JPD chief gives update after mother, child killed
Jackson's police chief addressed the media about the killing of a Louisiana mother and her 3-year-old child.
Daniel Callihan, 36, is accused of killing Callie Brunett, 35, in Louisiana and abducting her two children. Authorities say he took them to Boozier Drive in Jackson where he killed Brunett’s 3-year-old daughter.
While leaving Jackson Police Headquarters Thursday, Callihan admitted to the crimes he’s charged with.
"I have no reason for what I did. All I want to say is that I was sober and only on Lexapro and I'm diagnosed with borderline multiple personality disorder," said Callahan.
A woman was also arrested in the case. Both Callihan and Victoria Cox face murder and sexual battery charges. During an initial court appearance Monday, a Hinds County Municipal Court judge denied bond for Cox for the murder charge and granted a $500,000 bond for the sexual battery charge.
Wade said the crime scene on Boozier Drive took three days to process. He believes Callihan was familiar with the area, because it is not a street one would normally go down since it is a dead end. On the property, Wade said small cages as well as wired enclosures were found which were possible signs of a human trafficking operation.
"I think if there was a case that definitely would rise to the level of the death penalty, this should be it, because I still have imprinted in my head the site of(the little girl) in the woods dead," Wade said.
The chief of police said he believed the 3-year-old girl was suffocated, but a medical examiner would have to make that determination.
The police chief said there are more questions than answers in this case, for instance, why come to Jackson from Louisiana?
"There were so many places you could have stopped. There were so many places you could have went to, east and west, but you came here," Wade said.
The FBI has taken the lead on the investigation.
Dixie Hemphill said her brother, Daniel Callihan, has been troubled his entire life and is a mastermind at crime. She says that his actions against Brunett’s family were horrific. She says her brother dated Brunett 13 years ago.
"I met her kids twice…I feel so bad for parents just like why," Hemphill said.
Hemphill says she has gone to the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation and the Lincoln Sheriff’s Department regarding her brother’s behavior more than a year ago.
She said Callihan once confessed to her that he molested a minor and he also took part in the death of a reported missing man.
She said they did not take her seriously.
"I just wanted someone to take us serious because look what happened and Lincoln County sheriff said that there was no merit to him killing anyone but then diagnose him with schizophrenia and let him walk out of those doors," said Hemphill.
She said that Callihan had goals of pursuing a life like his father.
"He was classified as a serial killer and we even tried to tell MBI about this that he wanted to be a prodigy of his dad and he was writing his own book except he was going to succeed his dad and he has," Hemphill said.
Lincoln County Sheriff said they did not ignore Hemphill's warnings.
"There was an allegation made against him on a sexual battery case. That case was investigated and presented to a grand jury … The grand jury did not indict him for any of those charges," said Sheriff Steve Rushing.
He says there was just not enough evidence to indict Callihan on these allegations.
