Circumstances of Disappearance
Some time after 7:00 pm, a Woodsville, New Hampshire, resident heard a loud thump outside of her house. Through her window she could see a car up against the snowbank along Route 112, also known as Wild Ammonoosuc Road. The car pointed west on the eastbound side of the road. She telephoned the Grafton County Sheriff's Department at 7:27 pm to report the accident. At about the same time another neighbor saw the car as well as someone walking around the vehicle. She witnessed a third neighbor pull up alongside the vehicle. That neighbor, a school bus driver returning home, noticed the young woman was not bleeding but cold and shivering. He offered to telephone for help. She asked him not to call the police (one police report says "pleaded") and assured him she'd already called AAA. (AAA has no record of any such call.)

Knowing there was no cell phone reception in the area, the bus driver continued home and phoned the police. His call was received by the Sheriff's Department at 7:43 pm. He was unable to see Maura's car while he made the phone call but did notice several cars pass on the road before the police arrived. At 7:46 pm, a Haverhill police officer arrived at the scene. No one was inside or around the car. The car's windshield was cracked on the driver's side and both airbags had deployed. The car was locked. Inside and outside the car he discovered red stains that looked to be red wine. The officer found a damaged box of Franzia wine on the rear seat.

In addition, he found a AAA card issued to Maura Murray, blank crash report forms, gloves, compact discs, makeup, two sets of MapQuest driving directions (one to Burlington, Vermont, another to Stowe, Vermont), Maura's favorite stuffed animal, and Not Without Peril, a book about mountain climbing in the White Mountains. Missing were Maura's debit card, credit cards, and cell phone, none of which have been located or used since her disappearance.

At 8:00 to 8:30 pm, a contractor returning home from Franconia saw a young person moving quickly on foot eastbound on Route 112 about 4 to 5 miles (6 to 8 km) east of where Maura's vehicle was discovered. He noted that the young person was wearing jeans, a dark coat, and a light-colored hood. He didn't report it to police immediately due to his own confusion of dates, only discovering three months later (when reviewing his work records) that he'd spotted the young person the same night Maura disappeared.

Just before 8:00 pm, EMS and a fire truck arrived to clear the scene. By 8:49 pm, the car had been towed to a local garage. At about 9:30 pm, the responding officer left. A rag believed to have been part of Maura's emergency roadside kit was discovered stuffed into the Saturn's muffler pipe. Authorities would only refer to Maura as missing the next day, almost twenty-four hours after she was last seen.

What's the info surrounding an "off duty check of the situation"?
In Maggie Freeling's documentary which is VERY indepth and includes the family, police, the ADA at the time, witnesses etc it is discussed. I dont know if i have a link for it but let me find the post I put a screenshot of it.... you should watch it!! I'll go find it and bring it downthread.

My main theory has always been that she was upset about the car breaking down and everything else going on in her life and she took off into the night and her body hasn’t been found. But, I do not rule out everyone else’s stories either. It’s a very mysterious case.
It's very mysterious. I think that as well that she wandered off and died in the elements accidently. However, there is one issue with a police officer who never documented his off duty check of the situation but in cruiser # 001. State police and Haverhill police were unaware of this and have that info with the NH AG's office as well as the NH Cold Case Unit. So even if not him I suspect she most likely fell victim to foul play. Her sister Julie feels the same way. That podcast I posted upthread with Kristen Seavey who runs Murder, She Told did a phenomenal episode on Maura. She wouldn't do an episode on Maura until a family member would agree to do it. And Julie jumped on board and I'm glad she did. Julie and her dad are Maura's biggest advocates.... and I feel for them because I was Melissa Tremblay's biggest advocate. Anyone who has time and wants to listen to the podcasts about Maura and/or Melissa should do so!!!
I think the initial part of being upset about the car, and possibly everything, is as likely as anything. One of the strongest possibilities anyhow, OR of being concerned about getting a ticket, in trouble, etc. Even so, it is from there as far as what happened and that's if that was the case. Also it's frustrating because all possibilities are really open.

I knew there was something that nagged at me of those who were at the scene or came to the scene, and one thing at least that was suspicious. After a few days with it, the off duty officer is who I am sure I was thinking of. I kept thinking bus driver or even farmer or a passerby who stopped, but it was the officer. Even that cruiser number now rings bells. How did he become aware of the accident, do you know?

I went into the Murdershetold oneo and I'm not one to sign in through Google, FB, etc. but there is an in-depth article in it too that I am reading that is refreshing me on a lot of the facts that were hazy to me and answers many of the questions I recently wondered about, had the answers, etc.

So her phone, credit cards, ID, etc. were missing and have never been found. I assume they've never seen use of them either since...? I wonder if they've tried anything with the cell records in more recent years... Or even then, and what if anything, the could find. Clearly they had some, knew she had checked her voice mail one last time before leaving...

So she had the accident within her dad's car only 2 day before this one and had not even filled out those insurance papers yet... Her sister says she had only recently started school at Amherst and so had she enrolled mid semester? When then did she leave West Point and did she fail there or quit I wonder... Couldn't reach her bf all day. And where did he live, I mean she had just changed schools... How long had they been together? And where did he go to school? All of these things seem like they could indicate she was having troubles prior and even at the time she left, and as we know she left without telling anyone and her sister says no reason they could figure why she'd go up there on a Monday, etc. Now she did take her textbooks so one would think there was a plan to come back and maybe study while gone. Picks up a lot of booze, one would think with the plan of holing up maybe in a hotel room or some such...

She sent in a homework assignment in the wee hours by email hours before on that day. Is this typical with students? Was it late, how many classes did she have? Sometimes 2nd semester is different if that is when she enrolled and she wouldn't have been a previous student there either.

There is much more in the article but I think a few things at a time in a post are enough by me as there is so much more.

Here there would seem to be plenty to indicate she may well have been upset and/or even feeling like life was out of control, falling apart, or she was not managing well... Calling for info on the area and the condo place seems to add in to going up there to hole up for a day or a few.

She took what was it $240 out, had some small extra from turning some cans or some such in, so probably taking what she could get, and who knows if she had some money on her prior...

She lies to school and said she had a death in the family and so she planned to be gone a few days clearly. All these things seem to indicate a life in turmoil and one that perhaps she isn't managing very well. Maybe not being able to reach the bf upset her even more. Was she already behind at this school? Was the 3+ a.m. sending of one homework assignment a late one, and did she have others and so was taking her textbooks and buying time with a fake death in the family story to get caught up...?

Did they ever find out why the bf never answered that day and where he was? I'd suspect as well not reaching him probably upset her even further...

I wonder how much room was on the credit cards, if any...

That's enough on this part but clearly she packed, took money, called places up there and was planning on being away at least probably a few days if not for good.

More later, it also helps cement it in my mind again, some of the things I had forgotten or that had gotten hazy, to put them down...

It's not at all new to think many things indicate she was struggling and not handling things well but being reminded of some of them, forgot the two car accidents were that close together in time. I knew the one in her dad's car was recent but only two days until wrecking again... What were the details in that one? Was she drinking? Was she ticketed for anything? One vehicle or two vehicle accident?

I don't remember it is probably in Maggie Freeling's documentary though

21 years ago Maura disappeared. I wanted to share a link to Maggie Freeling's full documentary but I can not find it in it's entirety. If anyone finds it i recommend watching it. The link I'm providing is from u local Hometown Tragedies. This one was produced in my home state in New Hampshire, which is where Maura disappeared from. Her case is near and dear to me being local......
