MA'KHIA BRYANT (16) Shot by Columbus OH Police Officer

“They were calling each other the B-word, so I figured it was just a girl fight,” Donovan Brinson, who pulled up into his driveway as the fight unfolded Tuesday, told the Columbus Dispatch.

He said the yelling escalated moments later when he took his dog out back, so he went back into his home.

And when police arrived, he said he heard four shots as his wife, Rachel, dove to the floor.

Good article although I don't see their need to show her down on the ground, it shows nothing of what occurred.

Someone says he should have tased and another said the officer should have told her to put the knife down? No. This was a moving attack from all accounts and pictures, etc. and she was in the act, and had a weapon, you don't give the perp a chance to kill another. In fact it looks like she was lunging with the knife. I can't believe anyone out there in this entire world would dare compare this to other incidents where decisions were questionable and more.

If she were alive, the other girl could be likely dead and Makhia would be facing at least assault, attempted murder or even murder charges right now.

It is sad she was young and her family has lost her. Tragic in fact.

Perhaps there is more that would change my opinion but I can't imagine what. It also could cement my opinion further. I wonder if she went in and got the knife or came with it, etc. for instance.

Jmo.

yep, this is one of those that fit in my "split second decision" category. I am really not seeing a good alternative for the fast decision he had to make. Sure he *could* have used his taser but that might not have stopped her and he *could* have not fatally shot her but again, that might not have stopped her from possibly killing her victim in her sight. Good thing there was video on this one.

There's nothing good to say about this situation, in my opinion. She was too young to lose her life, but lunging at people with a knife never has a good outcome. Teens rarely comprehend dire consequences to their risky choices, especially when they're really, really upset about something.

Pretty much how I see it as well. At this point. This was a possible life and death situation and she was the one attacking. To me, that is not a Taser event and it is a split second decision and he saved the one that was going to be attacked with a knife. I really don't see in such a choice that you would choose the offender. Jmo.

And studies, as well as the experience of individual police departments, have shown that Tasers fail to bring down their target as much as 40 percent of the time.

Exactly. They would probably only be my choice to use if the person was unharmed

That's interesting. I did not know that. I have heard of instances where it didn't or more than one try was necessary. This case does not seem to fit questionable choice by an officer whatsoever. From what we saw so far anyhow.

Angela Moore said Thursday that two of her former foster children visited the Columbus, Ohio, home on Tuesday to celebrate her birthday when Ma'Khia and the two young women began fighting.

"It was over keeping the house clean," Moore recalled. "The older one told them to clean up the house because 'Mom doesn't like the house dirty.' So that's how it all started."

Moore said that one of the young women told her that Bryant responded, "You're not the guardian of me."

"They argue all the time, but I never thought it would escalate like that," Moore added.

On Tuesday, before the Columbus Division of Police released bodycam footage of the shooting incident, family members claimed Bryant was just protecting herself when the police responded to a 911 call in which a frantic woman claimed, "These grown girls over here trying to fight us, trying to stab us!” Some family members also suggested responding officers intentionally targeted the teen because she was black.

Hazel Bryant, who says she is the girl’s aunt, told reporters Tuesday the teen was “fending off a physical assault" by the time the police got there.

We know this isn’t true based on the neighbor’s security footage.

“The police are going to lie,” said Hazel Bryant, who wasn’t present herself for the incident but claims she heard about it later from the teen’s grandmother and father. “I’m so thankful that someone from the family was actually on the scene.”

If someone is lying, it sure doesn’t appear to be the police.

✂️

But the claim that she was simply acting in self-defense when law enforcement officials arrived clearly doesn’t appear to be true, based on the latest available footage of the incident.

and this is why I can't understand the cops that refuse to wear a body cam.
