CPS would stand for County Primary School in the UK. Could it be similar?
Possibly. It definitely relates to the school system just the context it was used in. Personally I think something other than initials with CPS would be better due to there is a CPS and that is Child Protective Services. Maybe county and not Virginia Beach but still, I think I'd change it to not have CPS as initials...

Although there has been crazy weather recently in places that often don't get the weather they have had (Florida had sn*w for instance), Virginia Beach generally is never cold enough for water to freeze or freeze very solid, if at all. My nephew lived there a number of years while stationed by the Navy. I'm not even sure he doesn't still have a place there but last I knew I believe he was in Hawaii but that may not have been a permanent move, the kept his Virginia Beach home through other moves or deployments.

I don't know what happened here but I doubt he was out walking on what he thought was ice. I googled quick and it's too warm right now to freeze at all even at night, I did not look backwards but it is doubtful.

So that means WTH happened here?? I guess he "may" have drowned but only if he couldn't swim and intentionally went deep, for it to be due to his own actions I mean...

It would seem likely it is foul play, not certain, but likely...

They definitely should trace the ransom demands. Only the person responsible for him going in the lake would do that wouldn't they?

You'd think but it could have just been an unrelated hoax too... Typically you'd think you'd keep someone alive that you want to receive a ransom for... I'm sure they are tracking such down...

One would think we'd be used to it but this one just hit me. I mean we hear of another new one missing and bam another child dead. It just never ends. It's depressing.

Police didn't elaborate further on the circumstances surrounding Acevedo's death, but Neudigate said he thinks the ice that formed during the recent cold weather "played a big role."

Well I guess I should have looked back, I never did. It appears a few days back there was cold weather in Virginia Beach. Still... This was a lake wasn't it and he was 12, certainly he had to have some knowledge of thin ice, he wasn't a young child...?

I tried to click into several articles but none would allow me in, perhaps because it is expired weather articles? No idea.

The daytime temps too would have likely of course been warmer than the evenings.

Anyhow, I could not get into any article, maybe someone else can. I saw on the leadin on one article 16 degrees BUT not even sure that was Virginia Beach, they were talking all of Virginia plus that was probably night.

I live where they drive with trucks on lakes. It takes though enough cold weather and a lot of it for the ice to be safe, first for people and then more so for vehicles. Eventually we generally get to where hundreds of vehicles can be on the lake even parked together at the same time.

I doubt such ever happens in Virginia Beach, even for safe walking by one person. Or very rarely.

Was wondering if it was cold enough there on Thursday night / Friday morning for the pond to have been frozen over. And maybe he tried to walk across it. But it does not appear it would have.
By how "liquidy" it looks on those pics, I would say not. I don't see any sign of ice. But if there was, that age is prime for thinking they can walk on it, especially if they are not accustomed to having ice on the water and just don't know.

I guess or would hope anyhow that we will find out more. My leaning is the ranson was a hoax/unrelated to his death, just someone taking advantage of sickly enjoying putting the family through such.

However, I'm not convinced of anything yet, not his cause of death, what happened or if the ransom demand was related, etc.

But the ransom? So it was somebody just asking for a ransom because they knew he was missing?

I feel so bad for his family. He was such a cute kid.
I definitely think LE should pursue it either way. It would still be illegal to do that. He could even have been pushed into or thrown in the lake..

I read that she sent $500 then they asked for more. No link because it was just a comment on a youtube video (the only comment.)

Surely they can be tracked down and charged. With something.
Oh I think they definitely can. It could though be one of those out of country scams, those are hard to get any arrests on. You know like someone behind a computer in India or somewhere. Just a scammer in other words. It's hard to say, it also could be someone connected to what happened to him.

If I were them I'd probably avail myself of the FBI's help with following the electronic trail, it came over computer and app did it not?

Here are some details of temperatures the last 10 days. Nightime it has often fallen below freezing. It was minus 8 degrees on the 23rd and 24th even at 6 a.m. and he went missing at 9 a.m. on the 24th right?

Yeah when I looked back it was cold just a few days before. I also see it was a pond not a lake. I think I read lake somewhere but it apparently was a pond, they would definitely freeze quicker and more easily.

It's a tough one. On one hand most people especially those that live in or come from warm climes don't trust ice, they think it's very odd you can "walk on water if for instance they've never been to a northern climate or where there is snow. ice or extreme cold. On the other hand, maybe not and he knew of such and would be the age to be curious about it or want to try it... 8 below is enough to make some good ice but you need days of it with a big lake for sure and if running water, that's different yet, there can be open spots. And if it is getting warm enough during the days to thaw... The temps I saw during the day were still freezing though but I couldn't click in to see the exact days and temps. It was my computer, I then realized I couldn't click any links anywhere. I had to restart my computer, and then I never got back to it.

It would APPEAR this may have just been a tragic accident but I'm not going to assume that quite yet.
