Ohio Amber Alert issued after twin babies disappear with car from parking lot

Officers first got a call around 9:45 p.m. Monday at the Donatos Pizza at East 1st Avenue and North High Street. A mother had left her 5-month-old twin boys in a running car while she went into the store to pick up a delivery order. When she turned around and looked outside, her car was gone.

Bryant said during the press conference that the suspect, 24-year-old Nalah Tamiko Jackson, was a homeless woman inside the store identified by Donatos workers. Jackson left when the mother walked inside and before officers got to the scene at 9:52 p.m.

The two baby boys, Kason and Kyair Thomas, are Black with brown eyes and hair. Since the Amber Alert was issued, a CPD sergeant confirmed to NBC4 that Kyair was found at the Dayton airport, nearly an hour-and-a-half away from the Donatos where the twins disappeared. Kason was still missing as of Tuesday afternoon.

Mike Etter, Dayton Chief of Public Safety and Security Coordinator, shared more details about how Kyair was found. A traveler walking around 4:15 a.m. in the economy parking lot heard a baby crying and then found him in a car seat wrapped in a quilt. Butler Township medics checked the baby’s condition and held him while his parents arrived. Police were still canvassing the area for the other infant as of Tuesday morning.

Police faced delays in getting an Amber Alert issued for Kyair and Kason, according to Bryant. CPD first notified the Ohio State High Patrol and other agencies about the abduction around 10:30 p.m. It then requested an Amber Alert at 11:45 p.m., and a second time at 12:05 a.m.

The Amber Alert finally went out at 1:37 a.m. The delay stemmed from the stolen black 2010 Honda Accord’s lack of a license plate or vehicle identification number because it was newly purchased, Bryant said.

CPD has since checked at Jackson’s former addresses and three different homeless camps in the area. Court records showed Jackson previously faced charges including theft, receiving stolen property, interference with custody and endangering children.

The boys’ father, Lechez Thomas, spoke to NBC4 Tuesday afternoon about the abduction. He asked the public for help finding his son.

“I just need to know. I need them both,” Thomas said. “Try to speak up if you know anything and make sure the information is legit. Can’t keep doing these wild goose chases. I just want to hold my son, you know? … He’s just a baby, he didn’t do nothing to nobody.”

Amber Alert has been issued by the Columbus Police, one of the twins has been found

One of the five-month-old twins that were abducted in Columbus has been found according to police.

The baby was found safe at Dayton International Airport Tuesday morning. Authorities are looking in the area for the other baby. Nalah Jackson has been named as a person of interest. Columbus police report that Kyair and Kason Thomas were left in their seats in a running car while their mother walked into a pizza restaurant. She turned around and the car was gone. The vehicle is a black 2010 Honda Accord with a missing its front bumper and a torn temporary Ohio registration tag on the back bumper with a white sticker reading "Westside City Toys". If you have any information call police.

UPDATE: One child has been located at Dayton International Airport. Vehicle is suspected to have been in a car accident as there is now heavy left side damage and purple paint transfer on the Honda.

One baby found, one missing in Ohio Amber Alert

Columbus authorities Tuesday afternoon gave an update on the search for a missing infant who was abducted Monday evening.

“Please return Kason Thomass,” city police Chief Elaine Bryant pleaded with the suspect, Nalah Jackson, urging her to leave the child in a public place and notify authorities.

More than 60 officers have been “doing everything they can” since the initial report Monday, she said, including some third-shift officers who “didn’t want to go home” until the children were found.

FOX 8 reached out to Dayton airport police, who say the baby is safe and with his parents at this time.

The Dayton airport police told FOX 8’s sister station, WDTN, that the infant was found in a car seat and wrapped up in a quilt jumper when a passenger was walking in the economy lot heard the baby crying. Police were notified at around 4:30 a.m. The baby was brought to the police department and Butler Township medics were called to check the baby out.

The vehicle connected to the abduction has not been found but it is thought to have heavy left side damage and purple paint transfer from a crash on I-70 near Huber Heights.

Columbus family of missing 5-month-old boy upset about delay in AMBER Alert

The family of twin 5-month-old boys who were abducted from the Short North Monday night said they are upset with how long it took for an AMBER Alert to be issued.

The Columbus Division of Police said Kason and Kyair Thomas, twin brothers, were inside a Honda Accord left running by their mother at a Donatos located at East 1st Avenue and North High Street when the vehicle was stolen. Kyair, was found safe in Dayton early Tuesday morning, but Kason remains missing.

The suspected kidnapper, 24-year-old Nalah Jackson, remains at large.

Police said officers were notified of the missing twins at 9:45 p.m. and were on the scene at Donatos less than 10 minutes later.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol did not send out the AMBER Alert warning to the public until 1:37 a.m.

The grandmother, LaFonda Thomas, said she's upset with how authorities handled the AMBER Alert notification.

"Police refused to put out an AMBER Alert as many times as we asked, we didn't get one until three or four hours after they were missing," Thomas said.

OSHP said the two agencies were communicating to determine which type of alert would be issued (an AMBER Alert or a Missing Endangered Child Alert) and whether the statewide alert met criteria. A decision was made at 12:25 a.m., but notifications were not sent to the public until more than an hour later.

Columbus Deputy Chief Smith Weir said the department would have liked to have the alert out earlier, but officers did the best they could as they were dealing with a "chaotic scene."

"Our investigators considered it a top priority to get the AMBER Alert out and were very adamant that it needed to be the next step of the investigation," Weir said.

Amber Alert up second day in Ohio for abducted 5-month-old

An Ohio Amber Alert remains in effect Wednesday for a 5-month-old abducted late Monday in Columbus.

“Right now, our concern is to get the baby,” Columbus Chief of Police Elaine Bryant said at a news conference Tuesday. “We want to make sure that Kasson is safe. That is our number one priority. Clearly, we are concerned about everything, but we want to make sure that we bring that baby home to their family.”

Missing Ohio baby: New images of 'person of interest' released in search for twin infant taken in car theft

As a desperate search for a baby taken in a car theft went into its third day Wednesday, Ohio police released new surveillance images of "person of interest" at a gas station with the stolen sedan.

Columbus Police Chief Elaine Bryant identified 24-year-old homeless woman Nalah Jackson as a person of interest in the case.

"We're begging you to please return Kason," Bryant said during a news conference Tuesday afternoon, directing her words to Jackson. "Right now our concern is to get the baby. We want to make sure Kason is safe."

Surveillance images released by police captured Jackson at a gas station in the Dayton suburb of Huber Heights early Tuesday morning driving the stolen black 2010 Honda Accord. In a statement posted on Twitter, police said that while at the gas station, Jackson asked an employee for money.

Columbus Deputy Chief Smith Weir said Jackson was captured on the gas station's surveillance cameras shortly before additional security video showed her dropping off Kyair at the Dayton airport around 4:30 a.m.

Weir said it was "troubling aspect" that Jackson would leave one of the babies but keep the other.

"It's perplexing as to why that would be," Weir said. "Obviously we could all let our imaginations run wild, but we have to deal with what the facts are, and the facts are we're still looking for one child."

No charges for stolen auto???

Unfortunately I think she killed that child. The child wasn't with the vehicle. She either directly did it. Maybe a crying baby. Or she dumped the baby to just die. Either way is horrific. I can't think of another reason why the baby wouldn't have been found with the other or by now. Judge dismissed the custody interference charge. She should have been in jail. 2 of her own. Great.

Ohio Amber Alert: Search continues for missing baby, kidnapping charges filed

It's now been more than two days since two 5-month-old twins were abducted from a restaurant parking lot Monday night in Columbus.

Columbus police are pleading for Jackson to return the child to the police.

On Wednesday, they announced they have issued be-on-the-lookout alerts to the five adjoining states with Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Indiana, West Virginia and Kentucky, for Jackson and the stolen vehicle.

"Please return the baby," Bryant said during a news conference. "Bringing him home safe is our number one priority."

Bryant said all police agencies have been called in to help and have been searching former addresses of Jackson as well as homeless camps for any leads.

Deputy Chief Smith Weir said Jackson does have a criminal history of misdemeanor offenses.

When asked if the child was in danger, Weir responded, "We consider this child to be in danger."

"This is a cry for help, we are asking the community to come forward and locate this child," Weir said.

Scammers Posing As Police As Authorities Continue Search For Baby Kason Thomass

The Columbus Police Department says scammers are calling residents asking for money to grow a reward for the return of baby Kason Thomass who was taken during a carjacking earlier this week.

“CPD has received numerous reports over the past 48 hours that people representing themselves as Columbus Police Officers are calling citizens, asking for money to raise a reward to bring Kason Thomass home. If you believe you have been contacted by a scammer posing as a law enforcement officer, please call our non-emergency number at 614-645-4545 or file a report online at www.Columbus.gov/police,” CPD said today in a statement.

I'm sorry. But people are so stupid to leave a running car, Unlocked. Much less with your children in it. And I've noticed this has happened. This is the 3rd time that I can remember in the last year. IIRC. If someone didn't notice the infants when taking the vehicle, When they did, Most people would have dumped the vehicle with the children inside. This woman seems completely cold and heartless. IMO She would have it in her, And did, To kill or dump the child. The poor mom. And knowing that woman is just sitting there, Not giving the information she knows of where her child is. Infuriating! This is a case where I wish LE had the authority to use force when someone is guilty and are withholding information.

I just assume there is always somebody out looking for the exhaust to find a vehicle to take. Here she would have gotten a ticket for having a car running without being attended. If I ever left my kids in the car by themselves (when they were older) it was not running. Otherwise they went in with me or I didn't go in. It's part of having kids.

B***h really?! I can't believe the judge let her walk. Asked an employee for money. Huh?. DUH!!!! Oh sure. Let me get my purse. Trying to keep low is not going somewhere with cameras and asking for money. That's the opposite.
