MELISSA TREMBLAY: Man arrested in 1988 killing of 11-year-old girl from Salem, New Hampshire

You may remember this case:

Melissa Ann Tremblay disappeared in Lawrence, Massachusetts, at the age of 11 on a Sunday evening in 1988 and was found the next day after being stabbed to death and hit by a train.

More than three decades later, her alleged killer was arrested in Alabama and will be returned to Massachusetts to face justice. Marvin McClendon, Jr., a 74-year-old retired Massachusetts Department of Corrections officer, was taken into custody by the Cullman County Sheriff’s Office and will be arraigned in an Alabama court later this week.

Tremblay went with her mother to LaSalle Social Club in Lawrence on September 11, 1988.

"While her mother and mother’s boyfriend remained inside the club, Melissa played in the adjacent neighborhoods and was last seen by a railroad employee and pizza delivery driver during the late afternoon hours," Blodgett said.

Tremblay's mother and her mother's boyfriend searched the area before reporting her missing to police that evening around 9:00 p.m.

Law enforcement located her body in a railway yard a couple of blocks from the social club the next day and an autopsy determined that she had been stabbed to death.

Also, the initial post on here says she was stabbed to death so i just assumed the cause of death was that.
Your comment causes me to wonder whether injury from the rock was postmortem, I mean, in the first place, it's confusing to me that even though the perp had some sort of a sharp instrument, they also used a "concrete rock".

What strikes me right off the bat is that it''s not only the same town but same area of town!
Although, I haven't been able to find any other info about the case, I think it should have it's own thread.
I didn't look at it but that does sound pretty interesting. I wonder why the apparent certainty there is no connection...

They withheld a ton from the media. So she was in fact stabbed throat slit kicked in the back and beaten with a chunk of concrete.

I'd like Melissa to have her own thread and Cheryl to have her own as well. Andy Puglisi's abduction was not terribly far from this site but not connected. By the way, Andy has still not been found. His best friend helped me with Missy's case and desperately and actively is still seeking answers to his disappearance. His mom is still alive and they would like to resolve it.

He talked of the fact she was beaten didn't he? To me that was even more evidence of guilt.

I wonder if she fought back and so both were necessary, stabbing and the concrete or he felt they were to end her, shut her up, etc. Rage even at her fighting back perhaps....

I don't know but given the circumstances of her death, surely there's DNA to be had and so I wonder what the authorities in Lawrence are doing about it.
You said there's not a lot that can be found about that case, do I recall that right?

So who was the witness who saw her talking to someone in a tan van?

I have made a few notes from various posts to try and get a timeline together.

At some point that afternoon (after 230) she visited the Quintos (Lisa) and was turned away only because the kids were grounded and not allowed to have friends over that afternoon it was walking distance from the tracks.
Lisa remembered the kids making mix-tapes together on cassette. She said that Melissa always wanted to help with her youngest children, who were just 1 and 2 years old. She also recalled that her husband would often walk Melissa back to the bar late at night to return her to her mother.

Bruce, a B&M railyard worker;
RR worker did not know Melissa but saw her earlier in the day playing on the box cars and told her she had to leave because it was dangerous there.... he remembered what she was wearing and when the worker who found her the next day, notified him and he started walking towards the area he saw her clothing and said he didn't need to go any further he knew it was the girl he asked to leave the previous day

Donald Nadeau, the bartender at the LaSalle Social Club.
Donald said that Melissa would often sit at a table in the bar by herself and have a coke and a bag of chips. Sometimes she would be there for 5 or 6 hours at a time.

On day 3, Daniel Hatch, a boy who was 13 years old and unhoused back in 1988, was called to the stand. The night Melissa disappeared, he noticed a man and a girl sitting on the steps outside of the LaSalle Social Club. Daniel was on his way to a friend’s house to get a screwdriver—a tool he used in car thefts. He recognized the man on the stoop as Mike Therrien, someone his family had warned him to avoid. About 10 minutes later, he saw them walking together, away from the club. He saw them join another man—the three of them talking together. The next day, when he heard about the discovery of the body, he asked his brother if he should tell the police what he’d seen. His brother said to stay out of it. It wasn’t until 2013, when Daniel was arrested in Lawrence, that he decided to tell the police what he’d seen 25 years prior.

What doesn’t make sense about Daniel’s testimony is the timing. Her mom last saw Melissa at 2:00PM. They got worried around 4:30PM, when it was still light out. They then spent hours looking around the bar, trying to find her. Numerous people were likely aware of the search including all of the bar staff. He said that he saw a girl, about Melissa’s age, sitting on the steps in front of the bar that night. It wouldn’t have been dark until 7:30PM. If Melissa were sitting on the steps of the bar at 7:30PM, it seems very likely that she would have been noticed and reunited with her mother.

230 last time bartender saw her.
Mom last saw her at 2 pm. Got worried about 4.30 pm and spent hours looking for her. Called LE at 8 pm

Body found around 4 pm next day on the tracks.

Question - who is Mike Therrien?

Mike Therrien was a pos. He's deceased now he was an original suspect as well as his brother randy also pos and a guy Robert Powers all ruled out by DNA

Wait you were talking about Cheryl Noone and DNA? I know nothing about DNA for her case and it would be essex county DA that would be responsible for homicide evidence

I assumed they had different DNA perhaps. I have searched but can find very little about that case.

Regarding this case though, i am wondering about these other two names that have come up and it has led me to this link. I can post the link but it is not available to me at all to read so if you or anyone else want to have a look to see if it is important. This is someone mentioned by the 13 yo homeless kid.

She was killed in Methuen it says, wasn't she? So i guess it would be Methuen LE. I am also assuming there is DNA because it was a rape and murder.

Danny Hatch talked about the Therrien brothers and Robert Powers but all ruled out by DNA
I'll come back when I can participate properly. I tried but just can't today.....
Sorry everyone feel free to direct message if you want and I can do my best to reply

This eyewitness does not strike me as credible at all. He is a 13 year old unhoused thief who himself hangs around there and is up to no good? Did he know any of these others including the defendant?

I recall some article about the bartender making her some popcorn, I don't recall the time, maybe that was at 2:30?
