Las Vegas police ask for help IDing young boy found dead by hikers, ‘victim of an obvious homicide'

Police asked anyone aware of a missing child from Las Vegas to Southern California to reach out

Las Vegas authorities are asking the public to help identify a young boy who was discovered dead by a group of hikers Friday morning.

The group was hiking the Mountain Springs Trailhead near State Route 160 somewhere between Las Vegas and Pahrump when they found the body at about 7:30 a.m., Las Vegas Police Lt. Ray Spencer told reporters.

Investigators believe the boy is possibly 10 years old and of Hispanic ethnicity. He was described as 4 feet 11 inches tall and weighing 123 pounds. Investigators said he is the "victim of an obvious homicide," possibly within the past 24 hours.

"It's paramount that we're able to identify him so we can begin the key points of this investigation," Spencer said at an afternoon news conference.

He declined to say what kind of injuries the body was found with or how the child died.

Las Vegas detectives have spoken with other law enforcement agencies in the state and Southern California to see if they have any missing persons reports that match the description of the boy, Spencer said.

Multiple detectives are working on the case, he said.

Spencer urged anyone in Las Vegas and the surrounding areas – including Southern California – to reach out to authorities if they have a child, nephew or grandchild that has gone missing.

The thing about this amount of time passing is that someone may be able to identify the deceased child by now but people are thinking he was identified and time is passing by where a perp may be fleeing for instance. Why don't they at least get out there that the 8 year old was with the father if that's the case and the deceased boy is still unidentified?

They are probably coordinating the PC but also trying to decide just how they explain this mixup.

Watching the presser.

The mothers of both boys believed the deceased child to be the brother.
ALL THREE have been located and are alive. Confirmed through a live Facetime video.
Still have NOT identified the child found near the trail. Still working around the clock to identify him.
Working on an updated sketch / digitally enhanced photo through NCMEC - hopefully by tomorrow.

How far back does this put the homicide investigation? - - We're happy both of the boys were found unharmed. But the investigation never stops. We were still taking tips and working on the case. Still very active.

Did father explain why he wasn't in touch? - - They were in an area in central Utah with no cell phone coverage. They went to a location with service and made contact.

Not going to get into any specific leads. Still in the same position as yesterday, looking for any information anyone can provide.

Is it normal protocol to have family ID by picture? - - Would have to talk to the coroner. ID is made through Clark County Coroner's Office.

Why did the mother think it was her child? - - There is a very close resemblance.

Hmm. So both mothers thought this possibly was him. And he was out of state and contact. My guess is it was never realized until the father called in and showed sign of life of both boys? I can't imagine if friends and family like grandparents heard this and the grief it started.

I hope they get an ID on the child found sooner rather than later.

That was informative. Both the 8 year olds Mother & the 11 year olds Mother believed the sketch was the child. Now, LE is back to asking for tips about the unidentified child. NCMEC is working on an updated digital photo that should be available tomorrow.

The mother and aunt were so positive it was him, and the resemblance to her son was so close, that the mother signed affidavits with the coroner's office. Back to square one. I sincerely hope the foster care social workers are knocking on doors of the Hispanic boys in foster care in NV, AZ, and UT.

Wow I’ve never heard of this kind of case before.

The good news is that hopefully it brought enough awareness so that they can identify this child more quickly.

During the morning of Friday May 28, 2021 remains of a young boy were found in a forested area of Mountain Springs Trailhead near State Route 160 in Clark County, #Nevada. He had been deceased less than a day.

The child is a Hispanic male, 8-12 years old. He stood approximately 4’11” tall and weighed 123 pound. He had short black hair. The image featured is a facial reconstruction created by a NCMEC Forensic Artist and depicts what the child may have looked like in life.

Well someone has a child missing and recently it would seem. I wonder if they have any clothing description. That might help since they believe he had only been there about 24 hours when found. IF it is a child who is missed by someone, they would likely know what he was wearing when they last saw him. That, of course, is assuming a caretaker did not do this who would not come forward if that was the case.

Students' last day of school was Wednesday, May 26th. Traditionally, it has been a half-day, with schools dismissing roughly around noon, depending on whether it is a elementary, middle, or high school. The staggered dismissal times are due to bus runs. Usually on the last day about 1/3 to 1/2 of each class is absent. The ones who show up will help teachers take down classroom decorations, stack the chairs, etc. The last day for teachers was Thursday, May 27th.

nearly all of the schools here had last days last week, too so schools might not know of anybody missing on the 27/28th

Our schools are still in session for another week or so. Are you guys quoting from schools in that specific area?

Our schools are never out before Memorial Day.

It seems highly coincidental that school just got out and perhaps significant if this child is from the area. A parent or someone perhaps knew if he went missing a school may likely report it if he is not in school but by waiting until say the last day or near to it, it was unlikely to raise much concern or be reported.

Then again, maybe he was not from the area but school got out elsewhere and it was the opportunity for travel with the child with no questions asked by others or it seeming unusual.

This is the first time in forever that they were out before Memorial Day here BUT since they have the remote thing down, they had no snow days to make up

Yeah, to tell you the truth, I honestly can't say when they are out this year re Covid and all but I know it has never been before Memorial Day even with no make up days. Been a pet peeve of parents for years, and students.

I was hoping this child would be identified quickly, as quickly as he was mistakenly identified.

If this child was from the Vegas area, many students move over summers. When he doesn't show up for August start of school, the assumption will be that his family moved away to a different school/part of town, the child is now attending a private or parochial school, or the family moved out of town.
. A new public school requests school records from the old public school when a new student shows up at new public school. If the child is going to a new private school, the private school does not always request the records. If the records are not requested, they remain in a sort of limbo and are destroyed years later when that particular grade level has graduated high school.

So many people out there are still under the assumption that this boy has been identified, which is what I was afraid of. :(
I shared his new NCMEC photo on my missing persons page and, despite me saying in the post that he has NOT BEEN IDENTIFIED and the earlier identification was false, several people commented that he was identified and his brother was missing, etc.
So disheartening. Most "normal" people don't follow cases as closely as we do here and have since heard he was identified and "moved on".

That's a shame and I worried about this as well. It was a very unfortunate misidentification for many reasons.

LE had better get on doing everything in their power to get this into major news anywhere and everywhere and online as well. I don't do FB but people that do should share the fact he is NOT identified and ask all they know to pass it on along with his picture and for those they pass it to, to do the same, etc. I am not a FB fan but it arguably reaches the most people the fastest...
