed a civil lawsuit against the funeral home's director, Randy Lankford. The latest lawsuit was filed Monday in Jefferson Circuit Court by Ichiro Vance.

While Vance paid for Lankford's services, he still doesn't know where his mother's remains are. In the lawsuit, he calls the funeral home's actions "negligent" and "outrageous." He's asking a judge to make Lankford pay up for emotional distress and breaking a signed contract that stated the funeral home would properly prepare Chiba's body for burial or cremation.

No specific monetary amount is listed in the lawsuit.

Lankford is charged with six counts of theft related to the mishandling of remains and had his license to operate a funeral home suspended in August. Clark County Prosecutor Jeremy Mull said more charges are likely. Lankford is scheduled to go to trial in February.

This whole thing is disgusting. Complete disregard for the deceased. That a funeral home who is suppose to have feelings, Sympathy and respect would do this is unbelievable. That poor guy. I can't imagine his mental anguish from that. You want their cremains to keep. Then you have nothing. Like they didn't exist. My aunt was like that, By her husband. Scattered, No headstone. Nothing. That was bad enough. But that?! If that had been my mom...Well, They would be calling 911.

Board revokes license of Jeffersonville funeral home owner who stored decomposing bodies

The Indiana State Board of Funeral and Cemetery Service permanently revoked the license of Randy Lankford, owner of Lankford Funeral and Home and Family Center in Jeffersonville, Indiana, in early August after police found dozens of decomposing bodies stored at the facility in 2022.

The board voted unanimously for the revocation during a meeting on Aug. 3, according to a release from the Office of the Indiana Attorney General.

“This is one of the most egregious cases our office has seen in recent times,” Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita said. “I’m proud that we were able to work together with local law enforcement to hold Mr. Lankford accountable and make sure he can never practice another funeral service in Indiana ever again.”

Lankford and the funeral home were charged with professional incompetence, failure to dispose of 31 bodies in a timely manner, storing cremains at the facility beyond the legally permitted period and related charges, the release stated.

Lankford pleaded guilty in Clark County Circuit Court to more than 40 felony theft charges and accepted a plea deal in May, per previous reporting. He was also ordered to pay restitution totaling $46,000 to 53 families.
