PAUL & MAGGIE MURDAUGH: South Carolina vs. Alex Murdaugh for Double Homicide of wife & son *GUILTY*

This case is being kept pretty quiet, no major details released to speak of (other than it does say there were two different guns used), but no info regarding who found them, who called 911, very little else.

Of interest, the grandfather died just a few days after these murders and it sounds as if he was ill from various articles so probably not unexpected. I think of the typical motives, did grandpa have a big estate? How big in the overall family of grandpa's on down? They sound like a pretty well known family and a powerful one in their state, more on that in the article.

Today is the day that Lafitte must report to federal prison. By noon apparently. High noon huh? I have not found out much about it so far except for what jail it is going to be. It is in Florida apparently.

Gee isn't that where Maxwell is too? Not that men and women would be together.

I was watching something last night that took Newman's talk when he dismissed the egg juror and more on that and he specifically said it was not related to the ex husband thing but to two or three others she talked with probably unintentionally, etc. SLED apparently investigated and found this and two are apparently tenants? Once I saw it, it rang a bell even though I get to watch so little of trials, etc. and coverage.

That's another thing about videos by people who do good research and questions and bring the important real testimony etc. into their video. Print doesn't do that.

Anyhow, I thought you said that was a rumor that she had talked with others about the case?

Newman also did reference the Clerk talking to the juror herself and was not happy about it. BUT he made it clear the egg juror was not being dismissed due to the ex. I think the defense has some climbing to do to make her an issue. They can make her an issue as to what she did but there was cause to rid the juror anyhow or so it seems. I'm sorry but I stil think the egg juror could have been a defense "ringer". I'm not sure I'd think that in any other case but in this one well... Poot['s remarks to the dismissal of her I didn't entirely buy either... I think he didn't dare fight it too hard as that would really make people wonder but I found him to be or seem to have a hint of more going on. Just an instinct on listening to him, no real reason other than that.

I thought that about Maxwell too but not sure where she is in Florida. Re the egg juror, I saw something about her delivering a fridge to her tenants but cannot remember where I saw it. I think she denied discussing the case anyway. Maybe it was in her statement in the motion. I will have to look back and check it tomorrow. The clerk issues were not only about the egg juror though.

In her case she wanted Florida and got it which I entirely disagree with doing. Lafitte, who knows... From SC so he is in the south to begin with so maybe it is natural placement of a court for him?

Yes two tenants are part of it and as it sounded possibly a third person she discussed with when she shouldn't have been. I know that's not all of he defense's filings/arguments BUT I am saying if she would have voted not guilty or guilty Judge Newman covered that her removal was warranted ASIDE from the ex husband alleged post, etc.

Yes, the Clerk is an issue no doubt but it still comes down to what the remaining jurors would have voted whether she DID or DID NOT try to influence them. They were independently polled and stood by their individual verdict/vote. They were solid enough to get on the jury, solid enough to reach a verdict, solid enough to stand by it when polled and now they turn? What did that IF it is even true? Money?

He MAY get a new trial, I hope not bu if he does, he does and I trust he will be convicted again. That is IF nothing is going on behind the scenes or wasn't in this one.

I have no ruled out the possibility that Becky Hill helped them intentionally but they all need it to look otherwise. In all her blabbing and all Alex's big mouth in life, I'd really like to know what their history is, and that of her and Poot, Griff, etc. Of kids. Of standings in the community etc.

She may well have wanted to help throw him under the bus but why... Or she may well have wanted the fame and book deal but that one actually doesn't quite ring right for me. OR they all may have needed a not so obvious plan to get Alex out of his newest biggest mess... OR another alternative, they KNEW her, knew what she would go for and set her up.

Most likely she is just an idiot in her own right though. That's assuming these things will be found believable and are backed up which we haven't seen yet IN PERSON AND NOT DISPUTED by the other jurors, etc.

From all I have gahered, it is rare a verdict gets overturned if ai juror has remorse or changes their mind after, etc. when they sat through all, were instructed and at the end indiividualy polled.

With the egg juror which came first the chicken or the egg? Judge Newman covered it had nothing to do with her ex or the Clerk but then would others have been asked if she talked to hem if NOT brought to the court's attention over the alleged post of the ex...?

It is a mess no doubt. And whether Mizzzz Becky really did as alleged who knows so far BUT her talking to Netflix AND deciding to do a book, etc. is hard to ignore and not think she may have had stars in her eyes...

Anyhow, I'd say Judge Newman did as best he could for the record of dismissing the egg juror for OTHER than the ex thing.

I feel lately as if this is ALL ONE BIG show. And if it is, Newman gets the actor of the year award. I mean imagine if it was...

If there is a new trial, will they still bring up the financial issues.

What came first, the chicken or egg? The chicken of course.

Haven't had a chance to reread the juror affidavits but will get round to it and look up that tenant question again. Probably easiest to wait and see if the retrial request goes ahead as it may get answered then anyway.

But then how did the chicken come to be....?

IF there is a new trial, I'd say it's anyone's guess. New judge most likely, new decisions and who knows what may open the door to what and I doubt Alex will testify. Or will he...

However we all came to be, I guess. I was just joking because of the "egg" juror.

If jurors are lying then we have no hope of getting to the truth. Judge had to back the clerk really and that's what the alternate jurors are for anyway.

Fleming is appealing his sentence.

So is Lafitte -

I wonder if these men hate Alex these days. They should. Not that they aren't greedy and corrupt in their own right and knew exactly what they were doing.

I read the one on Fleming and find it ridiculous he thinks his sentence biased and unfair when facing the number of years he was and with the number of crimes he was charged with. On that basis alone, how can he call it unfair? It is too lenient on that basis.

I am suspicious of the fed judge saying he recommended no more than four which seems to be doing what he can to say/hint that Newman should give him no more. Newman does not have to do any such thing.

I've said it before and I will say it again, these men think they are special. They sure dislike Newman, Poot and Alex do as well, and all Newman did was a good job, his job, and treat them as any other CRIMINAL and that's what they are but I don't think they believe it. They are though, just another common criminal.

There is a part of me that wonders, as I have said before, if the federal charges weren't done to help get them all into fed prison. The light sentence on Fleming by the fed judge makes me wonder that even more and his "recommendation" on sentencing.

There is no race in this case but why is it I feel it and think of it. Probably because these men all come across like what the stereotypical rich white southern male, especially one with a family history of wealth, privilege and judgeships and prosecutors, etc. like Alex. They aren't exactly threatening Newman but I'd say they are walking a fine line, both Fleming and Alex and Poot and Griffin. Don't know enough on Lafitte.

Murdaugh, Lafitte and Fleming were powerful men for many years and now they want to blame someone rather than themselves for their downfall. I guess in their minds, they think if they pay back the money to the victims, their sentences should be less. But it doesn't work like that, otherwise they would just do it again, over and over. Who knows, they probably have done smaller versions of this for many years and got away with it.

They are all similar ages 53/54. Murdaugh and Fleming were at college together so have known each other for more than 30 years. Not sure about the history with Lafitte though.

All fighting over the money now. We worked out his assets were $8m didn't we? 40% fees would be $3.2m so not much would be left for the victims.

So far the receivers have billed for 3000 hours work for $641,000 ie $213 per hour.

The receivers were assigned to comb through Murdaugh’s property holdings and bank accounts and decide what can be spent on things such as his defense. Those lawyers, and a third who is about to join them, charge hundreds of thousands of dollars in fees.
“Without the Receivers’ efforts over the last two years, it is very likely there would be nothing left for any of Alex Murdaugh’s victims,” lawyers Peter McCoy and John Lay told The State newspaper in a statement.

Court records haven’t indicated how much Murdaugh’s assets are worth. His lawyers’ filing suggests it is more than $1 million, but it didn’t provide specifics. As part of his plea deal with federal prosecutors, Murdaugh agreed to pay $9 million in restitution.
The receivers said they have performed nearly 3,000 hours of work looking for Murdaugh’s assets and reviewing what he should be allowed to spend money on.
They have been paid more than $641,000, which they said is a discount on the standard hourly rate for this kind of work and well under the “standard contingency rates of 40%, which Alex Murdaugh himself used to charge, before expenses,” McCoy and Lay told the newspaper.
Murdaugh’s lawyers have tangled with the state receivers before. When his murder trial lasted twice as long as expected, Dick Harpootlian and Jim Griffin asked for more money in part to pay for his appeal but were denied.
The lawyers for clients and others awaiting money from Murdaugh’s assets aren’t asking the federal government to take over. Attorney Mark Tinley represents the family of Mallory Beach, a teen killed in a boat crash when Murdaugh’s son Paul was driving the vessel under the influence.
On X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, Tinley called the move from Murdaugh’s lawyers a “scheme to get Dick and Jim paid some more since the state court wouldn’t.”
Griffin and Harpootlian have said several times that they didn’t defend Murdaugh to become rich and that they took substantially less than they would have in other circumstances.
Several people involved in the Murdaugh saga, including the defense lawyers and a state prosecutor, attended a convention of true crime fans in Florida this month to talk about the case to packed ballrooms.
Harpootlian told a group at the CrimeCon convention that over his five-decade career, he has made much more money than he can spend and that he will represent Murdaugh for free through his appeals if he has to.
“What else am I going to do? Play golf?” Harpootlian said.

Tough sh*t. The receivers should be paid and paid better than that to try to track down his assets in his tangled corruption filled web.

I smell corruption and a rat. This bunch is all about wanting everything in the hands of the feds. Who is it they know...? Prison, assets, more.

@Tresir and others. For info on how Alex's lawyers are getting paid, whether they will continue to get paid, if they would represent him if not, etc. go to 32:25 in this video.

I don't do news and didn't even and don't have time to watch this but there has been news on Murdaugh, just giving a heads up if anyone wants to or can update this.

I posted a video by her, that I'm still listening to, in the Delphi thread.
I really like her and she's grown on me. I don't mean that in the way that she needed to grow on me, nothing was ever wrong, I just had my ones I watched and little time as u know and she started popping up but I never had much time to watch a lot, I'd do Grizzly or STS etc. but they started out the same way with me, didn't know of 'em. Then as I watched, decided to keep them, etc. Same is now happening with her. I've watched probably 10 to 15 of hers over the past months. The only thing I worry about and it happens with many is trying to cover too many and all cases, ,etc. Grizzly is being that way, pleasing the viewers and so is this one seeming to try to do that. That isn't a criticism, I just mean they are finding that balance and one has to admit lately there are a lot of old and newer crimes full of news.

I like her. So far so good. Murdaugh is one of hers she is key on. But others too. She does her research and gives us understanding of the law but she isn't dry. But she also isn't sensational lol despite her look and title in the one I just posted, she doesn't go out there lol.

Murder appeal is stayed while the jury tampering claim goes back to court to be looked at.

"COLUMBIA, S.C. -- The South Carolina Court of Appeals has granted Alex Murdaugh's motion to suspend his conviction appeal and sent the case back to circuit court to consider allegations of jury tampering by the Colleton County clerk.

The decision clears the first step in the quest for a new murder trial by the notorious South Carolina fraudster who was convicted in March of murdering his wife and son.

Chief Judge H. Bruce Williams signed the order Tuesday morning.

The case is now remanded to circuit court to consider the jury tampering allegations.

"The recent ruling to stay the appeal and remand the case for a hearing on Alex Murdaugh's motion for a new trial is welcomed news," said Murdaugh's attorneys Dick Harpootlian and Jim Griffin in a joint statement to CNN.

"We intend to proceed expeditiously and will seek a full blown evidentiary hearing addressing the serious allegations pertaining to improper jury communications by the Clerk of Court."

The South Carolina Attorney General's Office told CNN they would "respond through the legal process at the appropriate time."

Murdaugh, 55, appealed days after he was convicted following a six-week trial of shooting and killing his wife, Maggie, and grown son Paul at the family's hunting property.

He is currently serving two consecutive life sentences in a state prison for their murders.

Murdaugh pleaded guilty to nearly two dozen fraud and money laundering charges last month in a federal courtroom in Charleston."
