Beaverton Police continue search for missing 32-year-old nurse: 'Highly unusual case'
The search continues for missing Beaverton woman Melissa Jubane, whose disappearance police are calling highly unusual.

Jubane, 32, a Resident Nurse at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center, was reported missing on Wednesday.

When she did not arrive for her shift at Providence that day, her concerned coworkers swiftly got in contact with law enforcement. Police issued a public call for help shortly after.

Official details as released by police have been sparse - but in an on-the-record conversation with KATU, Beaverton Police Officer Henderson called this a "highly unusual case" and said that they are using "all available resources" to try to find her.

Officers began a canvas of Jubane's apartment building Thursday night, and say they spoke to every single neighbor.

Tracking bloodhounds were used as well - but as of Friday morning, nothing had turned up.

Friday morning also saw a public search party gather in Beaverton to search for Jubane.

More than three dozen people, many who didn't even know Melissa, showed up to look for her.

"Melissa was, she was a really, I’m sorry She was a very helpful person. She loved helping people. She had a really big heart. No matter the situation, or what it was, she was always willing to help people. She loved her family, she loved her friends, she loved her dog. I just can’t describe her, she’s such a great friend, she’s always been a great friend," said a tearful Smantha Oregon, an organizer for the search.

Beaverton Police have a new tipline for people to call: 503-526-2280,as well as a digital portal to submit evidence to.

Police info in Beaverton nurse Melissa Jubane’s killing to remain sealed, judge rules

A Washington County judge denied a request from local news organizations to unseal documents spelling out police and prosecutors’ accusations against Bryce Schubert, who has been charged with killing Beaverton nurse Melissa Jubane in September.

Schubert, 27, was arrested the same day Jubane’s body was found. Prosecutors quickly moved to seal the probable cause affidavit, which is the document that spells out the justification for arresting a suspect.

KGW, an NBC affiliate in Portland, filed a request with the court to unseal the document, arguing that keeping it sealed violated the Oregon Constitution’s guarantee of an open trial. The Oregonian/OregonLive joined the motion. The district attorney’s office argued that the case was ongoing and that release of the information to the public could cause substantial harm.

Judge Rebecca Guptil agreed with prosecutors that releasing the document would “absolutely interfere with the investigation.”

Schubert’s trial is scheduled to begin Sept. 9.

Jubane case docs to stay sealed; Trial date in September 2025

Investigative documents in the murder of Providence nurse Melissa Jubane will remain sealed, and her accused killer won’t stand trial until September 9, 2025.

Those were the rulings from the Washington County judge in the case against Bryce Schubert. The 27-year-old is accused of first-degree murder, kidnapping and abuse of a corpse.

Local media outlets requested the judge release the 50-plus page affidavit because it is a public record.

Both the state and the defense argued the records should remain sealed, as well as their clients.

“They both strongly oppose this motion, as well,” Chief Deputy DA Jeffrey Lesowski said. “And we respectfully ask the court to not grant” the motion.

The judge denied that request because it remains an active investigation and she wants the trial to be fair.

The judge also set a September trial date for Schubert, with another court appearance in December for a status hearing.

'Together, we are stronger': Calls to end violence against women erupt in rallies for Beaverton's Melissa Jubane

Months have passed since Beaverton nurse Melissa Jubane was reported missing after failing to show up for her shift at Providence St. Vincent’s Hospital; her body was found two days later, and her 27-year-old neighbor, Bryce Schubert, was arrested on suspicion of her murder.

But even with a suspect in custody awaiting trial, community members continue to pack the courtroom, calling for justice for Jubane — and demanding an end to violence against women.

Schubert appeared remotely for his status check Monday, Dec. 16 at the Washington County Courthouse in Hillsboro. Unlike the accused, supporters of Jubane and those close to Schubert made their presence felt in person.

In a similar fashion to the previous court session, Judge Rebecca Guptill’s courtroom reached its 40-person fire marshal capacity — forcing many to wait silently, in solidarity, in the hallways.

Unlike the Nov. 18 hearing, signs reading “Justice for Melissa Jubane” and “Protect Filipino Women” were absent inside the courthouse; a notice posted on the front window prohibited demonstration signs in the building.

Instead, flowers lush with pink and purple hues were clutched in the hands of those patiently waiting outside as court proceedings went underway at 1:30 p.m.

“We're here to really show solidarity with one another … And so we wanted to bring flowers to continue to show that we are all here together for Melissa, fighting for justice,” said Mak Durias, chair of Gabriela Portland — a chapter of the organization “that defends and upholds the rights of women, wherever Filipino women are.”

According to accounts from friends, Jubane was a plant lover — and the flowers held in the hands of many symbolized the community she found in gardening.

“We really wanted to highlight her spirit as well,” Durias said.

“All of us know a Melissa, right? She was such a beloved member of the community — it's really galvanized a lot of people, and it's shown people that they're not alone in their experiences,” Durias said. “It's really cases like these that can shed light on the bigger systemic issues. We really want to remind folks that while we're out here fighting for Melissa, we have to know that for every Melissa story, there are tenfold more stories that go unreported. And we're really here for those unnamed women as well.”
