Circumstances of Discovery
On August 9, 1976, the bodies of an unidentified white male and white female were discovered on a dirt road 1/2 mile from Interstate 95 and Highway 341 in Northeast Sumter County. The road is known as Locklair Road, a frontage road just off the interstate. Both victims were shot multiple times. The only potential identifiers found at the scene was a ring worn by the male that had the initials “JPF” inscribed. The ring was described as being of a Far Eastern design. Over the years, the fingerprints of both subjects have been periodically resubmitted to the FBI database to see if any new information may have been entered somewhere that may help solve their identities. In 2007, the bodies were exhumed by a team of our forensic investigators, then Coroner Verna Moore, agents from the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) and forensic pathologists from Newberry Pathology to get samples to be submitted into the state, national and international DNA databases.

The two victims in this case have been identified as James Freund of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and Pamela Buckley of Colorado Springs, Colorado. These are their most recent places of residence prior to them being found in Sumter County.

Hmm. Either the man thinking the young man was from Canada and a son of a doctor had the wrong person in mind or Freund had moved away into the US prior if he lived in Lancaster. She being from Colorado puts quite a distance between them. Now that the names are out, I suspect people will find out more.

I unfortunately cannot read the fb watch post. It must not be public.

I can't see it, either.

I'm sure all of it will be on the public web soon enough.

Victim identified in nearly 45-year-old cold case is from Lancaster
The identities of a John and Jane Doe found shot to death in Sumter County nearly 45 years ago was revealed.

The Sumter County Sheriff’s Department said Pamela Buckley, 25 and James Freund, 30 are the John and Jane Doe from a 1976 cold case.

Both victims went missing in 1975.

Pamela was reported missing from Colorado and James was reported missing from Pennsylvania, according to Sheriff Dennis.

Interesting that each were reported missing from their respective states. I wonder if this means family or friends did not know they headed somewhere else (SC) and thinks they each when missing from their homes.

It doesn't sound like they know for sure what the circumstances were that put the two together.

Thanks.

Hmm, it sounds like thus far they can't connect the two. Earlier thoughts they were foreign appear to be wrong and thus far, no one seems to know why they were together. Still a bit of a mystery but they will likely figure it out.

Freund graduated from McCaskey High School in 1964. He played JV sports and joined various clubs, including English Study, Baseball, and Pinochle. The school's yearbook indicated he wanted to pursue a career as an accountant. To his friends, Freund was known as "J.P." According to newspaper records, he lived on West Walnut Street in Lancaster.

Buckley and Freund were found by a truck driver in 1976 along Interstate 95 and Old St. John Church Road in Sumter County. Once the coroner arrived on the scene, she determined that they had been shot. Both had been shot execution style - two in the front and one in the back of the head. Until now, the case had gone cold.
