Ohio Amber Alert issued after twin babies disappear with car from parking lot

Officers first got a call around 9:45 p.m. Monday at the Donatos Pizza at East 1st Avenue and North High Street. A mother had left her 5-month-old twin boys in a running car while she went into the store to pick up a delivery order. When she turned around and looked outside, her car was gone.

Bryant said during the press conference that the suspect, 24-year-old Nalah Tamiko Jackson, was a homeless woman inside the store identified by Donatos workers. Jackson left when the mother walked inside and before officers got to the scene at 9:52 p.m.

The two baby boys, Kason and Kyair Thomas, are Black with brown eyes and hair. Since the Amber Alert was issued, a CPD sergeant confirmed to NBC4 that Kyair was found at the Dayton airport, nearly an hour-and-a-half away from the Donatos where the twins disappeared. Kason was still missing as of Tuesday afternoon.

Mike Etter, Dayton Chief of Public Safety and Security Coordinator, shared more details about how Kyair was found. A traveler walking around 4:15 a.m. in the economy parking lot heard a baby crying and then found him in a car seat wrapped in a quilt. Butler Township medics checked the baby’s condition and held him while his parents arrived. Police were still canvassing the area for the other infant as of Tuesday morning.

Police faced delays in getting an Amber Alert issued for Kyair and Kason, according to Bryant. CPD first notified the Ohio State High Patrol and other agencies about the abduction around 10:30 p.m. It then requested an Amber Alert at 11:45 p.m., and a second time at 12:05 a.m.

The Amber Alert finally went out at 1:37 a.m. The delay stemmed from the stolen black 2010 Honda Accord’s lack of a license plate or vehicle identification number because it was newly purchased, Bryant said.

CPD has since checked at Jackson’s former addresses and three different homeless camps in the area. Court records showed Jackson previously faced charges including theft, receiving stolen property, interference with custody and endangering children.

The boys’ father, Lechez Thomas, spoke to NBC4 Tuesday afternoon about the abduction. He asked the public for help finding his son.

“I just need to know. I need them both,” Thomas said. “Try to speak up if you know anything and make sure the information is legit. Can’t keep doing these wild goose chases. I just want to hold my son, you know? … He’s just a baby, he didn’t do nothing to nobody.”

In search for kidnapped Ohio baby, mass shooting survivor offers $10,000 reward

A survivor of a 2019 mass shooting is offering a $10,000 reward in the search for an Ohio twin baby taken in a car theft and is now considered by police to be a kidnapping victim.

As the search for 5-month-old Kason Thomass entered its fourth day Thursday, Dion Green, who survived a 2019 mass shooting in Dayton, Ohio, that claimed the life of his father, established the reward for the baby's safe return.

"I hope and pray that this baby is found safe and that we can get him back home to his mother," Green said in a Facebook post on Wednesday announcing the reward.

"My main concern is the child," Green told ABC affiliate station WSYS in Columbus. "I just want to get the baby and make sure we get him returned back home safely."

COLUMBUS, Ohio — A woman accused of kidnapping twin 5-month-old boys in the Short North earlier this week has been arrested, but one of the infants is still missing, according to the Columbus Division of Police.

Nalah Jackson, the 24-year-old suspect charged with two counts of kidnapping, was arrested in Indianapolis around 2 p.m. on Thursday.

<snip>
Columbus Deputy Chief Smith Weir said detectives received several calls from people in Indiana late Thursday morning saying they spotted Jackson in Indianapolis. Jackson was found "on the streets" and the 2010 Honda Accord she stole was not with her.

She crossed state lines which is a federal offense. Hoping they stick her to the wall.
You're absolutely right about that. I hope so too. Moronic criminals that do the worst things seem to forget that. But I have seen them prosecute and then later reduce sentences, Reverse the death penalty. "Dru Sjodin" was a case here. The perpetrator crossed state lines into South Dakota, Which has the death penalty. They gave it to him. He deserved it too. He had a record and shouldn't have been free. They later reversed it.

That crossing the state lines in the commission of a felony gets a LOT of criminals here in federal court as our metro spreads across state lines.
Oh yeah. You would. And that shows just how dumb they are. HA HA HA! I got away! I'm in Kansas now. And you can't do anything about it. :bars: I guess you can.

Many are oblivious to it here because you can literally just cross the street and be in the other state, but if you are not familiar with the area or paying attention to where you are going, you would never know you just crossed the state line.

The family of Kason Thomas told WSYX he is still emotional and is trying to come to terms with the events over the past week. They are thankful they've been able to spend the past few days back together.

5-month-old Kason Thomas was fast asleep in a picture provided to WSYX by the family. The baby was receiving treatment at an Indianapolis hospital.

Jackson is working her way through the court system in Indiana before she's eventually brought back to Columbus to face charges.

This case is far from over. The investigation is moving forward into who, if anyone, helped the woman charged in the days she was on the run.

‘I’m just happy my boys are home.’ Parents of formerly missing twins ‘grateful’ at reunion

Wilhelmina Barnett and Lachez Thomas expressed gratitude at the return of their 5-month-old son, Kason Thomas, who was abducted Dec. 19 in Barnett’s car.

But his twin brother, Ky’air, also felt relief at the reunion.

“When we found Kason, Ky’air was able to go to sleep,” 21-year-old Barnett said. “He wasn’t able to go to sleep when his brother was missing.”

The family gathered for a "Welcome Home Celebration" Saturday at Ms. Vikki's Restaurant & Banquet Hall in Berwick. The party was hosted by Karen Carlisle, pastor of Church of Christ Commissioned Compassion. A small crowd praised the return of the twins as a band and DJ took turns playing music, including the apt tune "The Boys Are Back in Town" by Thin Lizzy.

Several tables were decked out with pictures of twins with family and police officers who aided in the search. Mecka Curry, one of the women who helped find Kason in Indianapolis on Dec. 22, traveled to Columbus to attend the event as well.

“I’m just grateful I have my boys back," Barnett said. "And I want to thank everyone for coming out and helping us look for Kason and Ky’air. I really do appreciate it. I’m just happy my boys are home.”

Thomas, 23, said it meant "everything in the world" to have his sons back.

"It’s like you don’t want to let them go.”

The parents said their current priority is making up for lost time and bonding with their children.

Perfect example. I'm glad when criminals are dumb. They make it worse for themselves.

Safe at last. And at peace. Another good thing is this child won't remember any of the incident. I thought they would find the child deceased. I'm so glad I was wrong.
