Las Vegas police ask for help IDing young boy found dead by hikers, ‘victim of an obvious homicide'

Police asked anyone aware of a missing child from Las Vegas to Southern California to reach out

Las Vegas authorities are asking the public to help identify a young boy who was discovered dead by a group of hikers Friday morning.

The group was hiking the Mountain Springs Trailhead near State Route 160 somewhere between Las Vegas and Pahrump when they found the body at about 7:30 a.m., Las Vegas Police Lt. Ray Spencer told reporters.

Investigators believe the boy is possibly 10 years old and of Hispanic ethnicity. He was described as 4 feet 11 inches tall and weighing 123 pounds. Investigators said he is the "victim of an obvious homicide," possibly within the past 24 hours.

"It's paramount that we're able to identify him so we can begin the key points of this investigation," Spencer said at an afternoon news conference.

He declined to say what kind of injuries the body was found with or how the child died.

Las Vegas detectives have spoken with other law enforcement agencies in the state and Southern California to see if they have any missing persons reports that match the description of the boy, Spencer said.

Multiple detectives are working on the case, he said.

Spencer urged anyone in Las Vegas and the surrounding areas – including Southern California – to reach out to authorities if they have a child, nephew or grandchild that has gone missing.

Police seek tips after child's body found near hiking trail outside of Las Vegas

Police are asking anyone with information to come forward after a hiker found a child's body, believed to be 10 years old, near a trail outside of Las Vegas.

"We need all of your help and the community's support and help in this case," said Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Homicide Lt. Ray Spencer during an update on the investigation Friday evening.

Hours earlier, around 7:30 a.m., a group of hikers was in the area of Mountain Springs trail off State Route 160 -- the main roadway between Las Vegas and Pahrump -- when one of them went off the trail, according to the department.

Police say that person discovered the boy's body near the forest area.

Lt. Spencer described the boy as Hispanic around 4-feet, 11-inches tall and 123 pounds before sharing a photograph drawn by a sketch artist.

"He's actually a lot more fuller in the chin," said Lt. Spencer. "He looks a little older in this photograph."

Anyone with any information is urged to contact the LVMPD Homicide Section at 702-828-3521 or homicide@lvmpd.com. To remain anonymous, contact Crime Stoppers at 702-385-5555, or submit a tip online at crimestoppersofnv.com.

"Someone has to recognize this young man," said Lt. Spencer.

"It could be a neighbor, it could be a friend of the family's. Something that could lead investigators in a direction where we can get him identified in this investigation."

The Las Vegas police department says it has been in communication with other area agencies including those in Henderson, North Las Vegas, Nye County, and San Bernardino, California, and so far there are no missing person reports that match this case.

Investigators stress the information they can share at this time is vague because the investigation is active and ongoing.

Community members share shock as police search for identity of child found dead near Mountain Springs – Las Vegas, Nevada

Some people in the area shared a shock as police worked to identify a boy found dead outside Las Vegas on Friday, watching the scene unfold.

Metropolis told 8 News Now that a child was found near Mountain Springs, away from State Highway 160, around 7:30 am.

According to police, when a woman found a boy near a bush, a group of hikers were walking down a path in the area.

After scrutinizing a database in southern Nevada, Lieutenant Ray Spencer of the Metro Murder said the local missing child did not match his explanation.

The detective believes that as of Friday morning, the boy had died for about 24 hours.

Police said he was clearly a victim of the murder, but did not provide information on his injury or cause of death.

I guess it's fortunate in the respect he was found quickly so the body should be one would hope pretty identifiable as would the cause of death. Within 24 hours and the luck of someone going off trail and actually seeing him is probably not what any perp expected.

I hope they expand notifications and checks. I mean it is likely he is from the area but who knows? This is a holiday weekend and anyone could have been traveling and this was a hiking trail right?

On that note, most schools should still be in session, so checking for children who missed school in the area might not be a bad idea...

Arizona needs to be looked at as well. Furthermore, there is a very large population of undocumented aliens living in the Vegas area. The foster care system in Vegas has a reputation, and not in a good way.
My fear is that he’s undocumented because it will be a lot harder to track down his identity.

Las Vegas police identify 8-year-old boy found dead Friday, issue Amber Alert for brother

Las Vegas Metropolitan Police identified an 8-year-old boy found dead near a trailhead Friday morning and issued an Amber Alert for the boy's brother.

LVMPD Lt. Ray Spencer said a mother saw the sketch of the boy released Friday, and identified the boy as her 8-year-old son. The Clark County Coroner showed the mother photos of the boy, and made a positive identification.

Spencer said the boy was last seen with his biological father. The father then picked up the boy's half-brother.

LVMPD issued an Amber Alert for the boy's half-brother Eden Montes. Spencer said it will be a multi-state Amber Alert to find the boy.

AMBER ALERT: Police seek half-brother of boy found by hiker near Las Vegas, father last seen with them

An Amber Alert is underway for a missing 11-year-old boy whose half-brother was identified by a family member as the boy whose body was found by a hiker near Las Vegas Friday morning.

Police say the boy's mother identified him as her 8-year-old son after seeing a police sketch. He was not immediately identified by investigators during the Saturday morning update.

Anyone with information on the whereabouts of the boy's half-brother, 11-year-old Eden Montes, is urged to contact authorities immediately. Eden is described by police as Hispanic with brown hair and brown eyes, around 5-feet tall and 110 pounds. He was last wearing an unknown-colored t-shirt with "Vans" on it, khaki-colored pants and black tennis shoes with the wording "Champion" on them. He was also wearing a black Raiders hat.

Police say both boys were last seen with their biological father on Thursday night. It was around 12 hours later that the 8-year-old's body was found near the trailhead on State Route 160, the main roadway between Las Vegas and Pahrump.

Police are also actively looking for the father, Las Vegas resident Jose Montes-Herrera. He is described by police as a 37-year-old Hispanic man with black hair and brown eyes, approximately 5-feet 9-inches tall and 225 pounds.

Both Jose Montes-Herrera and his son Eden Montes were last seen in a white GMC pick up with Nevada plates "LVU00X" that was pulling a white toy hauler type RV with a checkerboard pattern on the sides/rear.

All hospitals are asked to check their registries for the missing person and notify the police immediately.

Still no AMBER Alert.

At this point, authorities are actively trying to locate Eden and his father. “They both might possibly be in severe emotional distress and in need of medical assistance,” LVMPD noted in a news release.

Las Vegas police are working to issue a multi-state Amber Alert for the 11-year-old child.

Police are asking residents in the Sacramento and Fresno area, as well as the southern or central Utah area to be on the alert for the truck, and to contact authorities if it is seen.

“We’re getting a variety of tips. He does have connections in Mexico, so any routes that would lead through Arizona or California into Mexico, again please, keep your eye out for the 11-year-old,” LVMPD Lt. Spencer said during the briefing on Saturday.

24-HOUR TIP LINES:
  • (702) 828-3521
  • (702) 828-2907
The department does not believe this to be a parental kidnapping situation as Montes-Herrera is the two boys’ biological father and “it’s not uncommon for him to take both children for weekends,” police noted.

Hopefully there is a phone they can track or something. I also hate to say it but was there a search in the area the younger boy was found?

They are probably in a bit of a catch 22 situation, depending on whether he had anything to do with the one child's death, an Amber Alert may help locate them but it also may alert/panic him.

Spencer hasn’t disclosed how the 8-year-old victim was killed, only noting that he was “clearly the victim of a homicide.

The boys didn’t live together, but regularly spent weekends with their father, Montes-Herrera. They were last seen about 9 p.m. Thursday when drove to pick one of them up, Spencer said.

There were “no alarming details prior to this that would have caused any serious alarm,” he added.

Whoa. Rumors are swirling on Facebook that this was not a correct identification and both Eden and his brother are believed to be safe and alive...

Amber Alert canceled for brother, father after Las Vegas police say they ID'd boy found dead Friday

The Amber Alert issued for 11-year-old Eden Montes and his biological father on Saturday morning has been canceled and marked as "located."

Las Vegas police have not yet released any updates in the investigation.

What?? It even said they showed the mother photos and she confirmed. So they give out info like name, truck, TV on this other man who had nothing to do with anything??
Apparently because this poor child's face was swollen, and she only saw pictures and not the actual body, she "mistakenly" identified him.
So it sounds like yes, this father has been dragged around and presumed a murderer because of a mistaken identification. And now LE is back to square one to identify the child.

I see. I guess I would still wonder if the "wrong" father is a good father why she would jump to such a conclusion. Is there no ability to contact or known plans when he takes her son with an RV? I can see that it's possible there is a huge likeness to the child but one does not see a mother mistake her own child very often.

There may just be some killer out there who had several hours of thinking he was home free when they started searching for another man.

Wow.

Still has not been CONFIRMED (by LE) that the child is not Eden's half brother, BUT...they have confirmed that Eden has been found and is safe.

Supposed to be an update coming in about 30-45 minutes.

It was not immediately clear if the 11-year-old’s half-brother has been found, or if the body found Friday is still believed to be him.

LVMPD Homicide Lieutenant Ray Spencer will provide an update on the investigation at 3:30 p.m.
