DeKalb County police are searching for a child they say was kidnapped.

Authorities said they are looking for 2-year-old J’asiah Deon Mitchell, who was kidnapped Wednesday around 11:23 p.m. in the 3300 block of Flat Shoals Road. The child’s family told police he was taken during an armed robbery.

Police said Mitchell’s alleged kidnapper is driving a black sedan. The make, model and tag of the car are unknown.

Mitchell was last seen wearing Buzz Lightyear pajamas.

Father considered person of interest in DeKalb County missing toddler case, police say

The father of a missing DeKalb County toddler is a person of interest in his son’s disappearance, according to the East Point Police Department.

J’Asiah Mitchell, North’s 2-year-old son, has been missing since last Wednesday.

North was arrested for false statements and false report of a crime. He is accused of falsely reporting his son’s kidnapping during an alleged armed robbery at a Decatur apartment complex on Aug 16.

East Point Police said there are still active searches underway at undisclosed locations.

“Right now, we’re going back, making sure that we checked every box in working this case. We believe we have taken this case seriously from the minute that we were contacted by the DeKalb County Police Department. Right now, working as fast as we can with the resources that we have,” said Deputy Chief Russell Popham.

Popham said the search now involves several outside multi-law enforcement agencies.

Not sure what kind of apt. complex this is but if it is anywhere near a typical one, claiming a false armed robbery was a really stupid story. I mean like there's armed men in the hallway pounding on or breaking down someone's door? And no one noticed I'm guessing, like other neighbors... Even aside from that, it sounded ludicrous from the start. Armed robbers purpose generally would not to be to take a child or be saddled with one. Even accounting for all the talk these days of sex trafficking, etc., they want YOUR child so badly they resort to means where they would be likely to be noticed, caught, etc. Likewise some gang or bunch that are doing such to commit robberies I don't think are going to be doing it to take a child when their purpose is to rob. Damned dumb story if you ask me. Add to that they take some two year old but dad who was present is alive and well and can tell about it. MORON.

We've seen a number of cases even where someone stole a car and later realized there was a child in a car seat in the back seat and they leave the child off in a panic. Because the purpose is to take the car and not have everyone from local to the feds after them and to make HUGE news which a car wouldn't. IT just isn't their PURPOSE.
He went too fantastic and is an idiot. I'm glad he did though because it probably was minutes before it smelled to LE.

I'd like to know if the gf was home or corroborated his story or if she, doing the right thing, told LE he was full of sh*t. Or do we have involvement? Not a word on what to believe there yet.

This poor child. In this one from the first mention I figured he is dead because of the ridiculous story. There'd be no need for a grandiose and ridiculous lie if he wasn't. Normally I'd wait in a case for more details, at least a few posts and further news but not here. It may well be the fastest I've ever decided that. I have others that I am quick to suspect the story but wait for a bit more info. Not here. Armed robbers who take one little boy and nothing else and leave dad alive and well to tell about it. NO.

Missing 2-year-old in DeKalb County | Full timeline

A search continued over the weekend and entered its sixth day on Tuesday for a two-year-old boy missing out of DeKalb County.

The case has taken several turns since J'Asiah Mitchell was first reported missing last Wednesday night, setting off search efforts.

  • Wednesday night, August 16:
J'Asiah is first reported missing by his father, Artavious North, who claimed the child was kidnapped during an armed robbery.
  • Thursday morning, August 17:
DeKalb County Police send out a kidnapping alert, asking for the for the public's help. Later in the day, police mention that they requested an Amber Alert from the GBI but claim the disappearance did not meet the criteria.
Specifically, GBI said it was “lacking enough descriptive information about the abductor/vehicle. Agents did assist with getting the media advisory out." The initial media advisory just listed a "Black Sedan".
  • Thursday afternoon, August 17:
DeKalb County Police release an update stating that the kidnapping can no longer be verified. Shortly after, the family posts about heading to the Lakeview Apartments in East Point to search. They are joined by East Point Police, DeKalb Police and game wardens, searching buildings and surrounding woods.
  • Thursday night, August 17:
DeKalb County Jail records show the child's father was booked and charged with false statements and false report of a crime.
Police later provide an update, saying J'Asiah's father was arrested after making false reports to police that he was robbed at gunpoint and the toddler was kidnapped. Police said that was all made up.
Bags of evidence were taken from the East Point complex Thursday night. It's not clear, though, how any of that evidence might fit into the case.
  • Friday, August 18:
East Point Police now take over the investigation. Crews begin searching a Griffin landfill as well as a lake by the apartment complex from the day before. The father had been staying there, according to the child's mother. Officers note that these are not necessarily leads but rather they are "trying everything and checking off boxes."
  • Saturday, August 19:
Artavious North has a magistrate court appearance where he is denied bond.
  • Monday, August 21:
East Point Police confirm that North is the only person of interest in the case, at this time. They also confirm that nothing was found in the lake after taking multiple days to drain it. Officers said they are working with other agencies, as well as interviewing new people and those previously interviewed.

Outraged. Imagine this due with his false story. I bet it came crumbling apart immediately. You had a gun to your head in an armed robbery? What kind of gun? How many people? What were the other guys doing while one had a gun to your head? What is it they were after that was so big as to do an armed robbery? What do you have that would have brought them to your apartment? Gold? And they took your son? Why? How did they show up, pounding on the front door or breaking in? Why isn't the door damaged? Oh you let them in? Just imagine the questions... No neighbor saw them or heard them? Did they say anytthing? What? What did they leave in? Who was driving? What did you do next?

My point is just to try to show how idiotic it is to come up with such a lie and false story. Just a few questions of probably 20 times as many you'd have to navigate.

What were they wearing? Did they touch anything? Were they wearing gloves as you say there will be no prints. Did any of them eat anything or pee in the toilet?? GET REAL.

Did they know you just happened to have your son on this day? Do you think they were after him? Then why an armed robbery? Etc., etc., etc.

STUPD. But responsible for this child's murder. I'd bet on it. They just keep getting dumber and dumber. YET they are murderers of children. And in this case, his OWN. (^(&(#$(%(&#$(#&$@$(&!!!

And I'm flat out seroius, WHERE was his girlfriend in all of this? Was she taken too?? It is completely silent on that part so I can only guess she is helping or they are hoping he will tell her where the boy's body is?

Or has she refused to talk and/or lawyered up and they just don't go there because they don't have anything yet on her or knowledge because she won't talk?

Police find body believed to be missing 2-year-old whose father claimed he was kidnapped

Police believe the week-long search for J’Asiah Mitchell has come to a tragic end.

Authorities confirmed to Channel 2 Action News that they have found a body believed to be J’Asiah. They have not yet confirmed the body to be him.

A child’s remains have been found nearly a week after a toddler’s disappearance, Georgia police told multiple news outlets.

The discovery was made Wednesday, Aug. 23, amid the search for J’Asiah Mitchell, WANF reported, citing the East Point Police Department.

Officers found the body at a garbage facility, but the child hasn’t been confirmed as J’Asiah, authorities told WSB-TV.

Even though I didn't believe from the start in this one this child was likely alive per the ridiculous story, I still have this to say:

#$!%#$!$#!$!!!%%!#$!#$!$!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!@@#'!!!

His own SON. Just another POS scum that shouldn't be allowed to draw air yet they do and they take the breath of innocents permanently. DESPICABLE MONSTER. New words need to be invented I'll tell ya, there are not BAD ENOUGH words for such people and their deeds.

RIP J'asiah.

Good job on the part of LE. Great job. Knew quickly his story did not add up and were looking for him based on that and where HE would have disposed of him.

'It’s emotional for the entire department' | Child's body found in East Point may take two weeks to positively identify

East Point Police Department said Thursday it may take two weeks to positively identify a child’s body found at a waste collection site. The grim discovery comes one week after two-year-old J’Asiah Mitchell was reported missing.

On Wednesday, police said they believe there’s a “high probability” the body is J’Asiah’s.

J’Asiah’s grandmother told 11Alive over the phone Thursday, the family also believes the body is the missing toddler’s. They have asked for privacy. The family previously pleaded with the community for tips.

A week-long desperate search weighed not only on the community but also on police. Authorities drained a pond at the Elite at Lakeview Apartments in East Point last Friday.
“It’s emotional for the entire department because we were all hoping and praying we would find this child alive,” East Point Police Chief Shawn Buchanan said.

The hope diminished Wednesday when investigators found a child’s body at the East Point Transfer Station. Buchanan said data from J’Asiah’s father, Artavious North’s cell phone, led them to the body.

“By using technology, we can find out a person’s location, where they have been, and things of that nature,” Buchanan said. “We basically went through the process of going everywhere he’s been and trying to look for what he could have possibly done with the child. That’s how we discovered the child.”

“We’re still trying to positively identify the child,” Buchanan said. “That is our number one goal and then to find out the actual cause of death, and that’s what next.”

Detectives who worked this case are getting grief counseling as they wait to learn if the discovered body is J’Asiah.

“Most of us are parents, so to see a child that age has an unfortunate incident like this occur. It’s emotional because it reminds us of our families. A lot of people had difficulties working in this case, but one thing we have to do is bring this person to justice. That’s what kept us focused,” Buchanan said.

Buchanan added he’s meeting with the district attorney Friday to make sure everything is in order for possible charges once the body is identified. Police said J’Asiah’s father is their only person of interest.

It's only been a week and he is unidentifiable which I think says a lot. What an evil POS. His own cell phone pointed them to where to search. IDIOT. He is their ONLY person of interest so he is going down. I take that to mean they have no questions regarding the gf so I will quit wondering there unless more is said. And as they say they are meeting with the DA to have all in order for charges once the "body" is identified.

This is so outrageous, they all ARE. Not only do they commit evil, they ten cover up and they then lie and won't even help LE or CARING family locate the body to put them to rest.

It is a SICK TWISTED individual who can do that. Yet there are so many that do...

Another that just throws their child away like garbage, with the garbage and left to the elements as it says.

Good on his being charged, thank GOD, but nothing changes what was done to this child.

I am still waiting to hear on the gf, whether she was home, where she knew, whether she participated, whether she was not present and knew nothing and is completely innocent, etc. I'm not thinking one way or the other, it is just that little has been said and I want to know all responsible are charged. She may well be innocent.

Grand jury indicts father of 2-year-old J'Asiah Mitchell for toddler's murder; Mom speaks out

A Fulton County grand jury has indicted an East Point man accused of murdering his 2-year-old son and lying to police about the boy's disappearance.

Artavious North is facing charges of murder, felony murder, first-degree cruelty to children, concealing the death of another, and abandonment of a dead body in connection with the death of his son, J'Asiah Mitchell.

It’s been almost eight months since Asia Mitchell says she last heard her little boy’s laugh or held him in her arms.

"My baby was the most outgoing two-year-old, the most smartest, the most … I can say independently child that I have known," Asia told FOX 5 Atlanta in an exclusive interview.

In all that time, she said the pain she feels each day thinking about J’Asiah’s last moments hasn’t gone away.

"You took something precious, something innocent, you took a king from this world," she said. "You made a whole lie about how you did it, and the disappearance of him."

North's Fulton County grand jury indictment accuses him of maliciously causing his son cruel physical pain, leading to his death, and trying to cover it up by leaving his body in a dumpster.

Asia Mitchell had a direct message for the father of her son: "I have no sympathy of what time [you're going to] have, what you have to deal with or the predicament that [you're going to] be in," Asia said.

Asia said while the indictment is a step toward justice for her baby boy, she won’t know closure until those charges result in a conviction.

"When I hear guilty, guilty, guilty, that’s when my smile and my relief is going to go," she said.
