Kansas mother of 3 goes missing on trip to visit family in Alabama

A mother of three from Kansas has now been missing for a week after leaving on a trip to visit family in Alabama.

Marilane Carter, 36, left her home in Overland Park, Kansas, just outside Kansas City, on the night of Saturday, Aug. 1, according to police. She was last seen in surveillance footage checking into a hotel in West Plains, Missouri, the following morning.

Law enforcement said Carter last spoke to family on that Sunday near Memphis, Tennessee, before her phone went dead. Police confirmed her cellphone last pinged in that area.

Her husband, Adam Carter, told Kansas City ABC affiliate that his wife spent about three hours at the Missouri hotel before leaving and was speaking to her when her phone died. She spoke to her mother minutes later and her phone died again.

The Overland Park police said she "made concerning statements to her family and has not been heard from since later Sunday, August 2nd."

Authorities did not specify what was said.

"She was seeking some mental health care and she didn't want to go to any place in Kansas City, but she wanted to go to a place she was familiar with," Adam Carter, who works as a pastor in Kansas, told KMBC on Saturday.

Marilane Carter's mother lives in Birmingham, Alabama, and she was also going to see her newborn niece.

Carter said the family has been searching in the area of the Interstate 55 bridge over the Mississippi River in Memphis where the cellphone last pinged her location. She has not used her phone or credit card since speaking to her husband and mother on Sunday evening.

"We are devastated because she has three children and they cry every night," Marlene Mesler, Marilane's mother, told Birmingham ABC affiliate WBMA. "They are asking for their mommy. Her husband loves her so much."

I guess it is no surprise, I think we all expected it to be her. Still a strange case. Part of me doubts we will find out more but part of me thinks they should still be dotting i's and crossing t's and sharing some answers. It very likely is suicide. However, the top people and coroners always say you never assume that, you investigate it like a homicide or an unknown cause. This is a strange one and I think it deserves that, I think they all do actually. It is entirely different but look at the Rebecca Zahau case, when closed too fast with questions and answers and strange circumstances, or lack of looking into something and questioning people, questions remain, the case haunts, etc. Jmo.

Imo LE often says 'no foul play suspected' surprisingly early in cases.
In this case I think Marilane killed herself, but I do hope that every piece of evidence is examined thoroughly, and not dismissed because of a huge caseload or lacking resources.

You said it better than I. That's exactly about where I am at. I do think it is likely suicide, I just feel it deserves a serious investigation just to be sure. It is unlikely but it could be one brilliant plan by a criminal not as dumb as the normal criminal....

For some reason in this case, I thought of assisted suicides and I thought of some of those few cases where someone pushed someone else to commit suicide... There have been a few teens where that was the case and in one case the man pushing it was a father himself pushing a girl to do it and giving her ideas and encouragement... I believe he was charged. I believe there was a teen charged as well for telling someone to go kill themselves and keeping at it in another case...

In NO WAY am I saying that happened here, I just think the questions and oddities deserve some investigation. Where she was, what she was doing prior for the missing hours, whether there was any suicidal tendencies, diagnosed mental illnesses, etc.

If for no other reason than her children one day may have these thoughts and questions. Jmo.

The Arkansas State Medical Examiners Office in Little Rock ruled her death as a suicide and the cause of death as asphyxiation from carbon monoxide, according to the Crittenden County Sheriff’s office on Friday.
