Hmm. They are calling it an Amber Alert yet no vehicle or suspect description, etc.

Does stress they think he is in extreme danger.

Virginia Beach child believed to be in 'extreme danger,' AMBER Alert issued

An AMBER Alert was issued just before 6 a.m. Saturday for Juan Sebastian Mejia Acevedo, who police say was last seen in the 200 block of Mica Avenue. Police and a K-9 unit were still in the area Saturday morning collecting evidence and knocking on doors. One resident told 13News Now that police inquired about his doorbell camera footage.

Police say the child was last seen around 9 a.m. Friday. Acevedo is a Hispanic male, about 5'8", weighing around 105 pounds.

Acevedo is believed to have been taken by an unknown person.

"This caught me off guard, hearing stuff like this. It’s crazy hearing that," Shakim Murray told 13News Now Saturday. He lives in the neighborhood where police were investigating. "What if your kid went missing, that’s terrifying to hear. That’s not good to hear at all, for anybody."

In order for an AMBER Alert to be issued, police must have reason to believe a child has been abducted. Local agencies must then provide information to state police, including defining characteristics of the child and if they're believed to be on foot or in a car. No suspect or vehicle information has been provided in this case.

Responding to questions about the timing of the alert, Virginia Beach police said they were dispatched to Mica Avenue at 9 p.m. on Friday. Juan’s parents believed he was at a friend’s house after last seeing him at 9 a.m.

While searching for Juan, officers received additional information that led them to handle the case as an abduction, police said. Detectives started the process of submitting an AMBER Alert request to the Virginia State Police, and that request was sent shortly after 2 a.m. Saturday.

Well they don't give the reason for the Amber Alert but allude to the fact there apparently is a reason to think he was abducted is about all we've got here...

Family of missing 12-year-old has received ransom requests, Virginia Beach police say

The Virginia Beach Police Department continues to investigate the disappearance of a 12-year-old as an abduction.

The family of Juan Sebastian Mejia Acevedo has received ransom requests through social media, prompting police to treat the case as an abduction, according to new information from the Virginia Beach Police Department.

Juan was last seen by his parents in the 200 block of Mica Avenue on Saturday at about 9 a.m. His parents believed him to be at a friend’s house, and they contacted police at about 9 p.m. when he didn’t come home.

While officers were searching, the family took to Facebook Live to implore their friends and family to help find Juan. While on Facebook Live, they started receiving ransom requests through WhatsApp, which led police to treat the case as an abduction. An AMBER Alert was issued early Saturday.

“Yesterday, to assist our efforts, we brought in federal partners to supplement our resources, canvassed the neighborhood and surrounding areas, collected video footage, utilized drones, employed bloodhounds from the Hampton Police Department and Virginia State Police, and spoke multiple times to Juan’s friends and family,” Virginia Beach Police Department said in a Sunday statement.

Search efforts on Sunday will include drones and helicopters if conditions allow, as well as mounted patrol and additional uniformed officers to augment detectives canvassing in neighborhoods.

The local Hispanic Citizens Police Academy Alumni are also helping talk to neighbors and translate if necessary.

An anonymous digital evidence portal has been created for people to submit any photos or videos that may help in the search for Juan.

“While we do not believe this is a recovery mission, out of an abundance of caution, we have deployed our marine patrol unit to search nearby lakes and ponds, leaving no stone unturned,” the statement from police said.

“We are doing everything we can to locate Juan and return him safely to his family,” said VBPD Police Chief Paul Neudigate. “The community’s help is crucial, and we urge anyone who has seen or heard anything to contact us right away.”

So the family are here illegally it would seem. I'm beginning to wonder if he manufactured his own disappearance. That would be a good thing as he'd be alive. I have no way to be certain of that but it is a vibe I am now sensing... Was this child overly sheltered and visiting a friend was a story to get out of the house? Seems they had recently moved and perhaps moved a lot the way it sounds.

The ransom thing is probably a hoax and unrelated OR it could be him and friends. They don't "think" it is a recovery effort so if truthful, they think him alive (LE).

Is he a runaway, that is another possibility...

If they were illegals, they may have kept him close and pretty sheltered, not wanting to be deported. If they had just moved, perhaps he missed friends in another area OR fell into the wrong crowd in the new area.

Just some thoughts. No idea. I'm not getting a sense he was abducted unless they have some proof of some interaction with someone on the internet we don't know of... He is 12 and while he COULD be snatched off the street, it would take some number of men or a man with a gun at minimum I'd say. It's not like picking up a two year old and running with the child.

Again just some thoughts. I hope he is found, and found alive.

What is VBCPS? One would think it would be Virginia Beach CPS but it seems to relate to the schools somehow. I wonder what it stands for.

Virginia Beach Consolidated Public Schools?

Search continues near Virginia Beach apartments connected to Amber Alert case

Community members, local police and rescue crews have gathered Monday at a Virginia Beach apartment complex as the search continues for a missing 12-year-old boy.

The community has been searching tirelessly for Juan Sebastian Mejia Acevedo, who was reported missing by his parents this weekend. An AMBER Alert was issued early Saturday.

Today, crews are actively searching in the 200 block of Mica Avenue, which is the last place Acevedo's parents saw him Friday morning. Concerned community members have also gathered at the location to distribute flyers and search the area.

Just before noon, a police marine team was searching a small lake beside the apartment complex and told 13New Now to not film the police activity.

Police tape is now surrounding the lake in which investigators were searching, and the police perimeter has been extended to cut off the entire adjacent street.
Virginia Beach police officials said they are searching the water out of “an abundance of caution.”

From a response standpoint, drones, helicopters and alumni with the Hispanic Citizens Police Academy are a part of the investigative efforts today, too.

Mica Ave runs perpendicular to I264. That area is nothing but apartment buildings and a trailer park in stark contrast to the other side of 264. Not a judgment, just interesting how neighborhoods form.

Body found in pond during search for missing 12-year-old in Virginia Beach

A search team was out on Monday morning looking for the 12-year-old that has been missing since Friday in Virginia Beach.

10 On Your Side was on the scene as police put up yellow tape around a pond. 10 On Your Side reports there were other ponds that were also searched. However, it was this pond off of Dolton Drive and Alicia Drive that caused the area to be blocked off.

In addition to the yellow tape, a black curtain is up, blocking the view.

WAVY has reached out to Virginia Beach police for additional details, but have yet to hear back.

Oh NO. :( Guessing it is him, not a certainty of course but they seemed to be searching today with an intent and a focused area, as if they knew something, had a tip, learned something, etc. If I recall from this morning, seems they were at a certain apartment complex and lake and seemed to be a reason, not just searching this lake, that lake, etc.

An educated guess was they perhaps found something with camera footage collected. Not that it relates but did we ever hear if Juan had a cell phone with him...

Sad.

It was said I believe by his mother that he never got to his friend's home they did not think so was this a different apartment complex...

Was wondering if it was cold enough there on Thursday night / Friday morning for the pond to have been frozen over. And maybe he tried to walk across it. But it does not appear it would have.

CPS would stand for County Primary School in the UK. Could it be similar?

I think it must be Child Protection services. He seemed a bit underweight at 5'8" and only 105 lbs.

Oh no it looks like he has been found deceased. At least he has been found. They must have had info to point them to that location.
