Parents in custody after 5-year-old Grays Harbor County child goes missing

The parents of a missing 5-year-old girl from Grays Harbor County are in custody and considered persons of interest as the search for their daughter continues.

The Grays Harbor County Sheriff's Office is asking for the public's help in finding Oakley Carlson, an Oakville resident.

Her parents were arrested Monday on charges of obstruction of law enforcement and first-degree manslaughter.

Detectives consider the circumstances surrounding the child's disappearance suspicious.

Detectives and search and rescue workers are searching the home and property where Carlson lives. The investigation is in its initial stages.

Law enforcement became involved when they were asked to check on the welfare of Carlson by a concerned person.

An exact date of when the child was last seen has not been verified.

Parents of Grays Harbor County girl, 5, held after child goes missing, sheriff's office
The Grays Harbor Sheriff's Office on Tuesday asked for the public's help in finding a missing 5-year-old girl who law enforcement authorities suspect may have been the victim of foul play.

The parents of Oakley Carlson, who lives in a rural area just outside of Oakville, Wash., are considered persons of interest in connection with the girl's disappearance and were being held at the Gray Harbor County Jail, according to Undersheriff Brad Johansson.

According to the jail log, Jordan Bowers and Andrew Carlson, the girl's parents, were both being held on suspicion of manslaughter. It was not immediately clear if bond has been set in the case.

Investigators said it was not clear when the little girl was last seen but a concerned neighbor asked law enforcement officers to conduct a welfare check on Monday.

Johansson said the parents were located but they could not find the girl. It was not immediately clear what led investigators to suspect the parents were involved in their daughter's disappearance.

Just a guess but they have a day or two to charge or arraign don't they? Is it 24 or 72 hours I can't recall? That would explain media saying too that it is not immediately clear if there is bond, it probably hasn't gotten there yet... If I read it right the neighbor called for a check only yesterday? My guess is they have something or a reason but it is so early on, they haven't yet completed the paperwork?

Apparently this family had a house fire recently...

There was a Go Fund Me organized for Jordan Bowers (mom's name), listed as for "the Carlsons" (dad's name and Oakley's name).
It was created on November 17, but has since been removed. The only part I could see from the Google search is "Jordan and Andrew's house caught on fire and destroyed the upstairs"

Ohhhhh I hate these ones where LE is talking about charging the parents with manslaughter and the child hasn't been found.
I don't know how there isn't someone in the extended family that can help narrow down the time line of when this adorable little girl was last seen.

“We’ve had discussions with the parents,” Johansson said. “Overall, they were not cooperating. Initially, they were arrested for obstructing an officer, and since that time they’ve been arrested for manslaughter.”

According to neighbors, Bowers and Carlson have been heard fighting on several different occasions, with some arguments leading to neighbors calling 911.

Oakley, who was raised by a foster family from age six months to three years, was eventually given back to her parents. Foster mother Jamie Jo Hiles told the outlet that the decision to send Oakley back was “rushed,” and unsafe.

“We told them [social services] several times this wasn’t a safe decision,” Hiles said. “We begged them – ‘please don’t let her go back, please don’t let her go back.’”

After 2019, despite contacting social services numerous times, Hiles and her family never heard from Oakley again.

“They made a mistake,” said Hiles. “A big mistake. I told them in my last letter it was going to be on their shoulders if something happens to her.”

Where is Oakley Carlson? Search amps up for missing 5-year-old as parents remain uncooperative

Wednesday marks the second of a massive search for 5-year-old Oakley Carlson.

On Dec. 8, the search was centered around her home in Oakville. The Grays Harbor Sheriff’s Office says Oakley’s parents, Jordan Bowers and Andrew Carlson, remain uncooperative about the little girl’s whereabouts and the time frame of when she went missing.

The mystery of it all was made worse with investigators now looking into a fire that happened at the couple’s home in mid-November. A GoFundMe account was set up by a friend of the couple, showing the damage to the home. It explained the parents didn’t call 911 because they couldn’t find their phones.

"It’s unusual that a fire department wasn’t called, I would say," Johansson said.

But Jamie Jo did call the Department of Children Youth and Families (DCYF) right before Thanksgiving to express concerns about Oakley when she saw the GoFundme account. The account is no longer active.

"If no one has seen her, what could have happened to her? Was it the fire? Was it something else," Jamie Jo asked.

The foster parents say they called DCYF not just last month, but in January of 2021 when they became suspicious after getting some news about Oakley.

Other children were removed from Bowers and Carlson's home and are being watched by others.

Carlson is a former Aberdeen Police Officer. He was decommissioned as an officer in 2017 for making false and misleading statements.

Is this even a question?
