LINDSEY BAUM: 10-year-old abducted and murdered in McCleary, WA - June 2009 / Remains found 2017

After a decade, knowing didn’t bring relief

Melissa Baum wears a silver necklace holding a small silver pendant with a ruby. Contained within the pendant are half the remains of her daughter, Lindsey.

It’s been 10 years since Lindsey disappeared during a 10-minute walk to her home in McCleary on a hot summer evening June 26, 2009. It’s been a little more than a year since Melissa Baum was told her daughter’s partial remains had been found hundreds of miles away in the middle of the state and she knew for sure her daughter had been murdered.

During the decade that followed her daughter’s disappearance, Melissa has seen her daughter’s friends grow up, graduate from high school, go to college, marry, have children of their own. Melissa has only the memories of the talkative, intelligent, strong-willed girl, frozen in time at the age of 10.

“I’m finally to a point where I’m able to reminisce about her,” said Baum. “I have lots of memories that I’m grateful for.” For example, “She had so much energy. She talked constantly, a mile a minute.”

Closure?

Melissa got a call in early May 2018 from Grays Harbor County Sheriff Rick Scott. He needed to see her, and right away.

“It felt a little odd, he sounded urgent, I didn’t understand,” she said, saying it normally took months to set up a meeting with investigators, and it had been more than eight years without much news to be shared.

The next day Scott and an FBI victim’s advocate showed up at her door.

“I knew there was more to it,” said Melissa, when she saw the raw emotion on Scott’s face. DNA testing from the FBI confirmed a portion of Lindsey’s remains had been found more than six months earlier in Eastern Washington.

“Over the years, when I heard of children’s remains being recovered, I remember feeling twinges of jealousy,” said Melissa. “I felt knowing would bring some relief. It’s been the exact opposite.” Anger, rage and frustration were the result for her.

Days later, at a press conference in McCleary, she spoke to the press and the community about the discovery of her daughter’s remains. She admits it is still difficult for her to visit the town; she moved some time after Lindsey’s disappearance but returned, not to McCleary, but to the area. She continues to grant interviews like this one and make television appearances. As difficult as they are for her, she knows there’s always a chance the right person will see them.

“It’s not over because she’s been found, not even close,” said Baum.

As the evenings are longer, and the sun doesn’t set until 9 PM or later, I am reminded of Lindsey. Sweet little girl. And her killer is still out there living his best life.
Same. I think about her a lot this time of year. It's about 9:15 here and still light enough to see easily. The sun has set, but it's still twilight and won't be dark for probably another 20-30 minutes.
So many people got caught up on the "letting her walk alone at night / in the dark". But #1 - it wasn't dark. And #2 - she wasn't supposed to be alone.
It was a beautiful, Pacific Northwest summer's night and I hope it haunts him every waking moment (and sleeping moments too).

these unsolved or old or cold cases are so hard. there is never news and each year what one sees is a walk, a remembrance, etc. because that's all sadly they can do. and each year there are more of them that in a few years become another that's three years then five, then ten.

every once in a blue moon though after a decade or two or more one gets solved which is such great news. but how it must be for the families in all those years to even try to keep it alive when there is nothing to report and they have no answers, i can't begin to imagine. my heart hurts for them.

Tips sought in unsolved kidnapping, murder of Washington girl

Authorities are seeking tips in the unsolved kidnapping and homicide of a McCleary, Washington girl after she failed to return home from a friend’s house in 2009.

In 2022, a man named Paul Bieker was arrested for the kidnapping and rape of a 17-year-old girl from McCleary. Due to similarities in the case, authorities were looking for a link between him and Baum’s case. According to Rowney, Bieker passed a polygraph test when questioned about Baum.

In April 2023, the case was in the spotlight after a new tip led to a search for evidence in Mason County; however, no evidence was found.

The case remains unsolved and there is a $40,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction in the case.

None of us can totally identify but I sure can partly and I think most of us all can feel it and see what it would do to a person.

The vigilante remark. That is almost like she knows who but they won't charge and the person/s are allowed to walk free.

This post is heartbreaking in that she clearly is not doing okay and how could she be?

I can identify in that murder of a loved one all by itself changes the way you look at the world and everything. It can't help but do so. I get her talk of Christmas lights and what become surface things indicating some "happy" world and "good times". It does though make you appreciate your family more or what is left of them, however, I could not say that so much before having justice and she hasn't had that.

I cannot believe they have not charged or apprehended anyone in this case. It certainly is one that is heartbreaking and frustrating and if we feel that way, I can't even imagine how she feels.

Do they know who did it? Again her vigilante remark leads me to think maybe they do but just don't have what they need yet? Anyone else thinking that?

I can't believe that they haven't released her body to her.

They never found her body. They only found a small skull fragment (which I’m 99% sure was released - her mom wears those ashes in a pendant necklace). Despite a large-scale search of the area the skull fragment was found, nothing else was recovered. That’s what she means by still not having her remains and her still being missing.

To me it doesn't sound like it. But she is determined to find out. Then find THEM!!!! I don't blame her in the least! It's destroyed her! And she feels no one else cares but her.

Gotcha. I forgot about that part. That makes much more sense now. Whew!

I should have read further. That's what I thought. I knew they just found some small part and did a full scale search for more and found nothing or so I thought/think. And not all that long ago was it? A year, two?

Agree. People care. We care. But that isn't the same at all as her having someone who feels it as deeply as she does, lives it every day. Not by a long shot I imagine.

Maybe. The vigilante remark is interesting. Sad but interesting. Maybe she feels she knows who did it or maybe she just wants whoever the perp is to worry. She is angry and it his hitting her hard yet and again and that's very understandable. She has NO answers and NO daughter.

That makes me think cause of death was head trauma. But not finding the rest of her remains. That makes me think that maybe the killer moved her.
Yeah or finding one part after years is a bit curious. Did someone want to give her at least the answer/closrue that she is dead without risking leaving more? Of course I know all could have been scattered by animals over years but they found nothing else at all if I recall. Anyone remember how this one piece was come across...?

I HATE talking about a former vibrant living child like this. In the terms of things like "one piece".

Man I HOPE and PRAY answers and justice result here.

We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude and appreciation to the Grays Harbor Sheriff's Office. Since Sheriff Wallace has taken office this case has taken on a new life. Thank you Sheriff Wallace.

We would like to especially recognize Detective Rogich for his unwavering commitment to bringing Justice For Lindsey and in helping bring closure to the community.

It would be very remiss of us to not recognize Winquist Investigations, Rosemary Earp Winquist PI and her incredible team for YEARS of dedication and support through our mission in finding Justice For Lindsey.

If not for the dedication and hard work of these incredible people mentioned above we would be without hope.

Wednesday June 26th, 2024 marks the fifteenth anniversary of the disappearance of Lindsey Baum. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family during this difficult time.
