Texas father still looking for answers, justice in 2010 death of Hailey Dunn

The disappearance of 13-year-old middle school student Hailey Dunn in Colorado City hits its nine-year anniversary this month with her father, Clint Dunn, still looking for answers.

"I feel like I'm left in the darkness because law enforcement is not communicating with me at all," said Clint Dunn, speaking via telephone this week. "... This needs to move forward."

Hailey's death remains unsolved, though her remains were found in 2013 in Scurry County.

Investigators named Shawn Adkins, the live-in boyfriend of Hailey's mother, Billie Jean Dunn, at the time of the teen's disappearance, the primary person of interest, according to Reporter-News archives. He has not been charged with a crime in the case.

Clint Dunn said Thursday that law enforcement officials had indicated to him that when a body was found, an arrest would be made.

"I want to know why that hasn't happened and who do I need to get in here to try to help," he said.

Clint Dunn has secured a private investigator, he said, and as tips are received, they are passed on to authorities.

But return replies are few, if any, he said.

"We don't even know who's got the case right now," he said. "... We've called everybody — the FBI, the Texas Rangers, (an investigator) that was over the case for so long in Scurry County. ... I just want to know why they haven't brought this to trial yet. Why hasn't there been a court date?"

It's pretty dam*ed clear when prosecutors have to release someone charged and dismiss those charges just who screwed up. Adkins is laughing at it all and skipping merrily down the street. Can you even imagine what that does to a victim's family member?

They don't just have simple egg on their faces in this one, it is well beyond that.

What kid? Wrong case, I think.

Isn't this the 13 year old girl killed by stabbing and the mom washed his pants? I guess not.

Definitely not. That case is from 2 years ago and he plead.

Hailey's case is from 2010 and involves her stepfather.

No that murderer was sentenced. And it was a Florida case, not Texas. The man released in this one is an older adult, not a kid like Trystan Bailey's killer Aidan Fucci.

This is Shawn Adkins and victim Hailey Dunn. Maybe you are mixing up Hailey and Bailey although one is a first name of one and the other a last name of the other. Not sure how you came up with this one as NONE of the things are the same other than for a 13 year old girl and if you looked at all it happened in 2010 as the thread title says, not in the 2020s as the one you are thinking of. Different states, ages of killers and more. This man has not been tried, the other one has already been sentenced and not sure how you missed that.

I'll not pick on you so be thankful but boy I sure could go to town with this one and how you could have missed so many differences... And the fact the other was already sentenced.

Mime lol.

I don't think LE should get to sit in silence and have the public or victim's families wondering if if ANYTHING is even going on or being done. The public tends to think or wonder and rightfully so if sh*t is being shoved under the rug and those in charge hope forgotten OR are they hard at work. You at least come out and assure of that. They need to learn that no news leads to distrust. Imo.
MAYBE they are working hard on it but then SAY SO.
Hi @Mel70 :hugs: no time here either. maybe in the next lifetime if there is such a thing.

Slain teen Hailey Dunn would be 27, here’s what we know about her death:

It’s been a “nightmare” seemingly without end for more than a decade for Clinton Dunn and his children; a nightmare that is never far from their minds, especially on days like today as they celebrate what would have been Hailey Dunn’s 27th birthday.

“It would be cruel for us to simply wish her a ‘Happy Birthday in Heaven’ without acknowledging why she isn’t here to celebrate this special day with her loved ones. No good comes from pretending her life wasn’t stolen. No good comes from moving on without seeking justice for this beautiful girl. To do so would be further insult to the short life she lived, full of love and laughter, jokes and pranks, Guitar Hero and singing with her friends and family. No good comes from ignoring the “why”. The only way we can ever begin to make this right is to guarantee justice for this beautiful little girl. Hailey, you are loved, and you are missed. Your sisters and Daddy include you every day. Because of them, you will never be forgotten, and they will advocate for your justice every day until it is received.”

In June of 2023, after spending two years in jail awaiting trial, Adkins was released from custody.

Documents released at the time showed that the case was dropped without prejudice. This means the state can re-file the charges against Adkins at any time.

“To be clear, the prosecution views (Adkins) as the primary suspect in the Hailey Dunn murder,” a motion to dismiss read.

However, levying charges against Adkins again would require more work from law enforcement agencies; the same people who dropped the ball on multiple occasions, according to the Dunn family.

According to court documents, that particular piece of evidence involved a “soil analysis” using Near Infrared Spectroscopy and found that soil collected from Adkins’ work boots “had a high degree of chemical similarity” with soil samples collected from the site where the teen’s remains were found. Clinton said that test came back a 94-95% match.

However, court documents showed that the soil was also sent to the Federal Bureau of Investigation for analysis using a different method. Prosecutors said that analysis determined that the soil samples did not match. Scientists with the FBI said that NIRS testing is not a “methodology sanctioned by the forensic community for soil analysis and… should not be relied on in a criminal trial”.

Additionally, when Hailey’s body was found in 2013, a forensic anthropologist found blunt force injuries to her skull and determined the injuries had been inflicted at or near the time of death and likely resulted in significant bleeding. While multiple searches of the house were conducted by law enforcement, there wasn’t any forensic testing done in the house in the days following Hailey’s disappearance so there’s no evidence to test to see if blood was present in the home at the time.

Also, multiple searches of Adkins’ car, as well as the location in Scurry County, were conducted; however, none of the evidence collected was ever forensically tested, court records show.

“Before this case proceeds to trial, that evidence should be thoroughly tested to determine if it has any value”, the motion read.

Another piece of evidence was the cell records and cell tower records of Hailey and Adkins. An analysis of these records showed that on December 27, 2010, Hailey sent a text at 2:16 p.m. and 2:27 p.m. At the same time, Adkins’s cell connected to a cell tower in Big Spring at 1:53 p.m. and again at 2:40 p.m. Adkins also took a call at 2:56 p.m. which connected to a cell tower along I-20 east of Big Spring but west of Colorado City. A minute later, an incoming call to Hailey’s cell phone connected to a cell tower in Colorado City. These facts show that Hailey MIGHT have been alive before 2:57 pm on December 27.

There are also issues with the timeline. The day before, on December 26, Hailey’s brother spent the night with two friends and returned home on December 27 at about 5 p.m. When he got there, according to court documents, he talked to Adkins, and Hailey was not there. At 6 p.m., Adkins left and picked up Hailey’s mother from work in Snyder. Adkins wasn’t alone again until the following morning.

With that timeline in mind, court documents said that if Hailey was alive when Adkins arrived at home, he would have been alone with Hailey for at most about two hours from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. This would mean Adkins would have had to kill her, clean up any blood and other incriminating evidence in the home and hide her body in a relatively short amount of time. While not impossible, that timeline could be a challenge for prosecutors especially when considering the overall lack of evidence in the case.

The motion to dismiss the charges against Adkins stated that there is no direct eyewitness to Hailey’s murder, nor any known current forensic science evidence directly linking Adkins to the murder. Because of this, “the current state of the evidence is not sufficient for the prosecution to proceed to trial.”

Prosecutors said that additional investigation is needed, but has that been done? We don’t know because investigators have been notoriously tight lipped about the case.

Despite all the grief and unanswered questions, Clinton and his children have continued to fight for justice for the slain teen.

In a recent podcast, Clinton talked with Grieving Our Babies about his daughter and all the unanswered questions that still remain. You can listen to that podcast here, or following this Facebook page as the search for answers continues.

I cannot imagine being her siblings and her father.

They did don't even test things from the home and so much more?

I did a quick refresh to ensure I have the right case I mind by skimming just the first page and I do.

Justice does not bring a victim back but just from my experience I can say, a need for justice is almost a living breathing thing for a family. I understand it completely. I also know of one family in a big case here who did not feel that need and to each their own but I found that hard to identify with. I won't name them but a very unusual response compared to the other sets of parents in the case, which I think hints enough at who I mean. I mean I could name them, nothing wrong with it, no secret but my point is it is a very human need in such a situation. And of course some families never get justice or if they do, not satisfactory justice.

It almost halts all else in life until that is seen through. That's my experience anyhow. It's mortal, it's normal, it is an extreme need and it's human. imo. And it was what we see in families in almost every single case (unless of course by one that may be the perp).

I hate to hate on investigators here but WHAT is going on? Did they have nothing to test? Did they have things to test and they came back with the wrong results? WHY is this family not being informed or getting any answers since the ball had to be dropped here??!! This is 14 years of no justice for this child or her family!! And this man free as a bird. And mom likely should have had more as well against her and time to serve.

If you don't have anything or enough, own up to it to the family. If you do but are awaiting something, say so. To the family at least. We knew that much.

Heart goes out to the family here and this unfair tragedy. RIP Hailey. People still care. And LE needs to step up and give some answers or refile some charges. Imo. They for SURE need to be explaining to the innocent members of her family if not the public.

Why so they keep insisting there would be blood to clean up? Not all deaths create blood that would take time to clean up.

Yeah it is maddening isn't it... The tides of today... Nowadays...

Right or wrong they apparently don't feel they have enough..

Or aren't going to risk it.

I know I talk of this too much at times but if our sent out more extensive autopsy on the skull had not come back the way it had, we would have had no case or they would not have proceeded. It all hinged on that... We at least were told and knew that... What can I even say about that, it came back the right way, but it was also the devastating way in knowing exactly what happened and how bad... What do you wish for in such a situation... No winning... Because it is about that...

It does sound like here though that they did not do what they should have...

Yes things like strangulation or a major head injury leave no blood necessarily.

But it has gone way overboard with what LE did not do, and exculpatory evidence which has gone way beyond logic and more.

Is anyone seeing this. It's getting beyond ridiculous...

That said, not fresh enough on this one to be sure of anything but LE has to do everything and go beyond, they even need to check out space aliens because that is how it is now... the better sure the heck make sure they checked it out and EXCLUDED that possibility. Or it possibly could be something that could help the defense and is exculpatory if the aliens did it and they didn't make sure... That is how ridiculous it has gotten...

I don't expect any response lol.

Very sad for the siblings and dad in this family..

The fact they didn’t do any forensic testing at the house just makes me so mad. That’s just the beginning. I better not get started.

Wow. I knew I had a long hard day, insanely busy at work the last few, but I guess I can't follow much tonight. I will wait for others to fill me in here who get it.

I guess LE has a major strategy all these years later.

Like I'm going to hit a link in something that is far from clear and seems like something else.

Again, I'll wait to see what admins know of it or think of it.
