UPDATE | 2-year-old’s alleged kidnapping ‘cannot be verified,’ DeKalb police say

DeKalb County police need help locating a 2-year-old boy who has been missing since early Thursday morning.

J’Asiah Mitchell was allegedly kidnapped from an area near the 3300 block of Flat Shoals Road, police said. The area is in Panthersville, between I-20 and the southeast side of I-285. The time of the incident was not disclosed.

“Information surrounding the details of the reported kidnapping cannot be verified, so we are unable to release anything further,” a police spokesperson said Thursday afternoon. “We are diligently working to find J’Asiah and will continue to send updates as they become available.”

The boy was last seen wearing Buzz Lightyear pajamas, officials said. His mother, Asia Mitchell, told Channel 2 Action news that J’Asiah was staying with his father Wednesday night when he was taken during an armed robbery. Police have not confirmed that information.

His alleged abductor was driving a black sedan, but the make, model and tag number are unknown, the news station reported.

“I’ve been up crying, worrying. I’ve been praying,” Asia Mitchell said of her only child.

Police said they contacted the GBI about releasing an Amber Alert, known as a Levi’s Call in Georgia, but were told “this incident did not meet the criteria.”

Despite an armed robbery and a black "sedan" they can't issue an Amber Alert.

Is this possible, the scenario? Of course. Who here thinks it likely that's what happened? I don't.

Yet another BABY. A baby whose parent(s) are lying or one is and the other buys it (apparently). Hang on though, maybe I'm wrong, Carlee Russell may well have been out walking today and seen this child. My hope for this world goes down the tubes further every single day. Evil, selfish, immature, stupid, beyond stupid. Yet I wake up and maintain hope somehow. And then more and new ones...!

I don't know and will eat my words if wrong but clearly LE isn't buying it.

Most likely yet another one killed by a parent or of which both parents are involved in the murder and/or cover up. I skimmed the posts.

I have no doubt he is dead. I hope I'm wrong.

Police say DeKalb 2-year-old not kidnapped during armed robbery, still missing

DeKalb County Police Department are searching for a child who was originally reported to have been kidnapped at gunpoint. They now say that did not happen, but the child is still missing.

Just after 8:15 p.m., police say they had determined there was no kidnapping. They say they are now working through inconsistencies in the reporting of the kidnapping.

The father initially said someone took the boy from him as he was stopped at a stop sign, but police say they can’t verify his story.
Investigators have not commented on any suspects or what led up to the boy’s disappearance.

This family is searching the East Point apartment complex which is the last place they knew J’Asiah Mitchell was.

His mother, Asia Mitchell, said her son was with his father when she got a call from the child’s father, who claimed he had been robbed and that the gunmen took J’Asiah.

“Leaving out of a neighborhood and he was leaving, like stopping at the stop sign or whatever, like that, and a car pulled out in front of him at gunpoint and took my baby, because they couldn’t take anything from him. That’s the story that he and his mom are telling me,” Asia Mitchell said.

The family doesn’t believe that story and the police don’t either.

It sounded suspicious to me from the beginning. What armed robbers abduct children. Unless it's part of the plan. Someone wealthy is kidnapped. Ransom. There is nothing like that here. They have no reason to kidnap a child. A robber robs. I don't buy their story. It just sounds wrong to me.

And his MOM is telling the story too. Hopefully it is a custody thing and he is alive or this was pulled to worry his mother but I don't think so. Only thing I can think of though to have hope he is alive.

Smacks a whole lot more like a cover up of wrongdoing. And his mom is part of it or she BUYS IT?? Duh woman!

And the stories are usually stupid and can't be corroborated but this one is particularly dumb.

I haven't even accepted yet we have another dead baby here but I think we do even though I am not letting it "in" to think about, I am avoiding it by focusing on his stupidity.

I did not get the impression that the mother believes the story. I think they (her and her mom) are just repeating what they were told had happened. The wording in the article isn't the best but I think it's DAD's mom that is also saying the story, not J'asiah's mom.

It was said that J'asiah was staying with dad Wednesday night. I'm curious if he was there ONLY Wednesday night or if he had been there several days or longer.

Police in Georgia say man lied about what happened to his missing 2-year-old son

A Georgia father is facing charges after police say he lied about what happened to his missing 2-year-old son.

By Thursday night, authorities had charged Artavious North, 23, for false statements and false report of a crime.

Investigators say they know J'asiah was not kidnapped. However, the whereabouts of the child remain unknown.

"The investigation is fluid and evolving," DCP posted on their Facebook page. "We are working with federal state and local law enforcement partners to follow up on all available leads. Our first priority remains in locating J’asiah."

UPDATE: Crews draining pond at apartment complex after father claimed 2-year-old was kidnapped

Police are now draining a pond at an East Point apartment complex after a 2-year-old boy was reportedly kidnapped by his father in DeKalb County earlier this week.

The child’s father, 23-year-old Artravious North, has since been arrested.

Authorities added that the last place J’Asiah Mitchell was seen was an the same apartment complex in East Point where crews are draining the pond. DeKalb County police said East Point police have taken over the search.

Yeah I took it to be the dad's mother/grandma too.

Sadly not surprised. Story was outlandish from the beginning.

Poor little boy. His poor mother.

I take it the gf of dad is NOT the mother right? I wonder what her part, if any, was in this. I also wonder if there were other children in the home and if so, if they have been taken.

Grandfather of missing DeKalb toddler calls search surreal, asks for help in finding him

As the search for a missing DeKalb County toddler stretches through a second day, loved ones are fearing the worst.

East Point Police Department officers were actively searching for missing 2-year-old J'Asiah Mitchell Friday. The toddler has been missing since Wednesday night.

Authorities started draining a pond at the Elite at Lakeview Apartments in East Point in an effort to leave no stone unturned. Police previously stressed there was no specific information to believe the toddler would be found in the pond - just that they are exhausting all efforts.

"We are following all leads as it pertains to this case," police said in a statement.

Their efforts continued through the evening. 11Alive spotted an East Point Police crime scene unit van around 9 p.m.

Family joined investigators earlier in the day at the complex, desperate for updates.

"Somebody's got some answers, just please say something," J'Asiah's grandfather Jonathan Wyatt pleaded Friday.

Search continues for missing 2-year-old boy in East Point; here's what led to search

The search continued Saturday morning for a 2-year-old DeKalb boy who has disappeared.

At this time, efforts are being made to drain a pond near where the boy lived with his father, who has been arrested in connection to the boy's disappearance.

On Saturday morning, it appeared that the pond is still mostly full.

North was also denied bond on Saturday.

I wonder how big this pond is, I would have thought that they'd have it drained by now.

Are we to guess dad (and his gf aren't providing answers as to where he is. Of course he's not. I'm not saying gf knows or was home, it hasn't been said has it other than he lived with one and the boy was with them. I't like to know was she home, did she back up the armed robbery story by him, etc.?

‘All we need is J’asiah;’ Family searches for 2-year-old who disappeared in DeKalB County while with

The search for 2-year old J’Asiah Mitchell continues as crews drain a lake in Eastpoint. It’s near where the 2-year-old’s father Artavious North lives.

Saturday night, Channel 2′s Larry Spruill, and Channel 2 Action News cameras were back at the lake off Lakeview Place in East Point and the family of J’Asiah Mitchell were also there.

“My daughter wants to look for her son, so that’s what we’re going to do. We’re going to look wherever she wants to look, wherever she wants to go. Whatever idea she comes up with and thinks she might need to go check it out, we’re right behind her,” said J’Asiah’s Grandmother Leriesa Mitchell.

J’Asiah’s grandmother Leriesa Mitchell talked to Channel 2 Action News about the situation.

“All we need is J’asiah. We don’t want nothing else. We don’t want nothing more. We just want J’Asiah,” said Lariesa.

Early Saturday, J’Asiah’s family went back to the apartment complex where North reported the kidnapping.

“We found out this apartment complex is a place where he used to hang out at. He used to bring J’Asiah out here. We talked to numerous of people who live out here. They also said they seen my grandson playing with other kids out here,” said Lariesa.

Spruill asked Lariesa how is she staying motivated, “Because I know I’m bringing my grandson home.”

Spruill also asked the grandmother, if she believes her son is still alive.

“I know he’s still alive. I know he’s still alive,” said Lariesa.

Now it's a lake rather than a pond. Maybe they've moved on to another or maybe news is getting things mixed up?

I hope she's right that he is still alive but I'm not holding my breath sadly in this one. Hoping she is right though.

Pond in East Point almost empty, no sign of missing 2-year-old J'Asiah Mitchell

On Friday, police turned their attention to nearby landfill in Griffin and began draining a pond near the apartment complex. Police haven't said specifically that they believe the boy is in the pond.

North was denied bond on Saturday.

As of early Sunday morning, the pond was almost empty and there has been no sign of the toddler.

Search expands for missing DeKalb 2-year-old after not being found in drained pond, landfill

East Point Police said in a release Friday that they were "actively searching" for a missing 2-year-old who was first reported kidnapped Wednesday night in DeKalb County.

Now over 95 hours after J'Asiah Mitchell went missing, his family is banding together Sunday night as they are currently searching four different spots in hopes that they will find their beloved little boy.

On Friday afternoon, authorities started draining a pond at the Elite at Lakeview Apartments in East Point. However, on Sunday afternoon, family confirmed to 11Alive that the boy had not been found inside the pond after it was drained by officials. It's the same apartment complex that J'Asiah was staying with his dad.

Draining efforts started around 4 p.m. As of 9 p.m. Friday, water was receding but the pond was not yet empty. In an update on Sunday around 6 p.m., the pond had been drained but there was no sign of J'Asiah.

Authorities were also searching for J'Asiah at a landfill in Griffin, but 11Alive learned late Sunday afternoon that the search had turned out unsuccessful.

I wondered if they'd also got on dumpsters and landfills. Also have they gotten warrants for cell phones and any GPS on any vehicle he may have had and gathering all surveillance they can to track dad's movements, etc. I imagine that is going on or in the works...
