Coos County Sheriff searching for 5-year-old boy missing since Saturday

The Coos County Sheriff’s Office is looking for a 5-year-old who went missing over the weekend.

Police say Joshua James McCoy has been missing since 5:30 p.m. on Saturday from a home on Stage Road in Hauser. That’s when his mother discovered he wasn’t inside the house after the two of them had taken a nap.

Joshua is described as 3 foot 6 inches tall, thin, with brown hair and eyes.

The sheriff’s office says Joshua is autistic so he may not respond when called to.

Police are thankful for the community members who have offered assistance, but officers say the search and rescue team is not currently “seeking additional manpower due to the nature of the proven process of searches and evidence preservation.”

Body of missing 5-year-old Joshua James McCoy found
The Coos County Sheriff's Office has confirmed that the body of missing 5-year-old Joshua James McCoy has been found.

From the Sheriff's Office:

It is with immense sadness that we have to report that missing Joshua McCoy has been found deceased. Joshua had been missing since the late evening of Saturday, November 9th, 2024. Joshua was reported to North Coos dispatch via third party at 6:27 pm.

At approximately 6:45 PM, first responders arrived on scene. Soon after, it was discovered the child had a cellphone, and a phone-ping of that phone was conducted. The information related to the phone-ping did not provide any fruitful information.

Several Deputies began a search of the property, while investigating the allegations of Joshua being picked up by a known family member which was later found not be factual. An ‘Attempt To Locate’ (ATL) was sent out to all surrounding agencies.

On Sunday, November 10th, deputies continued to search the property and surrounding areas, along with several volunteers from Coos County Search and Rescue including K9 units, ground and Drone operators. A pond on the property was drained and nothing of interest was located.

During Sunday’s search, additional resources were requested from neighboring counties in southern Oregon and northern California. Law enforcement remained on scene until the following crews arrived in the morning to continue the investigation.

At approximately 6:00 AM, on Monday, November 11th, Deputies and SAR volunteers continued the search and rescue operation. Several members of local fire departments arrived to assist in the search. Additional CORSAR assistance was requested for the next day, which consists of search and rescue members from several Counties within Oregon and California.

On Tuesday, November 12th, the search continued with help from our federal partners, local Search and Rescue, along with CORSAR. CORSAR is providing additional Search and Rescue members from California, and from several Counties within Oregon.

Today, around 12:30 PM, Joshua was discovered deceased and found approximately 1.6 miles straight line distance North-West from the child’s residence, and almost 2 miles by road. The investigation is on-going and no additional information will be released at this time.

The areas that have been searched have been very thorough and methodical due to the circumstances behind the disappearance. We have had amazing support from the community in feeding all of these volunteers.

Thank you to the departments and agencies assisting Coos County Sheriff’s Office; Homeland Security, FBI, OSP, NCMEC, Bandon pd, MP pd, Coos Bay PD, Lincoln co. SO, all seven CORSAR counties, Charleston fire, NB fire, coquille fire, Mp fire and ambulance among others.

Oh, no. :(

I’m shocked they found his body so quickly. He must’ve been in some kind of a more open area. Or maybe somebody knew something more than we know. I’m not looking at the rumors right now so I’m just speculating.

Sheriff's office had to put out a statement last night because of all the rumors.

Coos County deputies said the investigation is ongoing, and no one is in custody. The cause of McCoy's death is currently unknown. Coos County deputies asked the community to focus on healing and remembrance.

Poor baby. I haven't seen any rumors and don't do FB but do know that was a long nap to take with a five year old if indeed a nap was taken.

He had a cell phone but one they coudn't use to locate him...? Interesting.

RIP Joshua.

Family of Joshua James McCoy to hold candlelight vigil in his memory

The family of a 5-year-old boy found dead in Hauser plans to hold a candlelight vigil in his memory, as they thank those involved in the search.

After a three-day search, Joshua James McCoy's body was found Tuesday afternoon 1.6 miles away from his home.

The boy's grandmother, Lois Munson, took to social media Wednesday, saying she is "grateful to the police, sheriff, investigators, those who brought food for them, prayed, posted things and just tried to bring the community together.”

“It’s still being heavily investigated," Coos County Sheriff Gabe Fabrizio said. "We have quite a bit of resources out here with a whole bunch of different tasks and we're going forward, trying to close up all loose ends and figure out what happened. No one's in custody, the cause of death hasn’t been determined yet, so it’s very much still under investigation.”

The area where the boy's body was found was outside the typical search area, according to Fabrizio.

“The vast majority of searches, especially for the profile fitting this case, they're found within 300 meters," he said. "That distance was really far outside of the expected search parameter, and we expanded outwards and had some help, but he was found really far out there.”

The vigil is scheduled for Saturday at 6 p.m. at North Bay Elementary School.

I'd like to know what a 6 year old (I think his birthday is Nov 16 or so) was doing with a cell phone.

Did he wander off with his mom's phone?

Did he have a wandering habit so she let him have a fun toy to track him down?

My 6 year old granddaughter has literally no clue how to use a cell phone. She has no reason to know.

I've seen in an article list that it was for playing games etc. Like an old phone, not an actual working phone.

LE seems to be hinting in the post above about him being way outside the norm in cases like this for distance, etc.

I don't have the "advantage" of knowing what is being said on FB so my comments have no knowledge of anything but what's here.

Seems to be hinting something is off along with no cause of death and no comment that way.

As to the phone, first I will say I see so many parents come through the store whose I mean TWO year olds, maybe even younger, are behaving well in the cart because they are on a phone watching a video or playing a game, I have no idea. It's a bit shocking to me but very common. Kids that don't have phones are whining for treats and toys as they pass them, the ones on phones are oblivious to them even being in a store almost sometimes. I've seen a stroller with a kid with a phone...

My grandkids are in their teens (of course I lost one as is known), one about to graduate this coming spring, the other about to drive.

They of course never had phones at that age. But my grandson at about the age of one could if he grabbed the TV remote and messed something up, I literally could hand it back to him and point at the screen being messed up and he could hit a few buttons and fix it. Scary lol. And I never sat them in front of a TV and they had none at home.

It's got nothing to do with this, just saying not sure it's that unusual but I think it's unusual maybe he wandered off and took the phone, and maybe in normal life he used it for games or who knows... And it was old, not connected, etc... Or not.

It's all pretty odd though. A child engaged in games at home one wouldn't think would wander off, they'd be intent on that... And if not online coudln't connect with anyone plub he was five.

Again I don't know a single rumor, not on FB and so my comments are clean of any reading that way just looking at he bit that's here.

Clearly something is off.

And what was the report deemed false that some family member took him... Who did that come from...

When I saw yesterday he was found 1.5 miles away as the crow flies, and 2 miles by road, I was going to comment before seeing anything further that that's a LONG way but figured people would tell me it was not and that kids can go that far, etc. in short order as we've been there in other cases BUT here LE is saying the same that it is outside the norm especially in a case like this one...

I think without fail all of us wondered about the long nap, well long for mom, but taking one to begin with at that hour, etc. and each family does have their ways or norm so I thought who knows BUT you'd think you'd be hyper vigilant, ensure all is locked, some alarm goes off, whatever... There seems to be more here...

And I see someone questioned the time reported too. Didn't know about that. Did she report right away...?

As we know all too often and sadly, most are found in water. And some of those have been faked or intentional, not all, and in some perhaps we will never know.

Getting the impression this wasn't the case here. And have a thought but it's pure speculation since again I don't have access, not necessarily want such, to the rumor mill.

It also makes it a bit more I don't know, challenging? I can read between the lines here pretty well even though there isn't much here...

Cover up for something else that actually happened?

No idea.

All I know is here is another child dead. And I hope if anyone is responsible, severe justice results.

Nearly everybody I know that has little ones gives their old phones to them. Many games can be played without any connection whatsoever. They can also watch videos and play other games with wifi connection. The phones don't connect to the cell towers because they have been deactivated.
Oh. I didn't know that! No judgment, we don't do that, though. That's why it didn't occur to me. Sometimes I let the kids flip through my "grands" gallery.

I'm sure not judging them. You've gotta do what you've gotta do! I can think of so many worse things kids can play with.

I've seen in an article list that it was for playing games etc. Like an old phone, not an actual working phone.
That makes sense. The little girl who was in first grade that used to live next-door before she moved to Alaska had a cell phone and she couldn’t do anything with it but play games.

I look at it as parking a kid in front of a TV, it is a cell phone, games, whatever. And it's something I tried never to do, would rather have them playing, using their imagination, etc. But then also not judging as I didn't have one that was autistic that would perhaps calm or some such but it wasn't my norm.

And I think we can all agree to that just generations will see such differently.

I mean there's a good and bad side of letting a younger child carry a phone, they can be FOUND through it or reached, now I'm talking just people who give their kids this that are not autistic, etc. and I mean a real working phone. BUT in the same breath if you aren't monitoring what they are doing on it or their access to apps it can be a very dangerous thing.

Not sure what the deal is here that he was "said" to have a phone with him, not sure it's been confirmed he did have one when found has it? It has been said more than once that trying to locate him through it did not work.

Clearly there's more here and again those doing FB (and that's not a judgment at all) may have more of a clue than I do. If I still did FB I'd probably be looking at such too.

Father mourns young son found dead in Oregon
"I would give anything in the world to hold him one more time and kiss his forehead and tell him now much I love him."

Lawson McCoy, who likes to go by Amos, shares his heartbreak in a phone interview from his home in Wellston, Ohio.

He says authorities informed him Joshua was missing on Saturday.

Coos County Sheriff's Office says he was last seen with his mother on Saturday around 1:00 p.m. at her home in Hauser before she took a nap.

"The FBI came and took me in and talked to me...I freely gave my phone information and mouth swabs because I'm innocent...I'm a victim."

Amos says when he and Joshua's mom lived together for four and half years in Hauser. He always taught Joshua to stay away from the pond alone and not wander away from their home.

"He was autistic, but he was genius; he was able to read, and he has been able to type words since he was two and half years old."

Authorities got a ping from the cell phone Joshua was carrying, but Amos says they could not find him because it was on airplane mode.

Then, Coos County Sheriff, Gabe Fabrizio confirmed Amos' worst nightmare.

“The cause of the death is still under investigation. But thankfully, we've had an amazing support from both local, state and federal. A lot of people helping. I just wish it was a better outcome," said Coos County Sheriff Gabe Fabrizio.

Amos who is a retired disabled Airforce veteran and father of four older children says officer Justin Gray, a fellow veteran and father told him he wasn't leaving the mountain until he got his son.

"Officer Gray's my hero. He's the man who carried my son from the forest. I love him so much."

Now, as authorities including the FBI work to determine the cause of Joshua's death, Amos thanks the community for all of their hard work and says, "Justice for Joshua. Justice for Joshua. I want justice for my son. I want justice for my son. I just want the truth."

Amos says he and his family hope to bury Joshua in Ohio near them.

He says he has not spoken to Joshua's mom since their son's disappearance.

Meanwhile, the Coos County Sheriff's Office has not released any new information on their investigation.
